The Aukey low-profile I use is cheap and works decently well but I have no idea what's available in Australia.

This thing is on Amazon Deal of the Day, but I've never heard of the manufacturer. Is this still something decent for someone's babby's first dashcam?

The A119 is the go-to for me, and it looks like dashcamtalk thinks it's pretty okay too. Should run around $100.

I would frankly get the one without GPS unless you have a specific need for it. It saves you a few dollars and also stops you from incriminating yourself by having it show you doing 47 in a 45.

I've been running this one for around 8 months now, no complaints. Footage looks good and otherwise just sits there doing its thing. I like that its relatively discrete without a big screen hanging down. I think I paid $50 and I've seen it on sale a bunch for a little less so keep an eye out for that https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072FGL63X/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have had one of these in my car for a couple years and I am happy with it. The app kinda sucks, but it does the job well enough. Just picked up this aukey one for my wife's car since she wanted one with a screen. Haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but it seems well made and have heard good things about most aukey dashcam.

It really doesnt, except casually. There is software that tells exactly how fast the host car is going by analyzing the dash cam footage. It's pretty neat. The police here use it, I can only assume an insurance company would as well.

Dallas dashcam videos: it's always 635.

Anytime I mention I lived in Dallas to someone here (Austin) who's been to Dallas, they grimace and say "gently caress Dallas traffic/drivers/highways/etc". My answer is always a big smile and "I see you discovered 635!".

Apparently even roads adjacent to 635 are affected. All of that was so the dumb bastard could go around one light (Preston), only to turn at the next.

I go through a dual turn lane on the way to work. Two lanes turns into four. I always turn into the 2nd or 3rd lane (respectively) and it's usually a crapshoot whether or not someone tries to ram my car.

So yesterday after a guy tried to merge into me, then rode my rear end, then brake-checked me multiple times (the last time he was trying to cause an accident, I nearly wrecked but I held it and got off at the exit nearby to get away from the guy) I'd like a cheap dash-cam.

I have a couple of cars that I drive depending on the weather and want something easily transferable. Something like this that just straps to my mirror would be nice, though something smaller that doesn't block the mirror (one of them is a newer car and I don't need the backup camera stuff, though I would like a rear facing camera).

If I may suggest:

Get 2 cameras. You'll soon get tired of swapping them over all the time and invariably, you'll have an incident when the camera is in the other car. Plenty of cheap and cheerful ones to choose from.

Many of the cameras can be tucked away behind the mirror out of your eyeline - the passenger sees them, but the mirror blocks them when you look. The trick is to find one that uses standard tripod screws in the mounting and you can replace them with a low-pro mount from ebay that uses 3M tape instead of a sucker.

It's Winter in the northern hemisphere so you're probably okay for another 6 months, but heat isn't a friend of dashcam batteries. You may want to look at a hardwired connection with a capacitor instead of a lithium-ion battery.

And seconding getting 2. You'll probably never need the dashcam, but if you ever do it will almost certainly be in your other car.

Got this one a few weeks ago.

My rear end in a top hat puckers every time I drive through this intersection. 5 years ago someone did just this to me. Except it was a fresh green. They waited a little longer; my car was almost completely into the intersection. They turned left right in front of me and I slammed into the side of their car going 45mph. Ended up with a double compound fracture and I had to be airlifted to UC Hospital in Cincinnati, OH. Spent a week in IC at the hospital and then another month in a rehab facility. Nearly lost my leg just below the knee due to infection.

This intersection is right in front of a hospital.. But my injury was nothing a local hospital could handle obviously.

2 bones sticking out where my foot was supposed to be was a bit... concerning, to say the least. It almost didn't seem real at first. Until the pain hit about 10 minutes later.

JuffoWup

There is a double right here in Hebron, KY. I've had a near side collision in the middle of the intersection because the left most lane is straight and left. The center and right lane are right turn only. Someone decided they didn't want to turn right and just blithly went straight when there were multiple markings stating it is right turn only. The lights don't help the situation though. Why the left most right turn only lane get a split green light for protected right and normal green is beyond me. You can't turn right from it at any point other than a protected right signal.

So this is the one I settled on because it's got two cameras and wifi and is still reasonably priced. I might buy a second in the future but right now I want something easily transferable. I switch between two cars but I actually have six and I'm not buying six of these things.

I got the second camera hoping it can see out my back window. I don't want to wire in a second camera but I want that view - last year I got rear ended and the guy ran off. We don't have front plates here so I don't need that level of detail, I just want to show what happens behind me.

I might use it for the interior sensor feature, not sure yet.

I also ordered a 64 gig card, looks like it should be good for eight hours before it overwrites, which is more than fine for me.

The wifi feature looks neat... download the video directly to my phone without taking the card out sounds pretty nice.

That second camera films the interior of the vehicle, not behind the car. Great for a taxi, useless for normal people.

also, they straight up tell you the daytime video is going to have a purple tint? What the hell is that? I've never seen the dash cam do that.

This is the true dual camera I've used, but seem to be unavailable now. I'm sure you can find another https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D9F1QP8/?coliid=I2VUHDN0PMK06U&colid=QN6ZDL5RPQ22&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

Put your phone on the rear view mirror and turn on the selfie camera. Not tell me how well it can see 10 ft behind your car. The focal point of wide angle camera is only a few feet. It's blind past that point.
