i was right about the reason, but wrong about the platform: they did it so that the game could run on dual-core machines.

you didn’t have to switch to the detonator. pressing a+b simultaneously also acted as a trigger :ssh:

uncompressed art assets for the sake of latency pops up quite a bit in games. given how often i've seen it be faster to load compressed data and decrypt it than to read the uncompressed data, i have trouble believing that it's actually a good idea even if you don't give the slightest gently caress about your install size.

audio doesn’t have to load quickly, it can stream in faster than it can be played, even with DVDs

For me, I'm loving Titanfall, but geeze does that 48 GB size make my 240 GB SSD cry. Since it apparently wouldn't effect the performance on my high-level PC anyway, I don't see why the uncompressed audio couldn't have been an optional download...

somewhat believable though that it is a multiplatform safety thing, where suitably light and fast compression is better almost always, but some ancient hardware could be tripped up by it, where uncompressed is 100% predictable everywhere.

at least when combined with all games being made under time constraints which are bound to make the devs extremely conservative in every technical choice which isn't a direct selling point (e.g. pretty much everything except the sophistication of shaders).
