it’s not as bad with alcohol I believe, I had a massive argument with a pharmacology student about this and she shut me down and made me accept her evidence that it’s safe to take paracetamol after alcohol. perhaps chronic alcohol use is bad, but the story about acute alcohol and paracetamol being hepatotoxic is overstated

Notorious b.s.d. posted:

the recommendation is 1g per day if you drink alcohol at all, like, ever. not 1g on a day you drink alcohol, 1g a day ever

acetaminophen is extremely bad poo poo and you should not be taking several grams a day

if you need high doses of an NSAID ask your doctor. you will likely be prescribed ibuprofen or naproxen, and warned strictly about alcohol

(however, alcohol + ibuprofen just causes stomach bleeding. not horrible, agonizing death.)

overdosing on acetaminophen will absolutely kill you, in an extremely painful and drawn out way. always pay attention to other drugs you take because acetaminophen is added to all sorts of other drugs.

i've been working with my doctor on pain relief for over two years now, this isn't something i'm doing out of the blue or on my own. last year my doc said i can take acetaminophen long term, but i should never exceed 3g per day or 1g per 6 hr period, and i should only take it based on need (i should have written "i now take up to 3g per day" to make that more clear - i'm not literally taking 21g per week).

i don't tolerate nsaids anymore (ibuprofen, naproxen, topical voltaren, and even enteric coated diclofenac all cause issues). my having to stop taking ibuprofen or naproxen is what pushed me to go to the dr in the first place, we tried voltaren and diclofenac and those had the same side effects.

tramadol and codeine work well but I want to avoid these because opioids are associated with an increased risk of premature death (more than nsaids or acetaminophen), even mild ones like tramadol. the formulations I tried had me taking up to 2.4g of acetaminophen per day too so lol if i'm going to take that when acetaminophen alone takes away enough of my pain.

oxycodone does nothing for me, which is weird because i respond really well to codeine and morphine vOv

so we're going with acetaminophen (plus lifestyle changes) for now.

probably the shittiest part of getting older is the universe starts throwing you situations where you really can't win, you just chose the least-bad option.

this is interesting

if there’s new info on paracetamol toxicity then it hasn’t filtered down to us 🤷‍♂️

absolutely insight meditation can do wonders here but it’s not “easy”, it’s not relaxing into a pain free state but actively probing and being interested in the pain directly in a way that takes away from the “sting”

plus insight meditation is one of the best things i’ve ever done in my life

it’s ridiculous, they loosened the restrictions and i was like finally we can have a good sleep remedy that’s safe but lol i’m still restricted to selling it to over 55s for a maximum of 13 weeks after I have determined it’s for primary insomnia (and not like anxiety etc)

well, you can overdose on anything

but realistically not really. some people take ten mg at night, idk what happens when you do it for a long time. it’s just that as a treatment for sleep it’s so much better than sedating antihistamines which are over the counter or benzo likes which are bad news 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, hyperhydration, overhydration, or water toxemia, is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by excessive water intake.

Water, just like any other substance, can be considered a poison when over-consumed in a brief period of time. Water intoxication mostly occurs when water is being consumed in a high quantity without adequate electrolyte intake.[2]

it is one of those weird facts that drinking too much water is the cause of more serious health incidents than drinking too little is. it is simultaneously true that people generally should drink more water for the sake of their general well-being, but our bodies are extremely on the ball when it comes to dealing with dehydration (many of them making you feel like poo poo so you drink something), but has no real concept of excessive hydration, so the first signs are extremely serious.

you have to drink so freaking much though.

i was taking 10mg for a while and dropped to 3 when my sleep habits were more stable, then to 1.5, as far as i could tell nothing changed terribly and i dont recall negative side effects from regular use or reduced use

i will say that after a week of no use i slip back to my old bad sleep quality. ive added some helpful stuff since the last time i tried that like a fitted bite guard and better white noise so it might be time to try again

Probably because that's what it bills itself as: pracitcal martial arts for ~street fighting~ (and to be fair, it does have a pretty rad nazi fighting pedigree). So groin strikes, throat strikes, all fair game

But we don't spar or anything, so yeah I doubt I'd have the wearwithall to use any of it in an actual fight.

I've boxed for exercise for the last 5 years or so and have never once tried sparing, I'd like to though, just to get a glimpse of what a real fight is.
