I finally watched Bubba Hotep today and loved it. Really more of a horror comedy and buddy movie than anything but I'd watch a lengthy series or read a long series of comic books about the adventures of Elvis and JFK solving supernatural mysteries and fighting ghosts and mummies.

I had heard there were supposed to be follow-ups called “Bubba Sasquatch” and “Bubba Nosferatu,” but I don’t know how far those made it past the concept stage. Most likely it was just Bruce Campbell freestyling during an interview.

I think Bubba Nosferatu ended up getting done in comic book form.

It appears so - I did not know that! Also it seems just before they gave up on a movie Ron Perlman was going to take over as Elvis. That would have been something.

I seen it, it's alright. The director did a really cool horror flick a few years ago Under the Shadow but I just didn't feel this one.
Some cool horror imagery aside, for a movie trying to make a personal horror its characters are kinda shoddy. It wouldn't be out of place on some slasher flick not when the whole deal is about trying to get into Arnie Hammer's characters insecurities and toxicity.

I'm intrigued if anyone knows much about a movie named Doreijyu / Doreijuu / 奴隷獣 / Slave Beast. Looks like it was made in 2000, is Japanese, has a bonkers cover of a topless lady with metal spider legs, was only released on VHS and just doesn't seem to have virtually anything online about it.

Censored Cover - http://www.gagays.xyz/site/pic?pic=http%3A%2F%2Fpic.gagays.xyz%2F3f%2F6d3fd93760b08c18e91a0959ff190e.jpg Still :nws: to be honest
Uncensored Cover / Listing to buy it seems? - https://www.buyuru.com/item_836228_1.html :nws:

The only real info I found was on a blog entry of Potentially interesting Japanese Special Effects Movies That Have Never Been Translated into English is as follows:

quote:

Described by the box as featuring “nonstop monster horror”, Doreijuu gets mentioned frequently when folks make lists of obscure Japanese giant monster flicks, yet I have yet to hear an actual firsthand account from someone who’s seen it. It was only released on VHS and isn’t even on amazon.jp, but I’ve gotta say, a 10 meter spider-lady makes quite the sight.  The director, Shuichi Kunigome, had previously worked special effects on a lot of cool stuff (Lady Battle Cop, Cyclops, Jiban, Hakaider, Kamen Riders Black, ZO, and J), but I’ve gotta admit that I haven’t heard of any of the other stuff he’s directed himself (the title Ninja Vixens doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence).

But even that is barebones.

I'm sure it's shite, I'm sure if there was info on it I'd just think "ha, crazy" and move on, but the mere fact it seems to have disappeared without trace has me curious. Virtually everything I've found online is just repeated cloned sites, it's not on iMDB or TMDB, and Googling the names of everyone involved didn't really bring up much either. It's one of those films you'd think would be infamous based on its batshit cover, but appears not.

looks like it's available as a digital rental on dmm, though I'm assuming you'd need to use a vpn.

The recent UHD is pretty standard and easy to find in your local Best Buy/Walmart type store. And it comes with a regular blu ray, if you're not upgraded to 4k just yet.

Ah nice, I saw the first frame of that Instagram video in my search but didn't realise it was connected to a clip. drat, it does nothing to quench my desire to get ahold of it now!

Yeah that DMM site seems similar to a lot of the ones I came across, although it has a different description to the identikit one I've seen (maybe it's incorrect? it doesn't mention 10 METER SPIDER WOMAN afterall). I might have to go the VPN route and try finding a way to capture it if it actually has the film on it. I've checked places like RareLust, My Duck Is Dead, Kara* etc and just nothing comes up so I'm not sure if a print has ever been traded before.

Awesome, thank you. The recent discussion about UHD stuff made me realize that I haven't owned a physical copy of Halloween since the excellent excellent 25th anniversary DVD set that came out years ago, and seeing the 35mm print last year had some crazy cool surprises I've never noticed from the low resolution of standard definition.

No, it has more to do with Michael hiding in the shadows, and seeing the car in the background of certain shots, the details of the scene with the mental hospital in the rain, etc.

Netflix has that new original horror film set in a hospital called Fractured. I haven't seen it yet, though.

Yea the opening scene I remember being pretty surprised by how clearly you can see Michael's face for a moment when he steals the car. And that was on a 1080p blu ray. 4k doesn't do a whole lot as far as increased sharpness(at least on a regular sized t.v.) but I'd still call it an upgrade, and then the HDR really takes it to another level.

Most older films like Halloween are actually reasonably priced on UHD too, which is nice. Even the week it was released it was only $20 and it's $15 now.

Alien on UHD was $15 at release, I suspect it was to make up for that godawful artwork they put on the cover.

DMM is a massive platform with an insane volume of various stuff and services on it. A few years ago they separated their adult stuff and regular stuff into two different sites so you can avoid that easily if you want to just go to https://www.dmm.com/en/ it will detect your region and let you use it in English (if you want to seek it out, I believe "dmm18" is the URL for their adult stuff). If it doesn't just click the "ENGLISH" button on the upper right of the site, I don't believe they give any issues with buying stuff on it anymore either as long as you have a credit card and not a debit card?

Has anyone seen John Carpenter's Someone's Watching Me? In Myers We Trust recommended it as a true follow-up to Halloween that was made-for-TV right after Halloween, but didn't get any attention since DTV movies could get lost in the noise. I'm gonna look into it regardless, because they made it sound awesome, but I was curious if anyone's seen it.

All of the Halloween sequels scared the crap out of me as a kid, so I'll always have fond memories of them regardless of how I may evaluate them now with a more critical eye.

The Halloween 6 Producer's Cut is really very interesting because it leans more into some of the stuff that people complain about(the samhain/druids stuff), but I think the movie is improved by it because for better or worse, it's what things appeared to have been leading to and the original climax to that movie always felt super random and abrupt.

I only just found out about it this weekend and I've been debating buying it and giving it a watch. I imagine its still a bad movie but it sounds like its at least (a) more coherent of a story that pays off the cult stuff and (b) more of a Halloween movie and less of a 90s studio one with cuts/score/scene edits.
