There is currently a new version of Raimi's The Evil Dead with 4k restoration, new sound design and new score. It is currently in theaters only, and there is no word of a physical release. I think it's absolute a must-watch for Evil Dead fans. I loved it. I almost skipped out on it, because I've seen The Evil Dead a million times. I'm glad I went, because it's one of--if not the--best way I've ever seen it. I did a full write-up in the October Challenge, if you want specifics. Don't sleep on it. If it's playing near you, it's worth the trip.

Joined the From Beyond club last night, I enjoyed it. Good effects and design, pacing is decent, and a great descent into madness. It's been decades since I've seen Re-Animator, so it's definitely making me want to rewatch that again at some point.

For how the movie looks, like I have it on VHS and on an old DVD so I never saw the need and forgot about it. It's kind of crazy how few blu-rays we have compared to VHS and DVD tapes we had gotten over the years. Streaming really did the trick after all. Embarrassingly, I've realized I've never seen any Rob Zombie, so since we were all talking about it a few pages back, I just watched Halloween (2007). What a brutal film. It was great, but also a lot...sleazier? than the original. Even for a horror film there was a lot more sexual content than I'm used to. And we could have done without the graphic rape scene, jesus. But I loved the backstory stuff on Michael- to me it makes him more frightening than the inexplicable automaton of the original. His DIY masks were an excellent design. Time for a break to obtain candy and then onto Zombie's Halloween II! gently caress I'm going to miss this month.

It's a great movie in many ways, but Ezra Godden is nowhere near Jeffrey Combs's caliber. It's missing that over-the-top commitment.

This is a bit frustrating because the theatrical version cuts out the rape scene, but it ALSO cuts out a lot of small moments during Michael and Loomis' brief conversations/etc. that add a lot and develop Loomis more too. But the theatrical ending is totally different and significantly worse than the cut you saw too so it's still the definitive version of the movie. Halloween II...does the theatrical version even exist on home video? I totally missed it in theaters but IIRC some people think its ending is better than the director's cut.

I assume the rape scene you guys are talking about is not in the work print version of Halloween? I don’t remember anything like that and boy that movie didn’t need more exploitation in that area. Like I said in my spoilers, the amount of nudity was really pointlessly excessive especially given that the Weinsteins were involved in some capacity.

I recently saw The Witch for the first time and I thought it was great, probably the most unique and well-made horror movie I've seen this decade (although I don't normally watch a lot of horror). There are a lot of themes at work here but what I mostly got from it is that devotion to family and God blows and being a witch is fukken awesome.
