Take your old one with you when you go to the junkyard, I went through it with my Civic Si and found three ones that were slightly bent before I got a straight one.

A trick I learned recently is to use a torch, but turn the oxygen up so you've got a slightly oxidizing flame. Then hold it against the bearing race (without hitting the oxygen) and it'll sort of just wash it away. It takes a while but is way less likely to gouge the material behind it. Unfortunately I didn't learn this trick until after I destroyed a $5600 differential pinion....

Slight problem with that. Out of the 3 self-service junkyards local to me, only ONE has a car I can pull parts from. And it's car, not cars - they have exactly one (04 version of my car). if I want to try to drive to Dallas, then there's four possible in the 5 or so Pick n Pull yards (all have been there entirely too long for me to be comfortable gambling on them having the parts I need). The number goes up to six if I can use a Legacy front knuckle, but the two Legacies that show up are sedans, not wagons (the wagon one should work fine, don't know about the sedan version). These cars are old enough that there's not a whole lot left on the road, and the ones left tend to be pretty well taken care of. They don't pop up in yards often, and even ebay isn't much help. It also DEFINITELY doesn't have the original knuckle - there's "RF" written on both the rotor and knuckle in paint pen - so there's no telling if the one I have is even straight. (also, I'd have to drive this car to the junkyard...) EKDS5k posted:A trick I learned recently is to use a torch, but turn the oxygen up so you've got a slightly oxidizing flame. I wasn't the one handling the blue tipped wrench - I've never used one myself, I left that up to the shop owner. He was swearing just as much as I was that the fucker wouldn't pop after being torched, he finally left it sitting in the press with it cranked enough to deform the press for ~5 minutes while we started calling junkyards to see if any had a knuckle on hand We finally heard a POPCLANK when he was about to relieve pressure on it. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 18:55 on Nov 22, 2019 |

Those car haulers must be drat sturdy though, whenever I see one on the road it's wobbling around like a boat every time they hit a bump. If they can take that kind of abuse and still be recognizable that's pretty nuts.
