Honestly, I wouldn't have wanted anything more than a thorough dunking of Rust. That battle couldn't have gone more how I would have wanted, and I think even Murphy knows that, which is why he didn't seem to disappointed in the womp he received.

I look forward to that entering the common lexicon, the same way "fucks" recently(ish) did. Just randomly hearing "Man, (insert person here) shits" when disparaging them, or knocking their perceived elitism.

I think it was mainly a 'my character would do this, I accept that this will probably kill me if it goes as it seems but my character would do this' thing, I don't think there is a way pure mechanically that would end well

On the Short Rest
Murph: There's a card in the Deck of Many Things that can delevel your character.
Emily: Holy poo poo! I'm never touching a Deck of Many things again. Okay, that's probably a lie, but holy poo poo!

Next Episode
Murph: You guys are in a casino in Hell, and there's a dealer with a Deck of Many Things

On the Short Rest
Emily: Thank god we didn't go for the Deck of Many Things. Let's just roll to see what we'd have gotten.
*everyone rolls to draw cards*
Murph: Emily, you would have gotten to cast "Wish" twice, Jake, you would be granted the ability to undo any event of your choosing and Caldwell, you would get 50,000 xp and probably jump a level.
Emily: WHAT THE gently caress!

Also, the genuine distress in Emily's voice when she was trying to decide whether to take a drink of the potion that could flip your Natural 1s/20s or not was great.

I gotta hand it to Murph; he did a pretty great job designing his levels of Hell. I was wondering initially how he'd make his version of lust stand out from gluttony and/or greed, given that he'd designed lust to be about passions in general and obsession rather than sexuality specifically and making gluttony a giant snake that's trying to devour you with nothing outside but a storm and a need to give in and go with it to get out of hell was definitely different.

On the other hand, the entire cast deserve a thorn for the several minutes they spent in the latest short rest directly addressing the viewer and making an awkward, extended joke about being big men on the internet who'll own you if you criticize them; the start of which was played too straight to be comic despite their intentions, and which just rolled on and on and on.

Is Amir kind of dull or are you being fasectious? I've never listened to much of Jake's show with him, since I found the first few minutes of the one episode I tried boring and just never tried more.

Spoilers for latest episode What does "+3" hammer mean? I also hope the new hammer makes the dwarven daddies stronger, they seem pretty weak right now. Further also, did Bev get anything this ep? Hardwon got the hammer, Moonshine got the upgrade to her spores, Bev got...to kill his dad? My memory is bad even though I just listened yesterday, so there could very well be something I'm forgetting

Final also, it took me forever to realize they were talking about Balnor at the end. I just remember thinking like "there aren't any dads even left...?"

+'s are general bonus. A +1 means that you get a +1 to hit, or roughly a 5% bonus. A +3 means that you get a +3 to hit. It's super rare to get one, and a bonus that high is where the math behind d&d's paper thin balance starts to break down. The Dwarven daddies are based on a very overpowered spell, I just think that hardwon's stats and Murph's encounters don't let them shine. Caldwell got an upgrade to his book, which Murph described it on the short rest, and will probably explain at the top of the next session.

also of note, the hammer went from allowing that ability once per long rest to once per short rest, which is a huge upgrade in that he can do it two or three times on any given day now

and he got the absorb elements ability 1/day, and the +1 bonus. all in all a very good upgrade for hardwon

(and now that they're at levels where resistances and immunities are common, the spores upgrade with two new damage types is very good)

The best part of this week's episode, which was fantastic in it's own right, was the team talking about how they're going to be doing a stream of Tomb of Horrors or Tomb of Annihilation at some point. I cannot wait to see that poo poo. The end of the main episode revealing someone had sent them Naruto episodes and they intended on showing them to Jake and Caldwell is exciting too. I'm presuming that'll be a mixed bag at some point.

I’d be curious to see tomb of horrors; I only know it by reputation, and the one TAZ live show where they played it as a goof. Since Emily and Caldwell are so good at d&d (not to knock Jake, but the other two really are very experienced), I’d be curious to see what that dungeon is like with a team that’s actually trying.

Tomb of Horrors was written for tournament play, specifically to murder players who were good at that style of D&D. If Murph runs it by the book, it's not going to go well.

I hope the adventure ends with them beating the fake end boss and escaping the illusory cave-in

It's gotta be hard to be a DM, especially for a format like this where you're doing it for an audience; you don't want to make the fights facerolls, but if you overcompensate too much, you murder the entire party and then, I guess, that's just the end of the story?

That said, I have never DM'd or been in a party that TPK'd, so maybe it's all not as bad as I imagine.

I had an old school DM one time played some custom campaigns when 5e first came out. He was in his late 40s and had been DMing since like one of the earliest versions of dnd. Guy was RUTHLESS, TPKed us like our second session in made us all re-roll new characters, lots of character death

In the end though it was a lot of fun he had been doing it so long he knew how to make it engaging and set up encounters to be challenging but winnable if we worked together

Outside that DM never had a total party kill ever and I get why it’s a pain in the rear end for everyone
