the last jedi owns for having the general message of "let the past go" while also having a character, played by a CGI version of a deceased actor, die and then come back via magic in the course of 30 seconds

lol honestly idg how in the world anyone likes RotJ. It's basically every criticism of the sequels but with even more egregious toy marketing and plot retreads.

My favorite part of ep6 is when they took a fan favorite bounty Hunter and killed him off with a three stooges ladder gag

rotj's ending is okay because the cast is likable enough that you do want them to turn out alright, but holy poo poo why waste all that time on the teddy bear planet

its a case where johnson made his movie and the studio made their movie and a team of overworked editors then had to weld them together into one incoherent mess

boba wasn’t a fan favorite when the movie came out. or least nobody really cared back then.

rotj is the final emotional climax to the Luke/Vader arc and it’s masterfully done albeit dragging in places.

Palpatine is a real fucker and the reveal he’s an OP space wizard is fantastic. the space battle that goes with it is super rad too, when the rebel fleet realizes they hosed up big time is another classic moment

you can tell by the clear contradiction in themes. kylo ren, luke, rey etc. their whole story is about killing the past, reckoning with why it was a failure and moving past and then... no, kylo takes control of the first order and we get more empire vs. rebels poo poo, AGAIN. they needed 10 kinds of stormtrooper figures for the next movie and that's all that matters

and then, in the most useless rump of the film, two characters are like "yo what if all these star wars are just making a small group of people filthy rich while the common folk get crushed again and again by factions that don't actually stand for anything?" and they silo that off and shove it way down so you can't see it to the point that apparently in the new one rose tico might as well not exist

From the beginning to the end, the only thing that changes is a bunch of #Resistance members die. Nobody grows or changes. Rey is in the exact same spot at the end as she was at the beginning. Nobody goes through an arc, and any threat of character development is precluded by the fact there has to be a sequel.

Rian Johnson isn't wrong to say that the movies need to "challenge" fans, but Last Jedi isn't challenging anyone. All of its interesting ideas end up being dropped to restore status quo ante. The most challenging thing about it is having to endure the runtime.

if they followed that to its logical conclusion then they'd bomb Canto Bight from orbit and shoot down every space yacht that tries to escape.

You could do an adaptation of Baader-Meinhof Complex where the Star Wars RAF is targeting weapons industry moguls.

Come to think of it, Star Wars is a perfect setting to do a sci fi take on The Battle of Algiers. Not that it would ever be made.

My hot take is that Lynch Dune is really bad. Like its got some very good visuals and when Lynch gets go be weird its good, but its an incoherent mess if you haven't read the books and if you have it completely fucks up the story
