I remember hearing a particular piece of music when I was about 8 years old, and I know I haven't heard it since then but I still somehow remember almost all of it. It was an instrumental track played on guitar and flute (so I can't search for lyrics), and it basically sounded like this:

I think I might have an answer for you! I used to love the whole album it's from. Look up the track "Facing West" by the Pat Metheny group from his Secret Story album.

This is more “identify a genre” than a song...

The mournful Eastern European-esque clarinet you can hear as a sample here (0:55 - 1:55) — https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8v9JQ2f4XM&t=55s

or all throughout Tom Waits’ “All the World Is Green” —

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg7wRhtYXnw&t=31s

...what kind of music is that? It sounds very much like the kind of clarinet melodies in Jewish klezmer music, but klezmer is also often joyful, upbeat, and fast tempo, and I feel like listening to a whole album of nothing but mournful clarinet music right now which doesn’t convey emotions like “happiness” or...idk...”hope.”

:smith:

But seriously, how would I search for more music like that?

This has been bugging me for a while, in the theme music to Gumball I'm sure I hear a musical reference to the theme of a British kids show from the past, it's at about 9 seconds in in this video:

Maybe from rainbow? Gumball is made in the UK so it would make sense.

Back in 95 - 96 I heard a song on a college university radio station during a "radio rave", in the Detroit area. It was a hardcore techno song that began with a sermon/prayer by a preacher talking about fire & brimstone then broke into a moaning & screaming voice that was twisted and distorted. Some time later my house was robbed and among what was stolen was a recording. 20+ years later it is till rattling about in my head.

Others have suggested it may be The Running Man (Butcher of Bakersfield Rmx).

What's up Detroit goon, I'm getting some flashbacks of sneaking drinks at City Club when I was a teen. I know I've heard the song you're talking about, maybe Ministry or Skinny Puppy. It's got me in the mood to reminisce so I'm listening to old albums, I'll let you know if I find it.

Around 2006-2007 I was in an Asian-American studies course in college and we listened to a version of “Famous Are the Flowers” that I absolutely cannot find anymore. It was really upbeat, mainly acoustic guitars as the instrumentation I believe, and had a nice bright little riff at the start. It’s so frustrating because I know the name of the song but that specific version seems impossible to find.

(It also starts with a spoken word section under the music, if that helps)

Update: I found it, it was the Peter Moon Band

So I heard this song on LL Cool J's Sirius XM channel, and now over a day later I remember it and want to hear it again but I can't remember what it was called, just that it's got a single-syllable title, the vocals shift whenever they hit that title, the artist has a single-word name, and it fits that channel's classic hip-hop focus.

I wish I could say anything more specific than that, but that's why I'm losing it over here.

Okay Goons, maybe you can help me. I’m searching for this hip-hop/rap music video, which I actually discovered through these very forums.

I don’t know the lyrics, but the content had to do with a guy having a back and forth with a hoe working at the club. He says something ignorent about the life she lives, and then the song switches to her prospective and voice, with her talking about the harshness and loneliness of her life, and that she’s actually a single mother trying to keep her child fed.

I remember that at the end of the video, the woman gets groped, she loses it, and runs out of the nightclub/strip Club/photo studio she’s at, then hurries home and tearfully hugs her child. She puts up with this lifestyle to make sure that her child has it better than her - that’s her motivation.

I remember it being an intense, emotionally devastating track, and I’d love to hear it again. Goons, any idea what that song’s called?

Music video. It’s the band playing the song alternating with the vocalist walking in a forest. It’s a rock band format, but maybe poppier/indie-er? Lyrics maybe mention something about giant footprints/ancients?? The video definitely has this cool effect where the guitar strings ripple up and down when they’re played, and the vocalist is wearing this dress with long tassels that bounce and ripple when she dances

It can yield surprisingly accurate results these days versus my old go-to method (listening really hard for lyrics and then googling those in quotes), great for instrumentals in particular though. Definitely a nice app to keep around for stuff you hear out and about

Alright, this song is an instrumental electronic type song from the early 80s. It is very ethereal and downtempo but kind of sweet and despite it being of that era does not sound as dated as you'd think. The title of the song or the band is "something of love" where something is obviously another word. It's like an 8 minute track and stays relatively consistent and repetitive throughout but gets a bit more lush towards the end.

Coincidentally what reminded me of it was watching this year’s Eurovision with my friend who’s obsessed with it. Maybe, but I’m not sure. I’m incredibly apathetic about Eurovision and only know it even exists because this friend posts about it constantly every year. It could’ve been something he showed me, or just a similar stage vibe

Either way, Sweden is decidedly not Russian, and that singer is a soprano, not a contralto-tenor, so not that

edit: actually, I think it might NOT be from Eurovision cuz I feel it might’ve been regular pop song length (3:30-4:30), and the above friend said Eurovision songs are limited to 3:00
