EpicCodeMonkey posted:Is there a LTT "tech clown" replacement that doesn't have two baked in sponsor slots, a merchandise plug and a subscription request in every video? I already watch Gamers Nexus for the real info, but need someone to fill my "drops expensive things and sets up a RAID system poorly" desires. If you think about it, there's probably a direct connection between the rampant commercialism and being able to casually destroy thousands of dollars of stuff every week. OTOH I've been watching Jayztwocents lately who fits the niche of showing his own fuckups in a humorous way while also not being idiotically clownshoes LTT. He's not my idea of a tech authority, mostly he just bends pipe real good and knows about paint. But he's entertaining enough that I don't fall asleep watching (sometimes a problem with GN). Endymion FRS MK1 posted:Doesn't Gamers Nexus have all that too? Granted his sponsor spots are better (EVGA CLC hair cooling and cat website still make me smile) but he also does merch plugs if he uses the modmat or tool set GN does one sponsor slot, sometimes a post-reel spot for his store, and occasionally plugs the modmats or screwdriver kits whether his or ifixit. The first two are easy to ignore / skip past, and the plugs for tools are usually just filling airtime while he's taking something apart. Which is fine because showing the process is good but he doesn't have anything else to say.

Though I find the 'buy my poo poo!' and a 'now a word from our sponsors' to be irritating, I much prefer them to when sponsor's stuff gets used and it's not clear whether it's being used cause it's the best option or because the presenter was paid to use it. I'd never base any of my purchasing decisions on LTT, simply because I don't trust their impartiality. Shut up Meg fucked around with this message at 10:54 on Sep 29, 2019 |

The sponsor slot at the start of the videos is fine, because on Android Youtube it's two-right-taps to skip forward ~20 seconds over it. I just find the constant subscription begging and underwear plugs (on a tech channel?) super grating. GN is tasteful about his sponsors, and as said above generally isn't too in your face with his merchandise. Besides, at least his mats and knicknacks are tech related, I'd be just as annoyed if he started plugging vitamin supplements or something in every episode.

I really wish he would branch off from phones a bit. He is great at what he does but don't really care about each new phone release.

You're right, if you ain't got Will Smith what's the point of continuing your channel? Though Linus is on track to reach 10 million before MB. Or was a few weeks ago at least.

Linus made decent filler content, but Linus in his underwear for multiple seconds was too far. No one needs that.

What I don't get about it is...why underwear? Branded tech hoodies and water bottles I can at least see people being interested in, but if you're the kind of person in the market for YouTube tech vlogger branded underwear there's a strong chance no one else will ever see it.

The entire LTT channel is one big exercise in product placement. It can be entertaining but don't kid yourself that the videos are anything but full-length ads with more ads in them.

# ? Oct 9, 2019 22:11 |

Yes, of course. We all watch for the expensive parts being dropped, the computers not working after being coated in plastidip, and the software mission critical RAID of software RAIDs - as an actual informative channel it's pretty poor. As a clownshoes outfit, it's OK other than all the sponsor ads and product placement. But again, why underwear?!

60 bucks for a hoodie. 30 bucks for an insulated water bottle. 10 bucks for a lanyard. I would easily bet you can take the 0 off each of those, and that would be the entire cost (design, manufacture, shipping) of each item. Online merchandise is a huge profit, so the more items you can get people to buy, the more money you make.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gg-qVqjUN_w hmm yes Linus. Why are people in chat construing your comments here as softly pro-China? It's almost like western companies shouldn't place Chinese market access above liberty, democracy, human rights. But I guess "We're not talking about China. We're talking about Blizzard!"

Well, I found an extension (not sure if it was mentioned here or on Reddit) that solves my quest for fewer underwear commercials - SponsorBlock: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/sponsorblock/ Smart idea, marking the sponsor slots on videos is crowdsourced from everyone that has the extension. When a sponsor slot is marked by any of the users, that portion of the video is automatically skipped for everyone else that views that video from thereon out. So far it's already had slots marked for me for all the usual suspects like LTT minutes after the videos go live.

Gamers Nexus just released a review of the Vortex "4D environment simulator", which is a weird gimmick device that will make for a good episode of LGR Oddware in 20 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0Q285Cp8nE The device and the video itself is not particularly interesting, however what is interesting is to contrast their video with the Linus Tech Tips video on the same device: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aULhzn37DE You can see how Gamers Nexus did actual measurements and tore the device down to see how it worked on a hardware level, and showed how the software used the video and audio from your computer to (attempt to) generate the appropriate effect with specific examples that highlight the failings of the device whereas Linus just played a few random games and said it sucked. Now, it's pretty obvious the device is terrible but these videos really highlight the contrast between the styles of the two channels where GN does a lot more research and objective measurement and Linus just YOLOs it. (Also I just realized that LTT has nearly 9.4 MILLION subscribers whereas GN has less than 1/10th that at only 680 thousand )

Was Linus really good back in the day? I’m having a hard time figuring out how he managed to garner 9 mil subs on the type of content he peddles. I think he was around 7 or 8 mil when I started watching.

LTT is an tech entertainment channel and shouldn't really be taken for anything more than that. Occasionally they have some sound advice and neat videos but for the most part he knows exactly what he's doing and has shifted away from doing actual reviews and more towards making entertaining and less serious tech stuff. I don't blame him either because it is interesting to see some of these ridiculous projects and such. GNexus is just an underrated analysis channel that holds different values.

It was alright before it became a parody of itself. They hit a purple patch a couple of years back when they did some cool feature-length build videos like the PC in a desk and a couple of way OTT water cooled builds, whereas if you look at their latest one for a Hackintosh, most of the video is Linus tearing apart a Power Mac G5 chassis like an enraged chimp.
