I think the actual canon explanation is that it was to accommodate Muggleborn students who were used to having toilets and not just dropping trou on the spot like an animal. As awful as some of the info from Rowling is, she does do a good job of portraying wizarding society as socially and mentally crippled by not having to develop non-magical methods of doing everything in life.

Yeah that was canon. Same explanation for why the bathrooms aren't actually anywhere near the dormitory areas (oddly a pretty significant plot point) where they would make sense, they were added after the fact since plumbing came around a few centuries after the school. Before that, everyone was pretty much on the same page with just making GBS threads in your bedroom (chamber pots).
