Boss, if they make us find seven lost crystals, I'm quitting.

This isn't cute but it's uplifting as gently caress and I've been obsessed with it since I discovered this yesterday. Basically there's this Dutch show called Beste Zangers where a group of singers get together to basically sing for each other. There's no judging or scores or anything - apparently that was more of a thing in early seasons but it seems they dropped it? - and is more just to talk about their music, their influences, favorite songs and singers, etc. This latest season is going viral because of Floor Jansen. One of the songs she covered was Winner by Tim Akkerman, who was one of the other people in the group (curly haired guy). He wrote the song for his disabled brother. He said at one point he never really cries at anything. Yeah, he was crying by the end of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttfQqnskTO8

Another singer there is the opera and musical singer Henk Poort with like 50 years of experience. He was one of the only people at this season who had heard of Floor and knew about Nightwish. One of his songs was a cover of Sound of Silence, but more specifically, the David Draiman of Disturbed version. This one made me cry.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_BJaM-UrXc

And then, as a finale for the whole season while it was storming and the set was basically about to fall apart, he and Floor did a duet of Nightwish's Phantom of the Opera and blew everyone's loving minds. When Floor asked him to do the song with her, he said that he would but only on the condition that she invite him again when Nightwish next comes to The Netherlands next year (she enthusiastically agreed, of course).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plCScjvDOJM

I loving love this show and I'm binging all the videos I can find. You can see all the fun they're having and the joy they're sharing about music and it's super fun to watch. Other amazing highlights include Henk Poort and Emma Heesters' duet of Vivo Per Lei, Rolf Sanchez performing All By Myself in Spanish, and his performance of Bruce Springsteen's The River. If you want to watch more there's tons of videos on this latest season especially, and this channel has video translations of most of the episodes. The interviews and chatter between the singers adds a LOT to the performances so I highly recommend checking them out.

Cute pictures, and hillarious google-translate potential.

"Oral hygienist Ulla Below will ask all patients who want to see if they want a small dachshund dog in their arms.

As a child I had to use nightclubs and the dentist was too harsh.

I approve of this post in this thread. Floor Jansen is an absolute marvel, and if her singing isn't uplifting then I don't know what the hell is.

The thing about Henk Poort is, as I was informed by a Dutch dude I know, that he's the guy who performed the eponymous role in the original Phantom of the Opera musical when it was first played in the Netherlands. Probably why he loving nails it too in that duet.

For those not familiar, about ten years ago the penguin population of Middle Island was crashing down towards nothing due to fox predation, and local farmers who used Maremma dogs to guard their chickens suggested there was no reason they couldn't train dogs to guard penguins; a bird is a bird, after all. The trial worked out well and they went ahead with training up two dogs full time who spend the breeding season in shifts out on the island, leading to dramatic resurgence in numbers. The project's been extended to also have dogs guarding two gannet colonies and a bandicoot population.

They're training replacements for penguin guarding duty who'll take up the reigns next breeding season: this is one of them:

https://twitter.com/WboolPenguins/status/1165249994837749761

Tula's a bit old to keep climbing up and down the big ridges and cliffs of the island, so she'll be retiring to a farm that supports the project. The dogs feel lost if they don't have something to look after, so she'll be helping watch over the chickens, easy duty for an old lady.

There's a video about the original penguin protector, Oddball.

I haven't found any pictures of them actually up close with the penguins because it sounds like the penguins can get spooked by the dogs. Guardian dogs are really sensitive to stuff like that so I'm sure once they realized their tiny friends needed space they just took up patrols on the outside of the flock.

edit: found one and it is very cute

The penguins spend most of their time in the burrows or hutches when they're on land, too. And yeah, the dogs were trained to keep their distance, there's a little boardwalk on the island and they spend most of their time sitting up on that.

I found some kittens in my yard and I'm extremely sad there's no way I can keep them. Look at this fat belly!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taTf8Lno_CY

My local APL is closed to cats so I'm getting them patched up myself and then I'll either ask shelters further away if they can take them or I'll rehome them myself. There were a bunch of coyotes lurking around last night and I'm so glad this little dude and his larger friend were safe in my bathroom instead of still hiding in the bushes.

My stray kittens found in a bush are finally doing better. The smaller one was only about 7 weeks old and was, according to my vet, "a hot mess". I paid for his testing and antibiotics and everything and as I was checking out the receptionist caved and said she'd take him. Major had to go in a week later for followup blood work so I got an update that he had settled in well, the whole family loved him, and one of her older cats adopted him as her own :3:

Big orange is still here recovering from his URI and learning that people are good. He's about 3.5 months old so he must have just found the little kitten and let him tag along, they weren't siblings. Some patience and some chicken gogurt and you'd never know he had never been handled 2 weeks ago. My allergies are getting worse the longer he's here so I'm going to have to find a home for him but I'm going to get him all patched up and tamed and neutered first. He's a sweet little purr monster who loves Bob Ross videos and gentle tum rubs so someone has to want him.

I've also found that it's impossible to get non-blurry kitten pictures.
