It started when Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock got fired shortly after the Leafs lost yet another game, in part due to this insane save: https://images.app.goo.gl/FG3EEaReaDPuzogw6

Now, normally when a coach gets fired the team looks like they're at a funeral for a while. The Leafs responded by basically saying 'gently caress it, hockey is fun again' and winning. Nobody has come forward to say what a great coach Babcock was, and in fact a whole bunch of stories of what a sour rear end in a top hat he is have been coming out.

But! Former player Akim Aliu disclosed that one of Babcock's proteges, Bill Peters, is not only a sour rear end in a top hat but a racist one! https://twitter.com/Dreamer_Aliu78/status/1199119380774359045?s=19

Peters is 'being investigated' by the Calgary Flames, so that's likely two head coaches down. The Athletic is doing some OK reporting on this, but it could use Petchesky snarking about hockey.

And also! Reformed Hockey rear end in a top hat Daniel Carcillo is now spilling dirt on the Sutters, a family of Alberta rednecks who are hockey royalty: https://twitter.com/CarBombBoom13/status/1199497677802749953?s=19

And I'm reduced to trawling Twitter to find out how hockey is finally purging itself of the good old boys that have plagued it for too long.

Dudes are just outing themselves over this too

You can literally go to this forum's hockey thread, reddit, or any content aggregator or media outlet if you're just looking for a summary of tweets which is all deadspin would have done about this; no one would have actually talked to deadspin even if they reached out. As you said the Atlantic has been doing a good job on covering this whole situation. Outside of one or two very prominent stories, the only person who consistently did real deal investigative journalism in the sports world was Diana Moskovitz and her beat was mostly sexual assault and gender issues. When the site started shifting how they cover things 5+ years ago they needed more people like her and less bloggers. Honestly, Diana and Dom are the only two writers whose work I truly miss there.

Like you said the Atlantic has been doing a good job of covering this (and basically everything they cover, they're worth the money).

I think it was funny enough for a few years there, but it's like once the writers had come up with 20 jokes they said "well, that should be enough to last us several more years" and they just kept going back to the same wells over and over again.

The League felt like it existed in the same universe as all Budweiser ads.

I think everyone on the show had other gigs going at the end that they just mailed it in. INick Kroll was only doing a couple episodes a season at the end. First couple seasons were good though.

Their college coverage is all boot licking bullshit

Their pro sports coverage is also universally awful too. Puck daddy at least used to be somewhat interesting for a bit when Wysh was still there but its just so bad now.

I think we can all agree the worst is Barstool but in terms of fighting for second place, Yahoo is making a decent argument.

Thats been my struggle since Deadspin imploded - yeah The Athletic is nice for real news but what about the loving jokes? The Ringer is too try-hard.

Eh I've gotten a few butt dials even in the past year. Depends on the person, as I don't have a passcode on my phone yet haven't managed to do it.

It can be three things. Anyone who's not a barstool chud knows what happened to Deadspin and would have zero faith in management. Anyone who would work for them despite that knows they're getting lowballed badly. Anyone who'd work for them despite both of those things aren't on g/o's radar because they're massively incompetent.

The most frustrating thing about this is how the people in charge, including Spanfeller, are going to fail upwards.
