Gen Con Indy. July 30 - August 2, 2020

"The Best Four Days in Gaming."

Gamer Mecca. Gamer mecha. Gamer mecca-lecca-hi, mecca-hiney-ho. A Gay Mer-MAGA.

The most important thing to know about Gen-Con is that it lives up to the hype*. No matter what you have heard about it, it is not exaggerated.

Crowds awaiting entry to the Exhibition Hall

Everywhere you look, there are nerds. The convention center and the surrounding blocks are jam-packed with nerdy activities, nerdy costumes, nerd-themed restaurants and coffee shops, and most importantly in my opinion, nerdy joy.

The most surprising thing about attending a huge nerd convention for me is that even background chatter and smalltalk becomes enthralling, as suddenly everyone around is much more likely to share your interests than anywhere else you go. This naturally lends itself to a willingness to chat and make spontaneous friends even amongst people who are generally disinterested in such things the rest of the year, as it is hard for even a jaded monster like myself to stand in stone silence when the people behind me in line are discussing the nuances of games that most Americans have never encountered, let alone spent time contemplating.

But! What do you actually do once you are there? Well, besides taking in the infinite sights and sounds and donuts, you can check the event listing categories to get an idea of the range of events. When you realize every category has hundreds or thousands of events, you start to understand the scope of the show. Even a newcomer probably knows there will be role-playing and boardgame events, but when you realize there are three different categories just involving "doing something with miniatures" (which, now that I think of it, is truly a grognard-driven distinction), you get a sense of how much is going on at Gen-Con that you will never actually see even if you try. Even if you only like one tiny obscure niche type of game, there is probably a world championship of that game taking place at Gen-Con.

Specific Goon-favorite activities include
  • Shots Wednesday, which, well, cannot be easily described, other than to say "Rathskeller, endless towers of shots, more Goons than you realized could possibly be attending, secret bonus table of teetotalers eating soft pretzels"
  • The Auction/Auction [Consignment] Store, which has both the best deals and the rarest things for sale at the entirety of the convention, particularly now that nearly every used gaming store has stopped coming to the Exhibition Hall. Of particularly note is the Friday night "crème de la crème" Auction nearly always featuring things that are virtually impossible to find, the Saturday afternoon/evening T.O.V.A. (Toys/Oddities/Video [Games]/Art) Auction generally featuring your very own Dr. Quarex and occasional incoherent-scream-bidding on absurd items from other Goons, and the final segment of the show, the Charity Auction, where you have a decent chance of shaming other people into spending hundreds of dollars on something worth $20 if you are into the shaming scene.
  • Talking about BEE MAN
  • Using GroupMe (get the APPPPP or just use GroupMe.com and then click here to join the GenGoons group!) to arrange constant spontaneous gaming sessions throughout the entire range of Wednesday - Sunday (and sometimes even Tuesday - Monday!)
  • Probably something else I dunno

And now, a word from the most genuinely surprising part of the Gen-Con Terms of Service

"I acknowledge and agree that the Convention involves some inherently dangerous activities.... I acknowledge and agree that the Convention involves potential risks of serious personal injury, disability, or even death."

Gen-Con, I am really not sure that I acknowledge and agree here

Here is 2019's housing registration explanation video; somehow I doubt much will change, though if they post a new one for 2020 I will dutifully update this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVxowlXXiHI&t=128s

-~=~- Intermission -~=~-

(The guy in the chair being carried was in 2002; the players had to prove they could carry another player this way in-game; the guy being lifted infamously ran over to me, inexplicably humiliated, after the picture was taken, and offered me $20 if I would let him destroy my $500 camera)
-~=~-

Anyway, no matter how I organize these posts it is always terrible, so I will just close this introductory text with CellBlock's succinct summary about his 2012 experiences, as a vision of what Gen-Con might be like for you:

CellBlock 2013 posted:

Holy balls is Gen Con cool, though. You really can find pretty much whatever you want to do going on in some way. Want to just booster draft M:tG for days on end? That's going on! Want to get into a weekend-long game of Arkham Horror with all the expansions? Someone from Fantasy Flight is probably facilitating that! Last year, I learned how to play Diplomacy, participated in a role play of the Cold War (I was an Israeli ambassador), played some games of Werewolf in the convention center lobby, and found a random group of people playing The Resistance in the game library that needed more players and played with them well into the wee hours of Friday night/Saturday morning.

TOVA TOVA TOVA
GENERAL "HOW TO GEN-CON" POST

You might want to consider bringing:
  • Messenger bags instead of backpacks, considering the frequency of people getting backpacked in the face by someone turning quickly in the Exhibit Hall. A dozen fanny packs would also be an acceptable alternative.
  • Cash! Yes, in this era of mobile credit card readers I think every vendor takes credit cards, but there are still cash discounts in some places, notably at the Auction/Auction Store
  • No (gaming) books: You would either carry them around with you everywhere and hate the extra weight or leave them in your hotel and then why did you bring them?
  • Chargers/battoriieez (phone, tablet, laptop, slapchop)
  • "Googies," Mom's aphasiac word for "snacks to eat on the go"
  • Hand sanitizer FOR EMERGENCIES
  • Notepads(tm) (hey, I take notes on my phone too, but sometimes paper comes up in gaming)
  • Pens/pencils/pincels
  • Black AND Silver(!) Sharpies for autographs on light or dark surfaces(!!!)
  • YOUR MEDICINE/PAINKILLERS/BANDAGES/INSULIN/TESTOSTERONE/GOLD-PRESSED LATINUM
  • Probably some insoles or gel inserts or foam blocks to walk on or whatever
  • Collapsible/lightweight water bottle with flavored beverage pouches
  • Splenda, mayonnaise, and hot sauce packets: The Condiment Trifecta

You might want to consider eating (vaguely listed by distance, and not listing places not specifically recommended by Goons in previous years)
  • The Food Trucks on Georgia Street Are Closest I Guess!
  • Fat Rooster Diner in the Hyatt has an astoundingly good and cheap (and seemingly under-the-radar) lunch buffet, including a cooked-to-order pasta man, and though they told us in 2018 they were doing a reduced menu in 2019 it was barely any different
  • The Ram (brewpub with gamer-themed menu, though always too full and not nearly as unique an experience as it was in like 2003)
  • Ruth's Chris Steakhouse is great, though Lawen would kill me if I did not mention St. Elmo Steakhouse in the same breath as it is the Indianapolis Tradition
  • And speaking of St. Elmo, Harry & Izzy's, as Mudcrab Merchant points out, is basically the food from St. Elmo's (next door) but at a fraction of the price, and was probably my favorite Gen-Con eating spot UNTIL
  • Sugarfire Smokehouse opened up, because AHHHHHHHHHHHH I WANT TO EAT IT ALL THE TIME EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD AND YOU CAN GET A SHAKE WITH A WHOLE PIE SLICE BLENDED IN
  • Not sure how I forgot to add Loughmiller's Pub in the original version of this post, given that Backno has been a tireless advocate of its goodness, closeness, and emptiness-considering-proximityness over the years.
  • Patachou (closes at like 3 P.M., but legitimately amazing quality breakfast/lunch)
  • STEAK 'N' SHAKE BECAUSE I AM FROM NORMAL, ILLINOIS AND I WILL BE PROUD OF OUR HOMETOWN CREATION UNTIL THE DAY I DIE
  • CellBlock cannot recommmend Primanti Bros. enough; a deli where their thing is putting all the sides on the sandwich instead of on ... the side.
  • Conan the Librarian says Pearings Cafe has the best breakfast crepes and coffee!
  • The Eiteljorg Museum's café, Reynold's choice for good southwestern-style food and craft beer, and never crowded (museum admission not required)
  • Fogo de Chão, literally the most overwhelming culinary experience you can probably get in the area (Brazilian steakhouse, kinda pronounced "Fogo zhe Shown" by the way). Also guaranteed to make you feel 100% like an elitist rear end in a top hat when you see the other clientele
  • Punch Bowl Social, highly recommended by Lawen and Dr. Gargunza
  • Slippery Noodle, Maigius' recommendation for a local hangout with heckin' chonkersize portions of food and just far enough away to not be crowded I think
  • Maxine's Chicken and Waffles comes recommended by Elephant Ambush as the best breakfast in Indianapolis.
  • Milktooth, suggested by DJFooBoo as the "head chef is a James Beard award winner who focuses on breakfast/brunch. Holy poo poo you should eat there dumbass!"
  • Kuma's Corner; TheIronJef reminded us last year that its burgers may actually be good enough to justify the trip
  • The Rathskeller has excellent German food and ??beer?? and is both ironically the farthest-away place and also the most likely for people reading this list to visit, as it is the home of our kickoff gathering SHOTS WEDNESDAY

You might want to consider considering:
  • Some sort of catchy numeric rule reminding you to sleep, eat, and shower. "5/3/1" is common, referring to hours, meals, and showers respectively, and some literal buffoons promote 3/2/1, but just try to find someone sleeping 3 hours a night at a convention who is not dead on his (yes always his) feet by halfway through and quite certainly getting basically no enjoyment out of those couple extra hours a day
  • Walking more in your everyday life. This will either sound obvious to you as you have been to a convention before or will make you say "why?" if you have not. My first Gen-Con, I basically wanted to stop walking forever by Sunday as my feet hurt aplenty; by the time I went back I had held a job where I walked 7-8 miles a day and my feet hurt precisely not at all by Sunday. Though that may be a bit extreme.
  • Bringing """layers""" if you are at all prone to being cold in air-conditioned environments! I have literally never once wished I had extra clothing at Gen-Con, but I am also literally a frost giant. It certainly does get colder in the convention center in the evenings once the crush of humanity has departed.

SPECIFIC AUCTION SECTION

This is kind of My Thing, since I have been an obsessive superfan of the Auction for about 15 years and an auctioneer for about half as long, so I might as well try to hype people up as usual (particularly because the Auction is very overlooked for a huge convention-long event right across from the Exhibit Hall)

Everyone wishes the schedule were available before the show started, but in lieu of that ever being possible, please enjoy and absorb previous years' schedules to get a sense of when things generally happen

People ask what kinds of things are sold at the Auction...well, in 2018 a madman made a database where you can investigate the question for yourself (the main issue I see immediately is that Charity items must not be included, considering a set of meteorite dice went for like $6,000 in 2018): https://public.tableau.com/profile/robertleeanderson#!/vizhome/GenConAuctionAnalysis/Dashboard

This is the Auction online pre-registration form if you want to get ready to fill it out months ahead of time

Finally, I will link a random YouTube playlist I made of really, really not that interesting Gen-Con related clips; it helps that most of them are from the days before my camera, be it a phone or a camera, could take more than 15-second-long video. It does have a clip of the Exhibit Hall being quiet for the Gary Gygax memorial minute, some Gygax Memorial Auction segments, and Auctioneer Josh selling the infamous "box of VHS tape porn" though, so it is not all bad.

It is adorable looking back to posts in 2013 hoping to get some kind of planned Goon Meet going, as opposed to our like constant five days of Goon Meets by 2015.

I REALIZE I HAVE BARELY TALKED ABOUT EVENTS. Here is the thing: Other than Gen Con 50 and its panoply of legendary panels, I realized like a decade ago that events are just simply not something I want to spend time doing at Gen-Con, as there is too much else going on. But I finally realized this year that I never talk about this HUGE PART OF THE CONVENTION in these posts, so here at least is YA GIRL NELLY, SMASH THAT LIKE BUTTON with an amazing video walking you through the whole process:

Rather than pretending I am reserving the third post for anything, I will just make it a random post, ensuring that I will suddenly wish I had reserved another post.

After repeatedly seeing this thread-famous comic in examining the old threads...

...I wondered if he actually did any other Gen Con comics, and actually found three others. One was not even tagged as "Gen Con" in his tagging system, so you are looking at some real deep cuts here. And uh... yeah you can see why the bathroom one is the one that got traction, but still these are important to your Gen-Conification

Actually though if you feel like wearing that outfit you really should go for it

Anyway I am going to occasionally just post random Gen-Con pictures going forward rather than adding another 100 to these posts. Though here have some more

thanks for that second one Google auto-Photos

Like every year, I am surely forgetting to talk about some huge segment of what Gen-Con is. Which, again, see the first points of the first post, further highlights how Gen-Con is THE BIGGEST AND BEST THING. But part of why I am so dedicated to actually getting this posted over a month before registration begins is so I can actually fix these oversights ahead of time rather than being like "hey everybody here is the thread, so uh registration was last week, sorry"

Excellent first posts as always, Quarex.

Going to use this one to both promote the Gen Con Programs project and as a reminder to myself to try and find some time at work to update it. I haven't had a chance to do more with it since the 50th, but I need to talk to Gen Con to get more data and do some research stuff with it.

On this site, you can look at all of the events from the first 50 Gen Cons so you can get a good idea of what people do there. It also has some oral histories I conducted with people from various parts of Gen Con's existence, and a little bit of baby research I did just to show what you can do with the data there:

http://best50yearsingaming.com/

I'm going to plug one exhibit in particular that examined the change in how many women were running events at Gen Con. It's getting better, but we can do better still!

Loughmiller's let me down hard GC2019. We went there Friday or Saturday night (I forget which) for food with my booth staff to unwind after a long day of slinging bees, and not only did it take forever to get a seat (people just wouldn't leave even though they were done eating and not gaming) but once we did sit down they almost immediately started a live band that was waaaay too loud. The waitress sucked too, but she may have just been having a bad day. I dunno, I'll try them again but I know my booth staff have sworn them off for good.

That's fair. I think they suffer from being a small staff mostly focused on lunches for the Indiana government employees that are across the street. Then here come this event that makes em a bunch of cash. Try again during lunch time and see if you get a better experience.

I went to the auction for the first time last year and boy was it fun and had a lot of good deals. Ran like a well oiled machine as well and I got to watch the auctioneer verbally dismantle someone trying to bid by shouting out their number instead of showing their placard. I can't believe this is the first time you've ever mentioned the auction, Quarex.

Some personal suggestions!

-A backpack is much better IF you're not buying a ton of things and filling it so full that you're hitting people when turning, like Quarex said. I have a smaller one that fits everything I need just fine without being a nuisance.

-Call your bank if you do decide to buy stuff at the vendor hall with a card. You WILL get flagged and declined then need to call your bank three times so they know that your card isn't stolen. Ask me about last year! This happens because the vendors themselves are based out of whatever country/state and the bank just sees your card getting charged in two different parts of the world at once.

-There is a "quiet room" somewhere in the ICC, usually in a place far off from the hustle and bustle. If you're having a hard time with anxiety or similar, you can go there and relax. Low lights and silence. There are also donated toiletries and snacks if you need something. I forgot to put on deodarent one day so I popped over and grabbed a little travel size one because I'm not disgusting. They accept cash donations and also replacement items.

-The arcade loving sucks, don't give them any money.

-For your tickets and badges, Will Call is better depending on when you arrive. My first year we got there Thursday morning and it was five minutes long. The previous two years (this year we had them mailed) we got there Wednesday and the line was at least 45 minutes, even sometime after midnight. I now prefer getting everything mailed and checking every thirty seconds before leaving to make sure we have the tickets. If you forget them YOU ARE hosed unless someone can get into your house and overnight them.

-If it's your first time, don't go hog wild on events. I felt so lost the first year even with friends to guide me. Buy yourself some generic tickets to slide into random stuff, and maybe schedule a couple things if you like them. I highly recommend anything One Shot does, even System Mastery. If you're lucky, Jim McClure will use your water bottle for a wrestling themed bit and after that you're basically famous.

-The connected hotels and the ICC have water dispensers so keep your bottles full instead of just buying new ones.

-If someone offers you Malort and you're not a teetotaller, take the drink. Ignore what anyone says beforehand.

Yeah it is always advisable to carry your bidder card on you at all times, though do not be like me and then have it fall out of your back pocket immediately and have to replace it. Uh, I think I did that twice before I realized maybe my back pocket was not a safe place to store it

Someday I will remember to mention the Auction

Some of the most entertaining moments at the Auction proper are when a bidder goes rogue, for sure. But if you are the least bit interested in finding out-of-print/uncommon/older gaming and gaming-adjacent things, the Auction really is the place to be. Also in theory I am working both T.O.V.A. and the Charity Auction this year, but you know, things change!

Also the prevailing theory on Will Call is that when the lines are long, you should do Will Call the next year, as people will be fed up with the lines and have the badges shipped to them. I believe I heard they were a bit long last year, so clearly you can do Will Call for 2020!

Generic Tickets are a great idea certainly, though interestingly they are going away once every event is e-ticketed in a few years. Though I still imagine this will instantly drop the average age of someone running a game by like 15 years, for better or worse.

But yeah, overscheduling can always be a problem, and for some people underscheduling is just as big a problem. Nobody enjoys feeling like they are constantly running from one event from the other and never getting a chance to engage in all the nebulous floating fun going on all around them, and certainly there are people who feel completely disconnected from the fun if they do not have some structure to their day. Then there are

Maybe spruce up the Wi-Fi a bit at the ICC.

My favorite thing of GenCon (Besides food trucks. And goons. Whatever, shut up, just listen.) is Indie Games On Demand. You can find out more about 'em here but the short explanation is that they're in the Hyatt, they run about every two hours or so, and you just need generics. Show up, get a boarding pass, wait a little while and then pick your game!

Hi, Forums Poster Carteret here to recommend you get your badge and tickets mailed to you if you are at all a functioning adult. Your time is worth more than the minimal fee you pay in postage. Put your poo poo in your suitcase the day it arrives. Get your life together. Don't forget the most important thing you need at the convention besides your wallet (ZachAttack).

I think after that lawsuit over them intentionally blocking wireless signals or whatever that the wireless situation is definitely improved. Or something. I barely remember where I am

And I am certainly torn, because generic tickets are adorably 1970s (or whenever they started) but it is hard to argue with how much more efficient a system e-tickets represent. It would be even more efficient if we all just used our VR headsets to play together instead of going to Gen-Con though, I mean, think about it

These three quotes actually kind of cover my own thoughts about Gen-Con on basically any given day.

There is probably a time I do not think about Gen-Con much if at all, but it is seriously limited to like "the period after I book my room for the next year in August and before I start thinking about posting the thread for the next year in September"

Fellis' point about Stockholm Syndrome notwithstanding, if you are going to wait in line at Will Call the preferred way to do it is definitely to be impaired in one fashion or another; I preferred "just being so tired everything was hilarious" myself the last time I actually was in charge of my own badge instead of having someone hand me one clandestinely in the Auction room.

I spent probably too much time my first gencon just going around the game library and taking pictures of silly box covers of old board games.

Not entirely sure there is a wrong way to spend your Gen Con other than not being at Gen Con, honestly.

Quarex, something to add to one of your first 3 posts maybe are Nellie's videos of her experiences at the past like 8 Gen Cons?

Agreed, and I actually am now mystified that I have not spent more time doing what M a x did, considering the joy I have gotten (obviously) from terrible or at least disturbingly memorable board game boxes. I used to just bid on them if I found them hilarious, but that led to me staring at a pile of games like "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" and "Beat the Devil: The Christian Game of Christian Game Christgames for Christian Gamerchrists" or something when I had to move by myself once and thinking "as someone who never plays board games, maybe I should stop buying them"

What, just because I love Nelly like I love David the Gnome, you think I should feature her? Oh, yeah, actually, good point

Maybe I will put her 2014 and 2019 wrap day videos for contrast, considering in 2014 she was like CANNOT WAIT TO GO DO IT AGAIN BETTER and 2019 was like WELP ALL IS LOST

This is only the second time I have had this happen to me, and a touch less angry than the first time (I do not remember the context beyond me telling someone in like 2005 that something was not funny, but the avatar was a dumb picture and the text was like "IS THIS ONE FUNNY DIPSHIT" and I remember almost keeping it since the comma splice made it sound like the avatar was questioning if I were a funny dipshit)

Needless to say this one clearly gets to stay

I've lived in Indiana all my life and I've never been to Gen Con.

Unfortunately I grew up in rural bumfuck Indiana where there aren't a lot of nerds of any stripe -unless you consider redneck potheads to be nerds- so that is probably why.

I'm definitely going to the next one though.

Gary con has a hotel debacle this year that may top Gen Cons. The main hotel where the convention is sold out on minutes last march. Yesterday, for a mystery reason, they started sending people emails that they were being booted to another hotel 1.5 miles away. Supposedly this was for some error the hotel didnt notice for about 20 minutes, but people that booked seconds after the block opened are reporting getting the boot. Its indisciminent, vendors, people with accessibility issues, the people that run miniature games with Tupperware upon Tupperware of figures and terrain. Hundreds have posted on facebook complaining about it and to top it off the hotel is not apologizing in any way and generally being dicks about it. Gary con is less than 3 months away.

Edit: also if you dont confirm the new or old booking by 12/30 they will cancel everything on you. This is all in an email that is going to spam for many people.
