Just looking at it 3-5 are definitely on mine too. That Alex G album was almost definitely my indie AOTY

i like best coast to a degree cause she had a really rivers cuomo-y sense of melody on the first album and the fade away ep but yeah the aesthetic is pretty lame

honestly Betheny is doing the full Rivers Cuomo, career wise. Start off strong, keep making stuff that isn't as good and just enjoying being famous. I'm aware that Crazy for You isn't quite Pinkerton but man i love that album so much and everything since has been shades of that album but not quite as good.

Tried to keep my 10 songs to stuff that I didn't see many mentions about (except for maybe Hatchie), so I chose two songs from each of my five favourite indie albums this year.

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4YaeqySeMFbmQE55o5l0yc?si=Mw4DmhPwQ7OYh44AItm1tg

Probably would've also put in James Blake, White Lies, Tove Lo, Foals and Bag Raiders as the other five for my actual top ten albums this year.

I see some similar artists in my list and some others that I visited this year. Sniffers, Cherry Glazerr, Taco Cat, Sunflower Bean, and Potty Mouth were in my rotation too. I think we have similar tastes.

I probably have a few 2018's in there, it was just things I discovered this year and that were in heavy rotation.

Bled Fest had a huge influence on me this year and I still think about how it's done forever and it bums me out a lot.

Here is my personal faves of 2019 playlist! https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6sfZUjyndF7M2piaL48Tf6

I have a few rules for mine and really enjoy making this every year:
-25 songs
-1 per artist
-Single or album must have come out this year
-Can't re-use songs from last year if single/album year differs

Honourable mention of this year for me goes to this amazing Dutch singer/songwriter:

Their last couple albums were very forgettable so I'm not too surprised. They probably slowly leaked crowd sizes down from a couple thousand at each show to a couple hundred and decided to throw in the towel.

Or you know, can't stand each other anymore.

I loved a couple of their albums though, rip until their new projects don't take off and they have a reunion in 5-10 years.

Yeasayer's "ONE" was the first song I really loved from this decade. Although, now I am not sure if that came before "Good Intentions Paving Co."

edit: looks like they were roughly a month apart, with Newsom's being released first.

Adding to the year end lists, this is my top ten. cheated a bit by including an artist and then a remix they did of another artist, oh well. fairly eclectic mix but its all songs are good to dance to and you probably know most of them. I tried to make the transitions work as well as possible with the ordering without just grouping by genre, it probably could be better still though. (also cheated by having 11 songs)

I wish they played SLAVES OF FEAR in their set, but the show was a lot of fun. Can't go wrong with lots of strobe lights and people moshing up front.

Daughters was good too, though I thought the lead singer was too sleazy for my taste. I read on a different forum that the dude allegedly used to gently caress a lot of underage girls in the Providence scene when the band just started out, and it shows.

Haven't done a full top ten playlist yet, but I did do a one-song-from-my-ten-favourite-New-Zealand-albums playlist, which I'm pretty pleased with. Since it's only songs from albums or EPs, it's missing Finn Johansson and French For Rabbits, but I reckon they'll both be dropping a new EP (at least) next year, so that's okay.

Hobo Johnson is cringy beyond belief so I'm with you there but most of the obvious touchstones for Black Midi are bands from the 70s-90s. This Heat, Talking Heads, Slint...

It's been two weeks, which means time for some self promotion. I just put out the 9th installment of my show Iliktronik. Lots of really good music from the middle east and north africa region with several from Kuwait specifically. I had NO idea there was such a vibrant music scene there. Lots of cool synthy/indie/psychedelic rock and stuff coming out of that area.

Saw the the back-to-back Cherry Glazerr/Charly Bliss shows offer the weekend. CB opened for CG on the first night and vice versa. They were predictably phenomenal. Cherry Glazerr was so so good, and Satsuma is an amazing guitarist. I don't remember how many times I've seen Charly Bliss but seeing them on back-to-back nights was a goddamn privilege. Weirdly, neither band had any shows for a while before or after. And they randomly come to Chicago for sequential shows? They read my goddamn brain.

Also, opener Girl K was great.

I am extremely jealous of this. I saw them both separately this year and enjoyed them heavily. I wanted to make the drive for that double header, but couldn't make it. CB will probably blow up next year and it's no more fun small venues.
