always way too much star wars chat itt but honestly star wars isn't particularly hard to understand, it's just sword and sorcery but in space with lasers mixed with spaghetti westerns and kurosawa samurai films

all you need to make a good star wars movie is compelling heroes, compelling villains and a compelling conflict that sets them against each other yet the amount to which people can bungle this is quite comical

my dream Star Wars show is just a chanbara series but with lightsabers. yes I know Mandalorian is emulating Kurosawa, but chanbara without swordfights is just a western.

the main reason the Jedi have sucked since the prequels is because their fights are all over-choreographed

disney has figured out that they can play both sides of the dumb star war discourse

"yeah the last jedi was bad so we're undoing everything and doubling down on self-referential call backs and meta humour" and "actually if you dislike the last jedi, you're sexist/racist/homophobic"

Struggle Session has put it the best: the one thing in the world (the disney PR dept.) that tells them (the fans) what to think, has contradicted itself with conflicting PR rollouts for both films

Those might not work for a Star Wars campaign but you should watch them anyway.

Try looking for something that's not Kurosawa because that's a higher chance of your players not being familiar with the plot.

The Blind Swordsman Zatoichi is pretty good and has great situations for a blind character.

13 Assassins came out in 2010 and it's about getting revenge on an evil lord who likes murdering peasants for fun.

Sword of Doom is about a sociopathic samurai who wanders around killing anyone he pleases, and you could easily spin that into a bounty hunting thing where the players are trying to track him down by following the wake of his murder spree.

Samurai Assassin is set after Japan is forcibly opened by the United States and all of the turmoil that goes on among samurai over Japan's future. You could spin that into something about an isolated culture being forced into trade with the Empire and then focus on their internal politics if you want to be ambitious.

I fuckin loved this one

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harakiri_(1962_film)

it's about the post-sengoku peace where lots of samurai were left without any actual fighting to do and were thus forced to become roaming beggars, which is a pretty common samurai film trope. what makes harikari unique is that it's about something at least I had never heard about before, a sort of coercive thing where samurai would show up at a clan's home and ask them for space to commit ritual suicide because of their poverty and purposelessness. this had the effect of basically forcing the lord of that castle / clan to give them alms and shoo them on their way to save face

the movie is essentially about a particularly stern lord who gets fed up with being hassled for rice and coinage and calls a wandering samurai's bluff. it's a fuckin great, tense drama with a couple really brutal scenes but no gratuitous violence at all.

it's on that film service Kanopy that many local libraries have access to, i can't recommend it strongly enough

It’s kinda cool if you aren’t paying much attention. Choreography and editing on it are a poo poo show and you could almost forgive it for that because it’s cool that Rey and Kylo are fighting together but as soon as it’s done all the cool character stuff between them gets chucked out the airlock.

i've seen people claim that rey was supposed to get stabbed in the first cut and the editting weirdness is caused by changing that

i have no idea what the evidence for that is. maybe just fevered imaginings.

why do people try to defend The Last Jedi because of its “themes” or ideas? whatever ‘ideas’ it has are stupid Hillaryman poo poo or generic lib poo poo that it constantly contradicts itself on. The “commentary on Star Wars” stuff is boring wankery. Anything even vaguely progressive that it mawkishly half says is inherently bullshit coming from Disney.

it’s only real value is that it’s saying something about the franchise itself and that’s frankly worthless navel gazing.

It shows a little promise at times but consistently shits all over itself any time it could be vaguely interesting. It’s ambitious in a sense, but it’s like a child’s idea of what would be ambitious and it never commits to anything it’s saying or doing. To me that makes it even more of a bummer waste than TFA, which was also doing commentary on the franchise but at least it knew it was hollow.

BreadTube is swine and for people too stupid for even podcasts I swear to god.

The Casino planet scene was irking me for some reason last night. Like sure it has some neat ideas, the stuff about the war profiteering and parallels with Disney are interesting but nothing comes of it, thread dropped, and the film ultimately sides with “Yes actually War and Star Wars good don’t think about it” and it really gets my space-goat that people seem to think that’s somehow presented as a valid critique.
