Lt. Lizard posted:

Uh, I think it depends. The Tsukihime was the first Type Moon Visual Novel, when they were just tiny fan-studio and it shows. Compared to F/SN it's rougher around the edges in almost every aspect. It's art oscillates between bad and mediocre, it has a lot of even more random dead ends, parts of it are even slower and more plodding than the slow, plodding parts of Heavens Feel route, it adheres to a lot of anime cliches that later works subvert or outright ignore and instead of handful of mercifully short H-scenes of F/SN (or none, if you have enhanced edition), there's shitload of them, some of them pretty long, some of them seriously creepy in a bad way and all of them with even worse writing than F/SN ones. If you can stomach all of that, Tsukihime has some pretty great story and world, with bunch of memorable characters and overall it's significantly more horror-like, but that's pretty big if.

For what it's worth, the last time I replayed Tsukihime was something like 7 years ago, and I don't really feel the need to replay it ever again.

Tsukihime is very raw compared to later works Nasu wrote. Half of the routes were written in a fever dream and Kohaku only exists because Takeuchi decided that having twin maids was the best idea ever.

There's a lot of visceral honesty to it as he turns up the horror and Tsukihime does go some unique places. Shiki's personality wildly escalates between bland VN protagonist, serial killer, and a snarky dude. There's an entire route in which 90% of it's narrative is the protagonist being bedridden and going completely insane. The split between "Near Side" and "Far Side" is wild and creates divergences that make no sense as a result of the player's choices and the main antagonist of the game becomes increasingly irrelevant as you dive deeper in the game. I think Kohaku's route was written over a weekend and a dozen pots of coffee but it's a fascinating climax to the entire story.

I can understand the reason the theoretical Tsukihime remake has taken this long to partly be that it needs a complete rewrite - the result of merely cleaning up the text/structure a bit and upping the production values would likely still feel quite embarrassing to Nasu after all this years, as well as something of a disservice to their fans and to themselves to limit it to just that if they're already undertaking the project.

The final product might keep the characters and themes and perhaps some of the iconic story beats, but I suspect it'll otherwise be a drastically different retelling.

Never quacked for this
I doubt writing is the issue. Nasu is an extremely fast writer when he needs to.

https://oneofepisodes.wordpress.com/2017/03/22/translation-4gamer-interview-with-kinoko-nasu-and-yosuke-shiokawa-on-fgo-march-2017-part-1/

quote:

Nasu: [...] then when I asked, “So when’s the deadline?” they said, “Tomorrow.” (awkward laugh)

4Gamer: That would certainly wipe the smile off anyone’s face. (laughs) Was that the first time you heard of that?

Nasu: Yes. Forget about not having written a single letter of the scenario; it wasn’t even on my mind at the time. [...] Back then, I was the only writer who could work at the time, so I replied, “Alright, I’ll have it done by tomorrow somehow, so you all should prepare to die too to get this event off the ground.”

From what I've heard of Mahoyo's development, a lot of the time was in what came after the writing, particularly the programming. (Remember the VNs are done in-house.) I wouldn't be surprised if TsukiRe has been stuck in a similar situation.

IT'S SHOWTIME!

The worst part of Tsukihime for me is that Akiha and Hisui got hosed when it came to endings, both of them were horribly depressing. So if the remake ever comes out them getting happy endings is all I care about.

It would be pretty amazing for Sacchin's route to be, inexplicably, without any sort of setup, suddenly hijacked by Taiga. Gonna have wait for a FSN remake for the official Sacchin route when she returns the favor.

Akiha's ending wasn't that depressing, and it gets expanded upon in KT.

Hisui's Good End isn't ideal but it's nevertheless pretty comfy.

So I played and finished Tsukihime. It was definitely rough around the edges but I liked the game overall. Real curious to see how the remake will change things up too, especially if they actually do the Sacchin route and such.

Ryukishi07 must have played this, right? It feels like Umineko takes a decent bit of inspiration from it.

EDIT: Oh yeah of course he has, that one Higurashi character is based on Ciel.

There are also a pair of siblings in the JRPG Tales of Hearts named Hisui and Kohaku.

It just means Jade and Amber though, so the names themselves are kind of a natural pairing.
