Can we talk about these movies being sexist with their violence towards women? They put captain plasma in the garbage compacter to be crushed to death and then when she lived, the main characters blew up her ship in the second movie.

Lucas did create that balance at the end of the PT by having two Jedi, two Sith, and two force babies that could do whatever, but Clone Wars leaving so many surviving light and dark siders muddles that reading a lot.

I agree. But I think you can hand-waive away the issue of all existing force wielders with what Luke said in TLJ: the force doesn't belong to any of them, and at the same time anyone is capable of "manipulating" or experiencing/feeling the power of the force (it being implied Finn is force sensitive in TROS suggests this). The force alone dictates where the dark and light power resides, not the individuals. Definitely muddy explanation, but it kinda works? Lol.

The nature and concept of the force has canonically been altered in the Clone Wars series. The concept of the Mortis gods explains the idea of the force being balanced through "The Ones" — a family of ancient and worshipped force wielders who represented the 3 aspects of the force: the son who represented darkness, the daughter representing the light, and the father who balances the two. This is where the idea of that the light and dark must coexist in equal power in order for there to be balance comes from. Anakin destroying the emperor and himself was essentially his refusal to take up the role of the father, throwing the force balance out of whack that likely lead to the rise of darkness in Ben.

Canon isn't real. What "balance of the Force" means in the movies is perfectly clear, regardless of what you read in some comic book or whatever that says that actually it's video game logic.

I think one of the criticisms about TLJ that frustrates me is the weird assumption of having nowhere to go after that movie or that it didnt set anything up. I feel like it left great little small blueprint for a 3rd film that if approached with a shred of imagination and creativity could have been very interesting.

Off the top of my head whenever I think about what this could have been picking up after TLJ its:

Kylo is Supreme Leader and ruling the FO and the Galaxy. Hed probably be struggling, having some issues finally being in charge and what exactly that entails. Maybe he sucks at it? Maybe hes losing grasp of the New Empire Snoke had started or hes doubling down on the brutality and ruling with a desperate but iron fist. His conflict with himself is reflected in his inability to effectively manage his Empire and hes internally doubting himself. He is now the last remnant of vast legacy of ultimate badass bad guys and its a lot to live up to AND Rey is still alive It creates an interesting internal and external conflict you could write a ton of poo poo around.

On Reys front, she and the very very small resistance left over are slowly or maybe over a time gap have begun to rebuild the Rebellion. Maybe shes training a few new Jedi, kids like broom boy, etc with the sacred books she tool or shes studying herself. But she still believes Kylo can turn and thats her big driving factor. Meanwhile Poe and Leah and crew are out there dodging the FO to build a new rebellion, turning systems, gaining new allies. This is space fantasy. Do some GoT and get into the minor politics of uniting a bunch of disperate factions into a rebellion. Woulda been a cool way to explore other planets, add maybe a few new characters, etc. Maybe Rey is also being hunted by the Knights of Ren. If you want cool lightsaber fights her dispatching them could be a dope fight that eventually leads to her confronting Kylo.

The main conflict could easily revolve around the Rebels struggling to amass an army because everyones terrified of Kylos brutal FO Kylo struggling to rule. Rey struggling with the urge to try and turn Ben again and how it could put everything Luke left her with at risk. Intersperse all of this with big battles involving the FO chasing down and trying to squash the rebellion before it rises up. Mini skirmishes, taking out a SD or two and that helps turn some systems, etc. E

The big threat being not some loving weapon or Palpatine or whatever but an actual 3 dimensional villain with a proper motivation and background thats been set up by the previous two films.

Have Rey turn him in some situation where maybe Hux is planning a coup and does and has some secret plan or whatever thats gunna be Real Bad and Kylo turns and like sabtoages the entire FO or self destructs some poo poo. There, redemption complete.

This is messy and sort of vague but if I can come up with even a base idea for SOMETHING while taking a dump, Disney and their vast amount of resources could have too if they had the balls.

What was the point of making a new lightsaber? Why do two blue blades equal an orange blade? Didn't Anakin/Luke's saber get destroyed in TLJ?

At first when burying the sabers I thought the movie might approach having a point or a statement by going, "maybe constantly training for war is loving up Jedis' thought processes," but of course Rey just makes a new one and commits to nothing. Also, why is she burying Leia's saber there when Leia has no attachment to the homestead. Also also, what was the loving point of retrieving Leia's saber in the first place?

I loving hate this movie.

i like the idea of ol sheev wandering into kylo's throne room and force blasting everyone until he's got his throne back and then just dunking on kylo... problem is, 'old guy dunks on kylo' was done by snoke. which makes it even funnier that the stupid kylo ren comic portrays snoke as this kindly weird grandfather figure. had these films been actually planned, you could've had snoke be that sort of figure - whom kylo kills anyway. then, you could have him confronted by someone far worse.

If you choose not to engage with any Star Wars media outside of the films, that's cool. I love Rebels and the Clone Wars series, and am offering up an informed perspective of what the force being in balance means based on the stories both of those shows have told. You really can't argue that my reading of what "balance of the force" means is invalid just because I like other Star Wars related media. I mean, you could, but that'd be lame.

Be kind of dumb if it was.

Originally, Lucas wanted Darth Maul's double bladed lightsaber to be have the "standard" lightsaber handle, so when the second blade was revealed to the audience, it would be a surprise. But Ray Park showed him that he could do so much more with it if the handle was extended. Lucas agreed, which is why Maul had the extended handle.

So if Rey's is supposed to be a double bladed, she ain't going to be able to do much with it.

I forget, but didn't they make a big deal about Exogol's environment being like too rough/intense for them star destroys to properly lift off or something? That was the whole deal with the navigational tower right? There was some other dialogue about the shields too I thought. The big death star cannons being inept was explained that if the fighters engage close enough to each SD, the gently caress off cannons are basically useless because they might blast one another or something.

Wow, after losing TWO Death Stars, you'd think ol' Sheev would have thought around that problem. (Remember Vader in ANH: "We have to face them ship to ship", because the x-wings were too close for their cannons)

Star Wars is in a weird place because two similar and popular mediums (film and TV) keep crossing back over. The shows arent really different than Clone Wars movie or Rogue One or Solo in anything except being shorter (and that's not really true with Clone Wars as it is purposely set up in 3 or 4 episode movie length arcs), so it's harder to remove them from thought about the movies, unlike relatively obscure books and comics that hardly anyone read.
