I've never been to Vancouver but I could see Canada not being as afflicted with kar kulture kommandos canada is, if anything, even more of a car culture than the usa because everything is so far apart. driving three hours from one city to the next with nothing in between but trees and rocks and water is normal. nearly everyone i knew in high school got their license within a month of turning 16. the usa has a lot more big pickups and suvs, though, and canada doesn't have the same level of road rage and entitlement for sure. sf is as walkable as nyc, but the bay area as a whole is not.

Philadelphia’s streets are also so amazingly narrow that you can cross them in nine steps and cyclists like to ride them. That’s incredible to me.

Coming back twenty years later I see a lot of what I like about Pittsburgh, except more of it. The streets are narrow and speeding is prevented by inconvenient line markings. Everything is super walkable so far from what I’ve seen. It’s even more compact than Pittsburgh downtown, and there’s more of that compactness. I loved walking around Philly for the same reasons. You can get pretty much anywhere on foot quickly

I hear Philly is getting v expensive too, as are all low key cities with reits and banks gobbling up assets bc its a way to bank and extract funny money into real money I really Iiked Boston as well but that place is super expensive unless you live in the burbs. philly seems like Boston if it wasn’t turned into an expensive Disneyland city for the rich I think you’d really like a lot of Europe as well I you can blow enough pto to make a 3 week trip out of it, ain’t getting any younger

sometimes I wonder if I should have stayed in Toronto and tried harder to get a job during the recession but I’m glad I went back East so I could spend time with my dad before he died of cancer, which probably would have happened when and as it did either way it’s good to remember that the road traveled has some benefits too
