This naturally lends itself to a willingness to chat and make spontaneous friends even amongst people who are generally disinterested in such things the rest of the year, as it is hard for even a jaded monster like myself to stand in stone silence when the people behind me in line are discussing the nuances of games that most Americans have never encountered, let alone spent time contemplating. But! What do you actually do once you are there? Well, besides taking in the infinite sights and sounds and donuts, you can check the event listing categories to get an idea of the range of events. When you realize every category has hundreds or thousands of events, you start to understand the scope of the show. Even a newcomer probably knows there will be role-playing and boardgame events, but when you realize there are three different categories just involving "doing something with miniatures" (which, now that I think of it, is truly a grognard-driven distinction), you get a sense of how much is going on at Gen-Con that you will never actually see even if you try. Rather than pretending I am reserving the third post for anything, I will just make it a random post, ensuring that I will suddenly wish I had reserved another post. After repeatedly seeing this thread-famous comic in examining the old threads...  ...I wondered if he actually did any other Gen Con comics, and actually found three others. One was not even tagged as "Gen Con" in his tagging system, so you are looking at some real deep cuts here. And uh... yeah you can see why the bathroom one is the one that got traction, but still these are important to your Gen-Conification    Actually though if you feel like wearing that outfit you really should go for it  Anyway I am going to occasionally just post random Gen-Con pictures going forward rather than adding another 100 to these posts. Though here have some more   thanks for that second one Google auto-Photos     Like every year, I am surely forgetting to talk about some huge segment of what Gen-Con is. Which, again, see the first points of the first post, further highlights how Gen-Con is THE BIGGEST AND BEST THING. But part of why I am so dedicated to actually getting this posted over a month before registration begins is so I can actually fix these oversights ahead of time rather than being like "hey everybody here is the thread, so uh registration was last week, sorry"

Excellent first posts as always, Quarex. Going to use this one to both promote the Gen Con Programs project and as a reminder to myself to try and find some time at work to update it. I haven't had a chance to do more with it since the 50th, but I need to talk to Gen Con to get more data and do some research stuff with it. On this site, you can look at all of the events from the first 50 Gen Cons so you can get a good idea of what people do there. It also has some oral histories I conducted with people from various parts of Gen Con's existence, and a little bit of baby research I did just to show what you can do with the data there: http://best50yearsingaming.com/ I'm going to plug one exhibit in particular that examined the change in how many women were running events at Gen Con. Loughmiller's let me down hard GC2019. We went there Friday or Saturday night (I forget which) for food with my booth staff to unwind after a long day of slinging bees, and not only did it take forever to get a seat (people just wouldn't leave even though they were done eating and not gaming) but once we did sit down they almost immediately started a live band that was waaaay too loud. The waitress sucked too, but she may have just been having a bad day. I dunno, I'll try them again but I know my booth staff have sworn them off for good.

I think they suffer from being a small staff mostly focused on lunches for the Indiana government employees that are across the street. Then here come this event that makes em a bunch of cash. Try again during lunch time and see if you get a better experience.

Left it in my bag last year and I missed out of millennium blades with a bunch of expansions going for $27.

I went to the auction for the first time last year and boy was it fun and had a lot of good deals. Ran like a well oiled machine as well and I got to watch the auctioneer verbally dismantle someone trying to bid by shouting out their number instead of showing their placard. I can't believe this is the first time you've ever mentioned the auction, Quarex. Some personal suggestions! -A backpack is much better IF you're not buying a ton of things and filling it so full that you're hitting people when turning, like Quarex said. I have a smaller one that fits everything I need just fine without being a nuisance. -Call your bank if you do decide to buy stuff at the vendor hall with a card. You WILL get flagged and declined then need to call your bank three times so they know that your card isn't stolen. Ask me about last year! This happens because the vendors themselves are based out of whatever country/state and the bank just sees your card getting charged in two different parts of the world at once. -There is a "quiet room" somewhere in the ICC, usually in a place far off from the hustle and bustle. If you're having a hard time with anxiety or similar, you can go there and relax. Low lights and silence. There are also donated toiletries and snacks if you need something. I forgot to put on deodarent one day so I popped over and grabbed a little travel size one because I'm not disgusting. They accept cash donations and also replacement items. -The arcade loving sucks, don't give them any money. -For your tickets and badges, Will Call is better depending on when you arrive. My first year we got there Thursday morning and it was five minutes long. The previous two years (this year we had them mailed) we got there Wednesday and the line was at least 45 minutes, even sometime after midnight. I now prefer getting everything mailed and checking every thirty seconds before leaving to make sure we have the tickets. If you forget them YOU ARE hosed unless someone can get into your house and overnight them. -If it's your first time, don't go hog wild on events. I felt so lost the first year even with friends to guide me. Buy yourself some generic tickets to slide into random stuff, and maybe schedule a couple things if you like them. I highly recommend anything One Shot does, even System Mastery. If you're lucky, Jim McClure will use your water bottle for a wrestling themed bit and after that you're basically famous. -The connected hotels and the ICC have water dispensers so keep your bottles full instead of just buying new ones. -If someone offers you Malort and you're not a teetotaller, take the drink. But if you are the least bit interested in finding out-of-print/uncommon/older gaming and gaming-adjacent things, the Auction really is the place to be. Also in theory I am working both T.O.V.A. and the Charity Auction this year, but you know, things change! Also the prevailing theory on Will Call is that when the lines are long, you should do Will Call the next year, as people will be fed up with the lines and have the badges shipped to them. I believe I heard they were a bit long last year, so clearly you can do Will Call for 2020! Generic Tickets are a great idea certainly, though interestingly they are going away once every event is e-ticketed in a few years. Though I still imagine this will instantly drop the average age of someone running a game by like 15 years, for better or worse. But yeah, overscheduling can always be a problem, and for some people underscheduling is just as big a problem. Nobody enjoys feeling like they are constantly running from one event from the other and never getting a chance to engage in all the nebulous floating fun going on all around them, and certainly there are people who feel completely disconnected from the fun if they do not have some structure to their day. hahahahahahhaahhaha This is only the second time I have had this happen to me, and a touch less angry than the first time (I do not remember the context beyond me telling someone in like 2005 that something was not funny, but the avatar was a dumb picture and the text was like "IS THIS ONE FUNNY DIPSHIT" and I remember almost keeping it since the comma splice made it sound like the avatar was questioning if I were a funny dipshit) Needless to say this one clearly gets to stay

I've lived in Indiana all my life and I've never been to Gen Con. Unfortunately I grew up in rural bumfuck Indiana where there aren't a lot of nerds of any stripe -unless you consider redneck potheads to be nerds- so that is probably why. I'm definitely going to the next one though.

Gary con has a hotel debacle this year that may top Gen Cons. The main hotel where the convention is sold out on minutes last march. Yesterday, for a mystery reason, they started sending people emails that they were being booted to another hotel 1.5 miles away. Supposedly this was for some error the hotel didnt notice for about 20 minutes, but people that booked seconds after the block opened are reporting getting the boot. Its indisciminent, vendors, people with accessibility issues, the people that run miniature games with Tupperware upon Tupperware of figures and terrain. Hundreds have posted on facebook complaining about it and to top it off the hotel is not apologizing in any way and generally being dicks about it. Gary con is less than 3 months away. Edit: also if you dont confirm the new or old booking by 12/30 they will cancel everything on you. This is all in an email that is going to spam for many people.
