Well that's why Kojima's over-the-topness worked for MGS, isn't it. The braggadocio gameplay was thematically consistent with the writing and characters. I think something with more meditative gameplay like Death Stranding needs a subtler treatment that isn't afraid to shut up and let the player experience things for themselves.

I'll tell you when I finish the game. I think carting poo poo around like an Amazon partner (who is referred to as the most legendary Amazon partner) in actual hell on earth with whale ghosts and sneaking around as a normal soldier (referred to as the most legendary normal soldier) at a military base commandeered by supernatural warriors trying to steal their dead gay clone dad's mechwarrior have a lot in common tonally.

Why not have this game take place in actual Iceland/Ireland if you want to ape this kind of landscape? The map scale would make more sense as well. If Kojima wanted his game to look "surreal" and "alien", why not actually create a surreal and alien landscape instead of aping something that actually exists? (not to mention that describing the countryside of another country as alien is a bit weird).
Does this game really need to take place in the US? Does the theme of connectivity only apply to the American experience? Does Kojima see Iceland as too backwater? That it doesn't have ads or the internet? Is he cynical about Americans being uninterested in his weird game if it doesn't take place in the US?

imho he's dunking on americans and our incessant need to hate each other for both valid reasons, and for the dumbest fuckin inconsequential poo poo imaginable

hence why sam "reedus and the fetus" porter needs to RECONNECT america

I haven't felt bored once in 10 hours. The vehicles aren't great but I don't know the trick to making the bike not gently caress up and jam on rocks. It's for smooth surfaces.

Been playing for a bit and it's fine. Graphics are nice, drunkenly stumbling around in a green field with a screaming baby under grey skies really approximates what I imagine being in the apocalypse\an Irish mother is like. Nothing really strikes me as especially good yet, but I'm not angry either.

Also, this is def not the Tarkovsky of video games; this is the high concept\low brow Hollywood movie of video games. It's got McConaughey's Serenity levels of a stupid writer thinking they're clever oozing off of it... which is a plus, mind.

They were giving specific reasons why they wanted the game's cinematic presentation to be an entirely different direction. This isn't being condescending, it's just that everyone digs different things. I'd rather we have those different things. I really like the choices he made and I'm passionate about it, and I don't consider it bad writing.

How is yours that I should accept what I think is good, is in fact bad, a less condescending take?

Everyone has their own personal preferences, but my issues with Death Stranding run a bit deeper than that, because I think what Kojima is trying to achieve thematically is directly betrayed by the game's own wordy presentation. When everything otherworldly and strange is explained immediately thereafter by a voice actor who hasn't internalized the character (because there is none), it becomes a greater structural problem. As I'm playing through Death Stranding I can't help but think about Control, another game to recently convey a horrific extradimensional invasion of America, and really appreciate its comparatively sparse exposition that simply allowed things to be weird.

Dude read what I said, I'm not even saying that the game has bad writing. I'm saying that if it does, then it's still okay to like said thing but you don't have to keep re-contextualizing it for people who don't like it. That's what I find to be condescending.
