Isn't space explicitly NOT a warfighting domain?

There are treaties barring weaponizing space but it would be criminally stupid to plan as if a conflict could not break out in that environment. Somebody’s gotta deconflict maneuvers and be ready to minimize damage if ASATs start flying.

I just don’t think we need a masturbatory Space Force to accomplish that.

Theres a difference between preparing for the contingency of fighting in space and establishing space as a warfighting domain. Establish implies fighting there first to gain a leg up. Or atleast it does in normal human english and not whatever this wh deals in.

The USAF has been talking about space as a warfighting domain for a lot longer than this administration has and it’s been in the context of preparing for bad behavior by other nations. That’s the perspective I’m taking

The distinction they usually draw is between going kinetic in space (not recommended) and fighting a conflict in space through cyber attacks, denial and deception, and other means.

Hyten’s take on it is a little nuanced:

quote:

Altogether, the Air Force is working to make its space capabilities more flexible so it can respond faster, winning wars in ways enemies can’t predict. “It’s not space for space’s sake,” Hyten noted, because “there’s no such thing as war in space, there’s just war.”

Normally i would agree and say its just an awkward or bad word choice. Its just that its THIS admin so I'm way more likely to think theyre trying to figure out how to seal an f35 for space and make it ground to orbit capable than just preparing for the possibility of things happening there eventually.

Yeah, my questioning allowed for that, but it justs seems like approaching it as yet another sphere for an arms race is asking for trouble. I'm reminded of the Chinese Anti-Satellite testing that released tens of thousands of new pieces of space junk. With our own, and other country's gently caress ups in arms testing; I feel like active weaponization of space is just begging for Kessler syndrome.

Space was a warfighting domain since before we added information in 1995. Probably since before Reagan.

Holding the world as hostage just hasn’t occurred to them yet is my guess. Too focused on making missiles come down as opposed to just stay up there.

NK does prefer to have a stable of hostages. If NK has nowhere else to escalate to, they run out of reasons to hold the powers at bay. They've probably thought about it, prepared for it, and likely won't talk about it until they'ree exhausting another hostage
