They should just take the cast and do an animated S3 at adult swim to make the long wait between venture brothers seasons bearable.

We need to make this happen now.

I’m surprised it hasn’t happened yet, given how much history Edlund has with Muculloch and Hammer. He’s written Venture Brothers episodes and I think those two have written for various Tick stuff.

Fox could still have some weird lock on an animated adaptation?

I'd even take a comic book. I just want to know the rest of the five year story.

What really sets Tick apart from other comedy is that it's very heart-forward, loving, positive comedy. It never demeans or mocks, it always uplifts. That's *really* hard to do.

Ben Edlund is one of the best writers on television and the reason Supernatural got fifteen seasons. I still think that the "little wooden boy and the belly of love" is one of the top ten half hour television comedies ever written, right up there with the Tiny Town episode of Arrested Development but a decade prior.

A weaker written show would’ve had Dot make fun of Overkill’s dance party. It sucks that the shows not picking up for s2, but as far as last notes go, this was a nice one.

So I just randomly started watching this show after not knowing it existed and seeing it on Amazon. It's surprisingly good so I checked if there was an SA thread, only to find that apparently it stays really good and then gets cancelled. That sucks.

At least the two seasons we got were fantastic.

I think someone either here or elsewhere summed the reason that the show as doomed best: The Tick was "Fix It In Post: The Series!"

It was just too expensive. And that's why we can't have nice things. It certainly didn't help that they didn't advertise Season 2 very well at all, especially in comparison to the hype for Season 1.

Streaming services seem to decide early what shows they're going to push and what shows they have around so they can have a full "schedule" of sorts. Networks are sorta the same way, but their ratings were all estimates- Amazon and Netflix and such can all know exactly how many people stream a show so they're a lot more ruthless.

So I ended up watching this entire show this weekend. It was really great.

One thing that stood out to me is that a lesser show would have had Walter be bad, or have the elastic guy be trying to trick them into revealing the location of the lobster babies or something. It actually felt like the show was playing with expectations about this sort of thing.

edit: I think Overkill was probably responsible for like 50% of the times I laughed outloud.

Absolutely agree with this. Watching this show made me realize that a lot of other shows have this comparatively "cynical" feel to them.

Go, man, go!
My mind went to some crazy places seeing Griffin Newman's name pop up in the opening credits to CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths event.

Too bad he was just playing a bar trivia host... I guess there's still two episodes left.

Does not give a damn

Just watched the first episode of The Boys and it feels just like a slightly less funny version of The Tick (and Venture Bros).

edit: is there a thread for The Boys and Karl Urban's ridiculous awesome accent.

Edit2: found it.

I’m not seeing it outside of the superheroes. The Tick had a lot of real positivity and optimism to it. The Boys is the polar opposite of it tonally.

Yeah, it has none of The Tick's optimism.

the boys also doesnt have any supervillains or superhero culture, since all the people with superpowers are basically owned by the same corporation

It’s also less out there with the supers. The tick has some Venture Brothers type dudes running around, The Boys supers are basically one-to-one replicas of existing superheroes. Really VB is the only thing I can think of that does what The Tick does, and it was obviously influenced pretty heavily by older Tick stuff (and this Tick was obviously influenced by VB). It’s not surprising, Edlund has written for VB and Jackson Publick wrote for the Tick comic and did an episode of this show, too.
