all that says is that Natalie's circle of older trans friends is full of loving assholes. it really explains a lot if the only positive people in her life are cis, lol.

I am also really starting to think about drag as an aesthetic, and how consumption of drag entertainment has become very popular with gen X and millennial liberals, but a lot of millennial and zoomer trans people are deeply uncomfortable with it and think it often reinforces the binaries it's meant to skewer. for whatever bizarre reason my mom asked me for an explanation of drag once, and I tried to be as sympathetic as possible, but she had a valid point that, although it's not a 1:1 thing, there are parallels between doing drag and putting on, say, a traditional native American costume as a white person. sure, drag is more defensible than that, but there is still a risk of offense, of cruelty, of this becoming a mean parody rather than a subversion. Gender can seem like an oppressive construct, but a lot of people just live with it as part of who they are, and if drag is done poorly, it can seem like it's trying to make people feel bad about an aspect of their identity.

Which is not to say drag is bad, but the way in which largely well-off cis gay men have appropriated it and used it to achieve mainstream success does have, uh, side effects. and although Natalie Wynn is a transwoman, her following acts in a lot of ways like the fans of RPDR, when it comes under criticism. In both cases, the vast majority of the stans are cis, binary.

it's just, you know, I've been struggling for almost my whole life to figure out why I don't like drag, and yet have always wanted to wear women's clothing. and I've finally gotten somewhere near an answer to that.

I've only seen Revolution and I found it fine if very rough at points. It recycled a lot of the same jokes and the characterisation was pretty flat without the stories where they bait and switch just for a joke

What do you think of my friend's thoughts on drag, seems similar to what you're describing here (context: an older mutual FB friend of us heard from another party about drag being 'trans blackface'):

quote:

while drag began as a way for queer pocs to express themselves and explore their own self-expression, it has become more and more heavily co-opted and commercialised over the last two or so decades, which has in turn led to an almost total divorce from its cultural roots. the main issue here is that while drag has often been an exploratory mode of expression that’s led to drag queens realising that they’re actually trans, the attitude of programmes like ru-paul’s drag race more or less silently enforces that the point of drag is to laugh at men dressing up as something they are not - a brush that trans and genderqueer people are often painted with. thus, while calling drag queens “trans blackface” is most likely tantamount to a performative white intersectionalist’s reading of what drag culture has become, it unfortunately makes sense as a conclusion somebody could coherently come to

oh absolutely agree

and add to this for me a deep uncomfortability with artifice, probably related to being on the autism spectrum. I
I want to wear different clothing than what I'm currently wearing, but because I think that clothing looks more aesthetically pleasing, would be comfortable, and would project a more authentic version of me. I see drag and I get upset - I don't want to be like that, and I don't want to be perceived like that.

There's some really great gags but there's also a lot of 'hey guys, remember slayers?' you'd expect from a reboot like that. Hopefully if they make another thing soon (and they've been teasing that they will) they just let it be its own thing rather than trying to force in callbacks to old jokes.

Yeah, they do like games like that. Aside from just normal people, people with tiny dicks who want to feel powerful do tend to gravitate towards military history stuff like that.. see also certain leftists and their fetishization of Soviet propaganda.

But I'm not really convinced it helps to normalize those ideas just cause you're fighting PanzerFuhrer1488 and his 7 buddies. Like how many chat comments and user names do you remember after playing?

The net-nazis were already the way they are before wargames, them trying to latch onto those with varying levels of transparency is more than anything entertaining, cause it makes them more satisfying to shoot. Plus if you remember to/care to report them, there's plenty of games that actually will get them for 88's, 1488's, HH's and all their not-so-coded anymore poo poo, mileage will vary on that case to case obviously, but I've seen enough idiots cry about their totally innocent they promise names getting slapped down in different shooty tank games to know it does happen.

Wargame Nazi's were a big thing long before the internet. Before Warhammer came along and swallowed the market, WW2 tabletop wargames were the big grognard thing. As you'd imagine you had the exact same spread of wehraboos and apologists that gravitated to the Nazi sides.
