I don't know if there's any merit to it but the only other reason I can come up with is that Daulerio is absurdly stupid

I think it was just him. He later said he went into it determined not to give them anything or take it seriously, which was obviously a major miscalculation in retrospect

Remember about 3 years ago when a bunch of people were in this thread arguing that a billionaire oligarch shadow-suing Gawker via Hulk loving Hogan in order to bankrupt a publication he didn’t like via the legal system was good, actually, because someone who hadn’t been associated with the site for years was a creep?

If not jump back to about page 275 and read on!!

In fairness I did that and a lot of the people arguing for that don’t appear to be regular posters in this thread anymore and were likely reading just because the trial.

That was still pretty funny, to be fair.

That... ok yeah that supports the "absurdly stupid" theory. I swear I can remember reading a post on some gawker site about how they realized he was being funded when he kept the trial going for a long time beyond what they'd expect of his financial situation but I can't find it so maybe I made it up in my head.

my position has always pretty much been is that it sucked that Deadspin from 2014 on was built on the remains of Daulerio's salted earth because it was never going to last, much like something will eventually take down Barstool

because gently caress there is absolutely vile poo poo that Daulerio pulled

this is absolutely what they were trying to do with Hogan, who at the time this entire poo poo storm had started in 2012 hadn't worked for WWE for 5 years and was taking random endorsement deals because he needed the cash

lol the podcast was recorded before the staff walk out. It’s more sad than interesting.

The Ringer basically never mentions, links to, or talks about deadspin, and that's continuing. They've also been rather noticeably sticking to sports lately, after some (mediocre) attempts at political content early on. I'm hoping there's not a general blackball situation going on.

Here's probably a stupid question: why didn't they go on strike?

the media podcast with Curtis and Shoemaker will cover it, as they spent sometime discussing Deadspin's situation over the past month. No one else really writes about sports media for them. Someone named Justin Charity seems to write articles about politics and someone else writes about tech but that's the closest they get to incisive criticism that extends beyond ranking things or asking if something is overrated. Brian Phillips probably has something interesting to say about this (as he is an OG blog boy) but he's probably busy writing about The Watchmen and our collective unconscious.

My name is Oliver Queen...

Magary especially isn't gonna have trouble finding work; I'm just hoping this means he had some sort of out clause on his contract that keeps him from being hosed over for jumping ship.

Deadspin's front page is kind of comical now that they're down to a few staffers. The last post is from 3:00 yesterday even though a team won game seven of the World Series last night. I like Kotaku's current crew as much as I liked Deadspins; their exodus is probably inevitable now too. :(
