It’s that time of year again, where TVIV’s ever dwindling user base, gather together to rank the year in TV. After years of awesome work by Toxx and most recently, Rarity this year’s thread will be helmed for the first time by yours truly, They are big shoes to fill, but I’ll try my best. Let’s review the rules. New Deadline is 12:01AM on Sat 5th of Jan PSTVOTING RULES1. Every show you pick must have had a first time airing in its country of origin in full or in part during 2019. This could be a network show, a cable show, an online show, a TV movie, it could even be a Youtube thing if you're down with what the kids are calling 'it'. 2. The joy of this thread is in getting to shout about your favourites and hear about the hidden gems that you missed and we can only do that if you talk about why you've chosen the shows you have. You can write a sentence, you can write an essay, whatever you like as long as you write something. Any lists posted without reasons for their picks will not be counted in the final vote. 3. If you want to list more than ten shows go for it but I'll only count your top ten. If you want to list less than ten shows then go for that too but I won't count it at all. If you don't want to rank your picks then that's fine as well but again, I won't count it. 4. Don't be a dick about other people's choices. This is a positive thread to celebrate the best of TV, not a place for people to get lost in an argument over which genre show in its third season poo poo the bed worst. If you want to be critical then take it elsewhere. 5. If you want to talk about spoilers in your post then by all means go for it but put a spoiler warning at the start of your list. 6. 99% sure, i'll format this later, no promises 1: The Expanse Fav show of all time, fav book series of all time. Fav thing to watch youtube reactions for.           2: Watchmen Needs no introduction or explanation. One of the best episodes of TV all year and it's was about as western tropey as it gets, so eat a dick.   6: Russian Doll I got nothing, just perfection from start to finish  7: Kingdom Best feudal Korean Zombie show on the market. Gorgeous costumes, looks like there was no expense spared.  8: Mr Inbetween Aussie show kicking way way above it's weight class. Deserves every nice thing said about it. Do you mean that the current season had to have been premiered in 2019 or that the list is literally only new shows this year? I feel like shows that are currently airing should be in the mix... For example, as I understand the rules right now: Chernobyl = Eligible Disenchantment Season 2 = Ineligible Or are they both fair game?

Hi Folks, It's Jordan, have not ever done one of these, but it is one of my favorite things about year ends, talking about the big TV events of the year, and all the interesting stuff that happened, but I don't really want to come up with huge suggestions or explain everything, because, well, I mostly watch Non-Fiction, Documentary, and Game Shows of course, for me to explain the significance of certain television shows in my wheelhouse, would be a bit absurd to put in the list, so what I decided to do is break this into two parts the "Honorable Mentions" (Game Shows + More) and then the "Top 10" list to count towards this list. I'll keep my Honorable Mentions into just FIVE game shows and/or documentary shows that I found very enjoyable, that I think deserve praise, rather it was new, or debuted last year or something in between. HONORABLE MENTIONS The Circle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Op2uKuy61I In the world of "Survivor" and "Big Brother", not a ton of talk happens to UK Formats, as Netflix has a deal to do "The Circle" internationally, I should hype up "The Circle", with Season 1 in the UK, somebody who played as their girlfriend won the show, but with "Season 2", they amped it up With Emma Willis as the presenter, and tried their best to get more "catfishing" on the show - but the two stand-outs of the show was Tim, a Robin Williams who loved his cat, and Paddy, an advocate for gay rights and disabilities, who went into the show not explaining his disability (to see what it was like to not feel judged) and it was such an emotional moment, that I really enjoyed for what amounts to "Wow, Social Media is Terrible" (Also, what is it gonna take to get Only Connect to America?) The Masked Singer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmd7XFd6AMg The Masked Singer, was a throwback to game shows like "Masquerade Party" while still having this amazing gimmick that people who see through the costume and "who sung it" would understand - grammy winning artists in a singing competition against actors and athletes on a relatively level playing field. Just like how "The Voice" is all about the singing and not the looks, "The Masked Singer" did a great job at making a quirky fun singing show, into an amazing game. Press Your Luck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ9H0pTxAx4 Press Your Luck returned with Elizabeth Banks as the host, and the return of "The Whammy", while we live in the post-Deal or No Deal world and shows like "Spin The Wheel" throwing millions for nothing are out there - Press Your Luck went a little back to basics, but continued the high stakes gambles and added some very outrageous prizes out there - SpaghettiOs for Life! The Imagineering Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y7TlaXDPrg A Documentary about Walt Disney Imagineering, with Iwerks involved, a fantastic look at the generations and decades that made Disneyland the go-to theme park, and that juggling act of business, science and creativity that becomes a major part of Disney. While seemingly an "infomercial", it also digs deeper into some of the biggest issues with the park. The Toys That Made Us https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rS1jLCF5LY One of my favorite shows to watch on Netflix because "Nailed It", it might be 60-minute mini documentaries about the creation of different toy companies, the cartoons that go into them, and much more, but I somehow always gravitate towards them and feel it's worth a binge watch. You won't regret it. Plus, we are all nerds here, let's face it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTsW30Ur0sg The TOP 10 Television Shows of 2019 10) Black Mirror I am one of the biggest supporters of Charlie Brooker, but this series was mostly, "Huh", with the exception of "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" as they try and diverge the series from being "What if phones, but too much" and still riding that San Junipero wave. 9) The Twilight Zone While I still love modern Black Mirror over the Jordan Peele "Twilight Zone", the debut season of the show was a great re-introduction to the anthology series, my favorite episode was the meta-commentary episode "Blurryman" that starts out as a normal Twilight Zone, but then evolves into a story about what storytelling is and isn't about. 8) The Boys There really isn't room on this list for superhero shows, Sorry Titans, I still can't figure out your group dynamic, Sorry Doom Patrol, I really love ya, but you'd be #11 if I had it, and Watchmen... well, it was a "remix", But for me, this year "The Boys" was the Anti-Superhero show we needed. It had the dark comedy, it had you question the morals of Starlight, and have an amazing story arc with her, and you of course had Billy Butcher being the "gray area" character that many other superhero shows fail to capture. 7) GLOW I will be honest, this season wasn't as good as the other ones, but I still found myself laughing at all the references to the weird world of professional wrestling that reminds me why I mostly post on "Rowdy Ringsports", the irrelevance and cultural appropriation is the mainline subject matter of the show, especially when it was regarding women, but with the big move this season, it made for an interesting landscape for the show, and still maintained true to what it was - a sitcom about pro wrestling. 6) Documentary Now I can't put any real documentaries on this list, but Documentary Now hits all the notes of a great satire, and is one of the rare "shows that felt like it was meant for me" - from the "Any Given Saturday Afternoon" episode parodying "A League of Ordinary Gentlemen" to it's "Dear Mr. Watterson" episode that was all about doing deep cuts about Gary Larson, it still is the show I will keep watching as long as they continue making it. I still want to see their attempt at a "Super Size Me" or a "20 Feet from Stardom" in this format, but I am glad it returned. 5) Barry I will be honest - I didn't like Bill Hader before Barry. I thought he was yet another SNL guy, I didn't care for his roles in any of his movies, and seeing the south park documentary "6 days to air" made me think of him a little less, i knew he was "a funny actor", but Barry gave me a shocking turn, much like seeing Bob Odenkirk doing Breaking Bad for the first time - the comedy guy, can do drama. While it's still a comedy in beats and premise, there isn't any winks or nods or anything that doesn't take away from the tone of the show. It really is a tragedy, and it's one that you feel bad every time a decision comes up, or something involving the theater. 4) Mr Robot I really hope people aren't sleeping on Mr Robot now that Rami Malek won for Bohemian Rhapsody, the anxiety continues for Elliot, as we see Dark Web, Social Media, and of course, Capitalism and Greedy Billionaires be the targets for another fsociety campaign. December 22nd is the SERIES finale, and it's a wonder if this will be one of the great dramas of the 2010s that will have a satisfying ending. 3)What We Do In The Shadows Matt Barry plays an over the top vampire and the best impersonator in the world, Mark Proksch plays an energy vampire who bores people to death, literally. Most television shows adapted from movies don't turn out so well, but What We Do In The Shadows was one of those surprising favorites that didn't really get the promotion and praise it did on social media and other "hype blogs" - Episode 7, "The Trial" had a laundry list of celebrity cameos and deep cuts such as Wesley Snipes denying being a vampire hunter. 2) I Think You Should Leave Sketch Comedy has been very, very, bad in recent years. Sometimes you get a "Robot Chicken" other times you get a "Frank TV", but I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson had some of the greatest sketches in not just this year, but this decade - from "Chunky" the Game Show, to the "Honk If You're Horny" guy, to the "Hot Dog" Robber, to of course, "Focus Group" (although I did love Tim Heidecker in the "Party Game" sketch talking about a legendary jazz musician from "The Colgate Comedy Hour") 1) Succession It became the meme of the internet, over who is "Daddy's Candy Baby", but Succession is the kind of show that could take up the mantle of "Next Dallas" that "Empire" dropped the ball with, as every one of the family members fights for the big seat at the company, while the comedy unravels as you see this company has their hands in so many media outlets, from children's books to theme park rides. Questioning what is Kendall gonna do next, or is Roman gonna screw them over, the same kind of discussion that would happen from Game of Thrones, but without any fear of a dragon chomping at them next episode. Season 1 was a silent favorite, but Season 2, as they grew the stakes made it one popular show. Personally, I love the soundtrack of the show and I love the way each scene serves to foreshadow something coming up either in that episode or two episodes over. TVIV list 10 doctor who Let's get this out of the way. it's great and i need more of it in my life. the new doctor was great, the companions were great, the writing was great, gently caress yall   9 watchmen i really enjoyed this dark gritty take on super heroes.   8 This time with alan partridge alan partridge is back and he's hosting a breakfast type current affirs show, and he's not very good at it.   7 umbrella academy i really enjoyed this dark gritty take on super heroes   6 black mirror this gets a spot purely for the miley cyrus pop versions of the nine inch nails songs.   5 the boys i really enjoyed this dark gritty take on super heroes   4 a series of unfortunate events i loved this series of books, i'm glad they managed to finish the series, doing better than the film did with only 3 books covered.   3 Joe Pera Talks to You i really enjoyed this light wholesome take on a super normal guy who just enjoys stuff and is excited to tell us all about it   2 Undone animated show where bob odenkirk is dead but he wants to find out who killed him so he recruits his daughter who can speak to ghosts and travel in time due to a recent car crash. some good twisty time stuff going on.   1 Chris Gethard Presents (Manhatten Neighborhood Network) i really enjoyed this dark gritty take on super heroes

It's been a crap year for TV, and I'm not totally sure I'll be able to fill out a list of 10 good shows. In some cases, a few outstanding performances couldn't rescue a show from its own incoherent premise (The Boys, Watchmen). Others failed to whip an exhausted concept back to life (Happy, Killing Eve, The Good Place, Veep, Broad City). The Mandalorian used approximately $1 billion to disguise a 'planet of the week' Stargate-like turd of a script. The only thing smugger than Succession's characters are its writers. I don't watch Game of Thrones, seems like porn for white libs to me. Maybe it deserves a place on the list for pissing off its most irritating fans with the surprise reveal that absolute monarchy has pitfalls. I haven't seen Fosse/Verdon, Black Mirror, or Fleabag yet, but I intend to at some point. Anyway. Here's the list. I tend to like these things for the same reasons as other people, so I won't do much justifying of these choices. 10. Infinity Train Infinity Train is a surprisingly good Adult Swim show that's not as edgy as R&M but it's not as silly as say, Adventure Time. 9. Ramy This was a total sleeper hit for me. Super glad I cruise TVIV chat thread or I would never had watched this. 8. The Good Place DON'T LEAVE ME! 7. Undone Undone is amazing but I'm kinda mad that they're making a second season. It should have been one and done IMHO 6. Doom Patrol Never in my life would I have imagined a Doom Patrol show being GOOD. Holy gently caress it really was though. 5. Chernobyl Not Great, Not Terrible 4. Star Trek Discovery Hahaha suck my dick Trek nerds. Discovery is fun. Let go of "but it's not trek!" and enjoy it. 3. For All Mankind This show had pacing issues but once you get past that yeah it's great. It's also a liberal's wet dream so that's fun too. 2. Hey guys, not a TVIV regular but I love TV and ranking things 10) Barry (S2) This should probably be ranked higher, but it's hard to avoid recency bias. I know a lot of moments blew me away, I just can't remember them right now. 9) The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (S1) I'm still watching through this one at a leisurely pace, but it belongs on here if nothing else for the pure impressiveness of the craft that went into it. A sprawling, timely story on top of it doesn't hurt. 8) Succession (S2) I finally got on the hype train and watched seasons 1 and 2 back to back. It's something of a magic trick that this show is so watchable with characters so unlikable and a world that feels so foreign. 7) The Righteous Gemstones (S1) Hysterical gags and well-realized characters. Maybe a bit of a step down from Vice Principals, but still very good. 6) Joe Pera Talks With You (S2) Only 4 episodes of 10 have aired so far for this season, but it doesn't seem to have dipped any from last year. Maybe best described as Mr. Rogers Neighborhood for adults, this is maybe the kindest, gentlest show on TV. Walks an incredible tightrope where Joe's character is desperately strange, but never the butt of the joke. 5) True Detective (S3) The old age makeup was pretty marvelous. The last few episodes are kind of silly, but they still absolutely got to me. 4) I Think You Should Leave (S1) Already mentioned a few times, but Tim Robinson has got to be one of the freshest comic writers working right now. The sketch premises are bizarre, and the laughs per minute are off the chart. His cancelled Comedy Central Show Detroiters, which I didn't hear about until well after it was off the air, is also worth checking out. 3) Undone (S1) It's wild that a show with such a surreal look (it's all rotoscoped if you're not familiar) was also the one with the most naturalistic acting and writing I saw all year. Honestly for all the trippiness and time travel, the show is at its best when it's a few people just sitting around the house goofing around. 2) Chernobyl Wildly compelling, shockingly not-miserable. It's a writing miracle that this show gradually teaches you what you need to know to understand its version of the facts without ever feeling like a chore. Graphite has never been so menacing. 1) Lodge 49 (S2) This one is the runaway for me this year. It gets a lot of comparisons to Pynchon or The Big Lebowski because of its "everyman caught up in a complex, meandering plot" vibes. That's true, and it's a fun aspect of the show, but at its core the show is about people alienated by late capitalism* who ultimately find meaning in community. The three leads (Wyatt Russel, Sonya Cassidy, Brent Jennings) are all great, and there's a deep bench of supporting characters (special shout to David Pasquei, who you probably know as Selina's dirtbag ex in Veep). Also there's magic (sort of). AMC cancelled it at the end of season 2 due to minuscule ratings, and at this point it seems unlikely to be picked up by anyone else. Season 2 wraps things up fairly well, so while there aren't a lot of character arcs left unresolved, it's just a real shame that these people won't be in my life anymore. *I would characterize the show's political/social commentary as "not angry, just disappointed", which may be why it hasn't caught more attention.

Low effort placeholder belted out at work and pending 2 more weeks of tv. I barely watched anything this year, or barely stuck with anything anyway. Lots of abandoned shows after the first few episodes. Temporarily numbering my top 10 but hopefully I will come back and flesh this out. shows I watched every episode (to date) and really enjoyed: 1. Mr Robot - finale may sink this, we'll see, but I love the slow building dread type shows like this and Rubicon. 2. The Mandalorian - only not #1 because its comfort food, but it has style and does fan service right unlike the new movies. 3. The Witcher - I didn't like episodes 7 and 8 as much, but 1-6 were exactly what I wanted from this show, and amazingly for a genre show I've got like half the office watching it now. One of my coworkers hasn't been this excited about a tv show since the old days when we'd compare Buffy the Vampire Slayer spoilers we'd scrounged up from the internet. Another who hates fantasy and refuses to watch Game of Thrones is now eyeballing a Netflix subscription and we caught her listening to "Toss a Coin to your Witcher". 4. The Boys - a lot of fun, never got into the comic but I enjoyed this adaption. Better than the DC movies and arrowverse at the darker side to the MCU. 5. Legion - great visuals and audio, bit too weird and went some dangerous places with an unlikable protagonist, but was a lot of fun to watch. Those time eaters... 6. What We Do in the Shadows - laughed a lot, the vampire council was great. 7. The Orville - great show though I preferred Alara to Talla. It scratches the modern ST:TNG nerve even if Seth pales to Picard and they have to throw in dumb humor now and then to keep the network happy. 8. Brooklyn 99 - love this show, the cast is perfect 9. Stranger Things - I liked this better than season 2, still a bit odd, and my brother spoiled me on a few things, but I liked it and am curious how long they will keep these kids going. shows I watched all of but wasn't impressed enough this year 10. Good Place - too linear, I can't really judge it until it finishes. Still a great cast but it took me 3/4 of the season before I really got into it again. If it was an hour long show I probably would have abandoned it for now, then binged it once its done. Killing Eve - great actresses but nothing too exciting or surprising compared to the first season. shows I may still watch in the next few weeks: Evil - I watched the first couple and enjoyed this, I've got them racking up on my DVR Expanse season 4 - I watched the first ep and will get back to it but its been a busy week, Christmas is coming up, Star Wars and Witcher are dropping this weekend, etc. shows that jumped off my list: Survivor - I still watch this with my grandfather as we have all 39 seasons to date, but this season was pretty painful for many reasons. I expect grandpa to flip over to the impeachment news a lot during the finale tonight. Game of Thrones - ugh. much love to the actors and sfx team but those two guys in charge trashed the place in their rush to leave and move on to bigger and better things. I didn't like the final episodes of Lost or BSG but at least I can respect them for what they tried to do. Posting this just in case, but hopefully I'll get back to it with better shows I've forgotten about or haven't gotten to yet. Might try to cram in Russian Doll as well since I should like that one. 12/27 edit: bolded choices and crammed The Witcher into the top 3. 10) Marvel's Runaways (Hulu): I was going back and forth on whether to put this onto the list, but ultimately I decided to include it. The show concludes the outstanding plotlines of the story, and then moves on to another new plot involving a new main villain Morgan le Fay played by Elizabeth Hurley. Ultimately I really liked it. The crossover with Cloak and Dagger was fun, though I got sad at them saying "hey next time let's do the crossover on Cloak and Dagger" which won't happen now that both shows are cancelled. I really liked this, and felt that it was a solid conclusion. Also it's phenomenally gay, so I felt it was 100% worth including for that alone.  9) Cobra Kai (Youtube TV): In many ways, Season 2 was not as strong as Season 1. Introducing a whole second dojo of students and focusing 8) One Day At A Time (Netflix->POP TV): (Clip from last year but it's my single favorite scene and I binged the whole show this year so  ) One Day At A Time is about a single mother, her mother, and her two children, and it's a light watch. I was sad when Netflix cancelled it, but then POP picked it up and I couldn't be happier. My favorite character is Syd.7) DC's Legends of Tomorrow (CW): I still really love this show, but the back half of the latest season was a bit... muddled. I didn't like the new character Mona, and the nipple humor wasn't totally for me. The latest season doesn't start until 2020 so I can't put it much higher than this. Points for casting Biff, though. 6) Unraveled: Absurdly Complicated Video Game Lore by Brian David Gilbert (Youtube): Brian David Gilbert rules. 5) Steven Universe (Cartoon Network): If I was judging by the whole show, this probably would've scored higher (maybe even #1, definitely at least #2) but I separated out the Movie and Future by virtue of not being "Steven Universe" anymore, and when it comes to the choice between Steven Universe and Steven Universe Future, the former blows the latter out of the water. 4) A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix): Well, friends, the tragic tale of the Baudelaire orphans has reached its conclusion, a term which here means "the show is over, concluded, finished, ended." The final season concluded with an additional epilogue, showing us a smidge more than the books apparently do. Now that the story has concluded, it is my hope that the actors move on to less traumatizing roles, and ultimately find the joy in their lives that the Baudelaire orphans so often lacked. 3) She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Netflix): She-Ra has really grown into its own this year. While Season 1 was a rather simplistic tale, three more seasons were released this year, expanding on most characters. Compare the cast from the beginning of Season 2 to the end of Season 4, and you'll see how different the characters are. I am excited to see what happens with the show next year, and of the 3 Netflix stories in this franchise, it'll honestly probably be the only one I watch. 2) Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix): Season 2 of Sabrina can very easily be a second half of season 1, but it was also quite exciting. I was glad to see Theo come into his own, and I'll be honest, Sabrina and Harvey are way more interesting apart than they ever were together. I'm excited to see where Season 3 goes. Hint: to hell. So, while most of this list was extraordinarily difficult to decide on, #1 was decided on March 9th, because there is an episode of television that released on that date that was unmatched by any other episode of television to release in the year 2019. Honestly better than most I saw over the past few years. That show is 1) Ducktales 2017 (Disney): "Whatever Happened to Della Duck" is the single greatest episode of television I have seen in a long time. In 22 minutes the show introduces us to Della Duck, explains why she has been on the moon for the past 10 years, and why we should care. It introduces the season antagonist, original character General Lunaris, and heavily features the second most iconic tune in all of Ducktales behind the theme song, the song from the Moon level of the NES game. If "Whatever Happened to Della Duck" was the only episode of Ducktales released this year, it would still be #1 in my estimation. That said, it wasn't the only episode of Ducktales released this year, we had approximately half of Season 2 release this year, and the whole season was very good. Every letter* in the title of this one is a different clip, and there are more still I could have used if I didn't want to avoid spoiling the big plot twist that even in a spoilers cool zone I would feel awkward spoiling. If you were a fan of the original Ducktales, if you are a fan of Donald Duck, Huey, Dewey, Louie, Scrooge McDuck, Launchpad McQuack, Magica de Spell, Flintheart Glomgold, Goldie O'Gilt, Darkwing Duck, Gizmoduck, the Three Cabelleros, the Duck Comics, the greater Disney Afternoon Universe, or even if you are just a fan of good television, I implore you, I beg you to watch Ducktales. 10. Wayne I absolutely adore properties that do the Jeremy Saulnier/Coen Bros style of sloppy ultra-violence, everyday protagonist and convoluted storytelling. This scratched my itch. Really hope this show finds a new network so we can get some more. 9. Chernobyl  Fascinating stuff. I really enjoyed learning more about this tragedy and the machinations that led to it. Impeccably researched and impeccably brought to screen. Riveting. 8. Mr Inbetween  This show is a joy to watch. I love that this show is so unapologetically Australian whilst still tapping into some universal stuff that will translate to all Audiences. Watching everything around Ray slowly crumble until he had nothing left was both sad and great to watch. Really interesting to see where he goes next if we get a season 3. 7. Succession  The show continued to get better. Seaon 2 upped the stakes and did a great job of letting us see the good, the bad and the ugly of these awful people. I don't understand how I can both loathe, pity and root for nearly every one of these people, all at the same time. 6. True Detective  Wow, what a return to form. This season was riveting. The leads were fantastic (I could listen to Mahershala Ali talk all day) the story was great, the direction and world-building were mouth-watering. If you gave up on this show after season 2, I highly recommend you catch up with this. 5. Perpetual Grace LTD  If I'm not going to get a third Season of Patriot, then this was a fantastic alternative. An absolute joy to watch. So very very similar to Patriot but so very very different as well. Amazing stuff. The cast is top-notch, Kingsley's character is one for the ages. I was a bit pissed about the final scene, especially if we don't get a second season. Other than that? Flawless. 4. Barry  I fear this show is going to get hurt by airing so early in the year, but Season 2 was an improvement on the already fantastic Season 1. Hader is amazing, No-Ho hank could so easily be Flanderized but continues to be a joy to watch. The show balances drama, comedy, mental anguish and thrill rides so drat well. The direction/production of this show is as classy as the script/performances. 3. Mr Robot  Whilst the last episode has not aired as of me writing this. I'm still going to give this show some massive props for pulling this off. The final season has been an amazing ride and Esmail has done a fantastic tight rope walking job in order to make this final season a success. Bravo. 2. Bluey  If you're a parent, you need to watch this show. Every scene in this show can be directly related to an experience you've had raising your own kids. It's super funny, your kids will love it and the show has legitimately made me cry. They nail it (although you'll also feel like the worst parent ever because you're in no way as patient and willing to engage your kids as much as these parents do). Apparently they've signed a massive overseas licensing deal and in the process of finding a clip to share with you, it appears that it's available on Disney Plus and Disney Kids, so you should definitly be able to check it out. Despite being so true to life, it's also bonkers. Look at this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01AP93OmgUg 1. Watchmen  What a pleasant surprise. The supposedly unadaptable property absolutely slayed. The show did a fantastic job of creating a whole new story, around whole new themes, set 30 years later whilst still feeling wholly part of the source material with a bunch of callbacks for fans. Well paced, amazing world-building and made a truly absurd plot easy to follow and riveting.

There were a few shows I wanted to watch but didn't get around to and I've pretty much run out of time to get to them before the deadline now, so I might as well go ahead and post my list. Streaming shows that appear all at once always do this to me; they're too much of a time commitment to watch all at once when you've got other stuff to do, and if you watch them bit by bit then you can't talk to anyone about them because no one is up to the same episode you are, so I just put them off. I really wish TV shows would go back to coming out one episode a week. Being able to watch that episode whenever you want is a great convenience and I'd never want to go back to having to watch things specifically when the TV station decides to put them on, but too much all at once is counterproductive. Honourable Mentions Gotham The final season was on this year and it was great. One of the few shows that managed to end while I still wanted to watch more of it - and I appreciate that. It's far better than the alternative, which is to go on too long. My only reservation about recommending the series is that the first few episodes of season one are pretty misleading in terms of preparing you for the type of show you should expect. I tell people to put them on in the background while they're doing something else and just start properly watching as the show begins to grab their attention. Beforeigners Inexplicable time portals have opened up and people from the past are arriving in the present. One of them becomes a cop. If you like time travel and cop shows then this is the show for you. And I do like those things. I don't know if there's going to be a second season, but if there is I hope it continues to get the balance right between the cop stuff and the time travel mystery. Bad Mothers Desperate Housewives but Australian. I almost didn't watch this for the same reason I avoided Desperate Housewives when it was first on - the name makes it sound terrible. But you shouldn't let that put you off either show because they're not what they sound like. The Top Ten 10: The Expanse I feel like this show was being made for two distinct and incompatible audiences this year. I loved the politics and terrorism stuff with Avasarala, Ashford and Drummer, but Holden and crew dealing with the colonists and alien stuff really just didn't interest me, and Bobbie just seemed to be there to set some stuff up for next season. But the bits I did like were great. 9: WWE NXT I really wanted to be able to put AEW here, but it's just not quite there yet. I'm still hopeful that it will be on my list next year, and the actual wrestling is better than any of the WWE shows, but taken as a whole NXT is just the best wrestling show. It's got the best characters, it's got the best stories, and although I do prefer the actual wrestling I've seen on AEW so far, there's nothing wrong with NXT in that department either. It's just a really good show. 8: Harley Quinn DC Universe finally has a show that's actually worth watching. Some people didn't like the first episode because of the violence and swearing, but they toned that down if that bothers you. I actually thought it was great, but I'm not too bothered by them taking it out either because the show is still hilarious. Probably not going to appeal to anyone who's not already somewhat familiar with the vast majority of Batman's regular villains. 7: Miracle Workers I expected to watch one episode of this and then forget about it forever, but it turned out to actually be pretty good. It seems like such an easy premise to gently caress up, but they actually managed to do it well. I haven't heard anyone talking about it so I don't know how many people even know it exists, but the basic idea is that God has decided to end the world and a couple of the souls in heaven have to try to perform a miracle in order to convince him not to. It's got Steve Buscemi and Harry Potter in it. 6: Why Women Kill I already mentioned one show that's like Desperate Housewives, and here's another one. Actually, it's more like three shows since the three protagonists never interact and are only connected by having lived in the same house at three different time periods. There is apparently going to be a second season, but if there wasn't you wouldn't be disappointed in the ending. All three stories are finished in a very satisfactory and intentional way. It's one of those rare shows that actually tells a complete story rather than leaving a bunch of loose ends to try to force you to keep watching. 5: In the Dark A blind woman investigates the disappearance of her best friend, despite the objections of just about everyone around her and the various problems in her own life. Although the central mystery didn't really interest me very much I did love the characters. 4: What We Do in the Shadows When I watched the movie I thought it was... fine? Certainly not great. And the TV show started out the same, but quickly became much, much better. The episode with the vampiric council was especially great. 3: Taskmaster I haven't even watched any of this year's episodes because I'm several seasons behind but I'm confident it's still good. Maybe I'll get sick of it by the time I get to the 2019 episodes, but I doubt it. Comedians doing dumb challenges only to realise, too late, that they went about them in entirely the wrong way is just a consistent premise. 2: A Series of Unfortunate Events This show will wreck your evening , your whole life, and your day. Every single episode is nothing but dismay. Honestly, not as good as the previous season but still pretty drat good. 1: The Magicians It's almost unfathomable how good this show has become. I'm still not going to recommend it to anyone because to get here you have to first endure the utterly terrible first season, and it would not be reasonable to subject anyone to that. But if you did watch the first season and gave up then you should really watch the rest, because you're through the worst of it and it's all upward momentum from there. Edit: The Good Place originally made the list but I decided to leave it out in favour of Harley Quinn, which I guess I forgot to include originally. Turns out I need to catch up on a lot of TV shows that aired this year, like Bojack, GLOW and Ms Maisel. This is what I got though: 10. South Park More of the same stuff, except not really, as first half of the season is focused on Stan's Tegridy Farms and using the business to springboard into the usual current event commentary Trey and Matt tend to do. Then the later eps are standalone eps focusing on different SP characters, in a TV show inside a TV show meta deal, like when the residents of SP watch last season's PC Babies show on their terrestrial TV 9. Watchmen First six eps hit the mark of good TV, but Lindelof fails to match the hype with the last two eps that hamfist an ending into various threads sewn in the first half. Nonetheless a brave attempt at creating a Watchmen universe that goes past the comics and even expands on some things, like Hooded Justice. Not necessarily all for the better, but unique and entertaining anyway. 8. Rick and Morty Only five eps so far, one of which isn't as great as the others, but more of the same crazy sci fi concepts that only R&M can do. Animation quality got a good jump this season as well. 7. Black Mirror The 3 episode release was a nice surprise when it came out. Not as great as past BMs but still some unique tech concepts explored with human consequences. 6. The Expanse Not as fast paced or high stakes as previous seasons, but still a nice little season to warm up their new relationship with Amazon. We get to see more of the main cast doing what they do best. 5. Chernobyl Though the facts are a bit dressed up, this show focused on the human side of things and how it was affected by a nuclear meltdown in the 80s. Well paced three parter. 4. Silicon Valley Final season of the iconic show, Judge has discussed how the tech industry nowadays makes such a show harder to satire. The finale touches on how technology doesn't necessarily make the world a better place like all the startups aspired to in the first season. Thought this season was one of the best all round. 3. The Witcher As a fan of the games this gets pretty high on my list, but the daring attempt to follow 3 different characters across indeterminate timeframes following the short stories from the books can make this a hard watch for those new to the series. Personally thought they did well enough with Geralt, but the other side plots need more work. 2. The Boys Like Preacher, another great adaptation of a Garth Ennis novel. Great characters and a compelling plot. 1. The Mandalorian Have yet to watch the final ep but these guys do a lot at conveying the tone of the OT without much dialog. Baby Yoda. 1. Chernobyl (Miniseries) Absolutely gripping from start to finish. A must watch. 2. Glow (S3) Ruth “Zoya the Destroya” Wilder (Alison Brie), Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan (Betty Gilpin) and friends are in Vegas and getting up to all sorts of antics putting on their wrestling show. It's a lot of fun, often touching and hits some very good highs throughout the season. 3. The Expanse (S4) It's a show about people in space, but now they are on a new planet and it's trying to tell us something about how people treat refugees. It's good, netflix is stupid for letting it go. 4. The Mandolorian (S1) It's everything good about classic star wars with new characters. Baby yoda. 5. Fleabag (S2) It's very smart, funny and has a lot of heart. Sometimes it will crush you. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a gem. Andrew Scott is fantastic as he is in everything he stars in. 6. The Letdown (S2) Probably the only show on this list that not many people will know about. The show focuses on Audrey as she struggles with her identity as a woman, being the mother of a toddler and having a partner away for work and all the crazy poo poo that entails that is not often spoken about. Watching this show feels like eating your favourite ice cream. 10. Peaky Blinders (S5) Still one of the best shows on TV even at season 5. Always over the top. FWIW, this rule seems pretty dumb and probably contributes to why this thread only has like 10 replies after being up for almost a month. I mean, sure, if you’re putting some obscure show that a lot of people haven’t heard of on your list, then yeah - write a little blurb about it. But if your list is all well-known properties(nothing wrong with this, mine is), you shouldn’t have to figure out something new to say just to vote. Having said that, here’s my list. Judging by looking at everyone else’s lists, there’s a lot of shows I missed that I’ll have to catch up on! Honorable Mentions: Righteous Gemstones, GLOW, The Good Place, The Boys, Dead to Me, Dickinson, PEN15, Living With Yourself, Black Mirror 10. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (S3) - I struggled a bit with which show to put here, but Maisel ended up winning out. It’s also a bit of a contradiction because one of my criticisms of this season was that they spent a little too much time with the various musical performances throughout the year, but also those performances were so well done it earned the show a spot on the list. 9. Barry (S2) - Good show, good performances, good season. Even though I seem to be in the minority in thinking the crazy feral girl episode was too over the top for this show and a bit of a misstep. 8. Cobra Kai (S2) - Show continues to punch well above its weight in terms of how good a revival show based on an 80s movie should be. The last ep is absolutely crazy in a great way. 7. Russian Doll (S1) - Great show, very excited (and a bit apprehensive) to see where they go for S2. 6. Wayne (S1) - This show came outta nowhere and was the perfect mix of over the top violence/action and sweet, coming of age, young-love relationshippy moments. Which are not often thongs that go together, but they did here. Screw you, YouTube for cancelling this. 5. Santa Clarita Diet (S3) - Continuing the “screw you” train, screw you Netflix for cancelling this. The third season didn’t lose any steam and the writing and acting was as sharp as ever. I’ve talked to more than a few people who said they gave up on this show after the pilot was mostly gross out humor. If you’re one of those people, go back and give it another chance. There’s still some gross out humor (though not really as much as the pilot), and the rest of the show is really great. 4. Catastrophe (S4) - Great ending to a great show. 3. Unbelievable (S1) - More people need to see this show. I’ve talked to a few people who really had their eyes opened regarding what kind of treatment rape victims receive when going through the system, and how it needs to change. I’ve also talked to a couple people who didn’t realize it was all based on a true story, so if there’s one thing I would change about that show it would be to put that disclaimer before every episode. 2. The Mandalorian (S1) 1. Watchmen (S1) - I really struggled with what order to place these last two shows in. They both revitalized episodic storytelling and the idea that shows being released weekly is actually a good thing. Both of these shows made for great conversation / speculation / discussion both on the forums(though I almost gassed the Watchmen thread several times wtf is wrong with you people) and (GASP) in real life. In the end, I gave Watchmen the edge just due to the difficulty in pulling it off. I went into Watchmen with zero expectations and it blew me away. I had high expectations for Mando (and to be fair it exceeded my high expectations, which is actually probably a harder feat), but Watchmen seemed like it would be impossible to pull off.
