With some very minor changes you could turn Pinocchio into a horror movie for adults.

It's been some years but if I remember rightly from the story Pinocchio's based on, they're turned into donkeys and are shipped off to be sex slaves.

Pretty much all the original stories the Disney movies were based from could qualify as horror stories.

It's really a classic human trafficking setup in Pinocchio including smooth charming pimp type characters (the fox -?Honest John?) and substance abuse and other goodies before the hammer comes down.

Dunno about the other one.

Overlord is extremely good if you go in knowing and accepting it is not going to be about tons of nazi zombies getting killed Evil Dead style. It's trying to be a real movie instead and succeeds.

I saw it twice and it was boring as hell both times. It peaked when they first got to the lab and never really went further. It’s not a film that should build and then stop building that early on.

Frankenstein’s Army kept pushing it until the very last frame. That movie is insane and I have no rational idea how they made that film.

My mistake. It peaks during the attic scene where the dude tries the serum and goes nuts. That was the last time the film tried to build to anything.

Yup, still creepy even as an adult. Gorgeous animation too.

Hey, any one in this thread know of any good animated horror things? Are we allowed to talk anime in this thread? Because if so: Kakurenbo is a great short film.

Imma take a bold stance and say neither, & watch The Keep instead.

Anyways: let’s chart the most convoluted franchise mythologies, because I just watched Ragini MMS-2, and lol.

Ragini MMS (which we can refer to as Ragini MMS-1) is presented, diegetically, as a recreation/reenactment of an illegal porno called ‘Ragini MMS’. The tape (which we can refer to as Ragini MMS-A) is never shown, but allegedly contains evidence of paranormal activity and/or murder. Ragini MMS-2 is then a diegetic sequel to Ragini MMS-1, about a fictional attempt to film an adaptation of Ragini MMS-A under the title ‘Ragini MMS’. The characters refer to this adaptation as ‘Ragini MMS-2’, but we can call it Ragini MMS-B.

To put things more clearly: Ragini MMS-2 is a satire of the concept of making a satirical sequel to a remake of a haunted porno, about a hypothetical alternate adaptation of the same nonexistent haunted porno.

Everything falls flat because the weak horror elements make the "serious" war stuff complete bullshit and the horror stuff doesn't go crazy enough; it's a complete missed opportunity. The characters suck rear end too.

The only good thing about Army of Frankensteins is the poster image. Absolutely nothing happens until the last 10-15 minutes and even then it's not much.

I had my expectations of Overlord tampered by goons mentioning that the film that was advertised is only a small part of the film.

I absolutely enjoyed it. Different strokes for different folks, but I found the whole thing fun, exciting, and with lots of visceral moments. The the whole airplane segment was exciting and stressful, and one of the best set pieces of 2018. I can think of ways to improve it, but it's just a thoroughly enjoyable movie as it is. It's also a good one to watch with friends.

Anybody else see Nekrotronic/Nekromancer on Shudder? I wanted to like it, but we couldn't get through it. It's kind of a mashup of The Matrix and a silly Ghostbusters that doesn't quite gel.

I've decided that I don't like movies where the protagonist is The Chosen One, but doesn't even know he's a Special Person, so the rest of the Secret Special People have to drag him along while he flails around learning the ropes. It seems like obvious pandering: you gotta, gotta, gotta have a white male protagonist, but it's okay, he looks like a loser while his sidekicks show him up! No, just make the movie about the sidekicks, if you can get the financing.

Yeah, it’s not very good but I still enjoyed watching it. Partly because I really liked wyrmwood too and partly because I want people to make silly stupid movies that I can laugh at 20 years from now. The same way I love crazy 80s and 90s movies. Nekrotronic is very much a low budget movie so I don’t judge it as hard.

I mean, Michael Mann is always the answer if he’s one of the choices, but I’ve seen it already.

Anyway, both Frankenstein movies were pretty dour. Frankenstein’s Army was the better of the two but not by much. The found footage aspect of it could’ve been interesting, but the constant effects they used looked cheap and distracting, and I couldn’t stand the whacky violent guy, there’s a lot they could’ve done with using Russians as the protagonists, but the main characters all felt pretty base. Army of Frankensteins starts in the civil war era with a runaway slave making out with Johnny Reb only to get attacked by, wait for it, an army of frankensteins. Then it jumps to the modern era and gets even worse from there. I felt like I was watching a knock off of an Asylum movie while watching it.

I just watched Overlord too and thought it was pretty good. I liked the main protagonist a lot and the plane sequence and the oner as he’s escaping the lab were really cool. Probably could’ve done with a bigger cast so we could get a bigger body count but I also appreciated how lean it was.

From a Buick 8 is one of those King books that sounds dumb as hell but is actually pretty decent. At least I thought so when I read it over a decade ago.
