Every once in a while I get a wild hair up my rear end about tracking down an old sci-fi comic my grandma had in her RV when I was a kid, then quickly realize the futility of it. I remember a single frame only, what I think was either an astronaut or a time traveler visiting a more advanced civilization and marveling at a machine resembling a microwave as it synthesizes what I specifically remember to be a plate of fish and chips (the astronaut describes it as such). The art style was realistic, resembling the old hand drawn movie posters from the 60s/70s, or that of Tales from the Crypt, in fact it might be an old TftC issue, gramma had tons of em. This is literally all I know. I've pretty much resigned myself to never finding out, but if someone knows what it is it would scratch one hell of an itch. This comic would probably have been from the 70s or 80s.

It's been so long I don't recognize anything specific but the art style and period seems right, and we do get a lot of cultural flotsam from Britain. My roommate just asked me about an anime that he's been looking for that he saw in high school. He knows it aired on Funimation, and guesses the original air date to be from 2009-2011. From what he told me, it's about an internet troll guy who meets a girl who can pull swords from another dimension, at one point doing so from a wall. He's trying to learn how to do the same thing, since he has that as a buried ability; he wrongly thinks it's a property of a sword he owns, but in reality that sword is a fake. I don't know anything about it beyond that.

I'm trying to remember the name of a really lovely old PC platformer I played probably in the mid to late 90s. It had one of the weirdest design flaws I've ever seen. Whenever you scrolled the screen it just showed you garbage data unless you went into the menu and back out again. The programmer's solution to this was to have this demonstrated by the game's demo that autoplays in the main menu so you know it's supposed to look like that. Also for shits and giggles can someone find the avatar I used as a teen. You can see part of it in this picture.

That poo poo was crazy as gently caress. Does anyone remember a front page article that was doing something like mocking a forum of people who believed that if you cracked open a tortoise it would be full of treasure? But then it turned out that the forum was itself fake and made up by FYAD or something as bait? Am I losing my mind here?

I read a book/novella online about a guy who infiltrated terrorist groups, helped them do their attack, and then found another one to facilitate. It ended up being a love story and was loosely based on the Aum Shinkrikyo attacks. I think it probably got pulled down after 9/11 and I'm not even sure I want to read it again so much as confirm it wasn't a fever dream.

In 2004 Fox had a two episode knockoff of the Bachelor called The Littlest Groom, where the bachelor and the contestants were all midgets. I remember it being the funniest goddamn thing I had ever watched, and I’ve tried to find the full length episodes for years and It’s like the whole thing vanished.

I've been searching on and off for years to find the movie "Strangler vs Strangler", specifically the Canon Films English dub. A friend and I caught it randomly on some hosted movie show on TV in the early 90's (searches have led me to believe it must have been Joe Bob Briggs.) I don't know what the original Serbian script is like, but the English dub was hilariously bad and was a source of tons of in-jokes for us for years. I've found some places to buy the original Serbian version, and I think I even once found it uploaded to some website, but I have never been able to find the English dub for sale or otherwise. I expect I never will since Canon Films is long gone and I doubt such an obscure film would ever get any sort of re-release, even if it is apparently a cult classic in its homeland. Probably for the best as I'm sure actually seeing it again wouldn't live up to the nostalgia. It's a Serbian horror-comedy about a man who sells carnations, lives with his abusive mother, and starts strangling women who won't buy his flowers. There is an inept detective following the case who lives alone with his cat who speaks to him with text screens (like old silent movie cards, not sure what the technical term is,) and a young punk band singer who develops a psychic link to the carnation selling serial killer (the name of his band is "The Stranglers" thus the title "Strangler vs Strangler".) I started reading this thread and was all prepared to post the white whale that has haunted me since the 90s. A TV movie I saw about the first manned Mars mission, everything starts to go wrong and then there's a freaky twist ending which was really the only reason it stayed in my mind. I think I may have dug up the name of it once years ago, but it had long since been forgotten. The only other thing I had remembered was that I thought I watched it when it played opposite the Superbowl on another channel. Then I got to recommendations to check out DuckDuckGo, and after a few searches and poking around IMDB and Wikipedia (where another page mentions it but it does not have a page of its own) I found it! Special Report: Journey to Mars. And more over, someone uploaded it on YouTube only two drat months ago! I asked this before in one of the Star Trek threads and got nothing: Can anyone tell me if that old rear end A/T thread(I think it was Ask/Tell) from pre 2008 from with all the behind the scenes stories from working on one or more of the 90's Star Trek series is goldmined/archived? Had stories like Jonathan Frakes pulling pranks and throwing a crazy bouncy ball in the room directly under some exec's office as hard as he possibly could. The exec was known to have a terrible temper and came out red faced screaming ready to murder whoever did it, but he sees its Frakes and he just can't say poo poo to him, so he turns around and just goes back to his office. Also possibly the Dr. Bashir/Captain Sisko real life, on set feud stories from DS9? It seemed like it was very popular reading and linked in GBS regularly to people back then, but I haven't seen it in probably a decade and I've looked in the archives and haven't found it. I'm hoping it didn't get deleted because I remember there being some really good stories in there Id like to show other people.

There was this amazing documentary on UK channel 4 decade or so ago that had an actual scientist follow around and heckle a cryptozoologist as he basically paid god knows how much in tourist chain yankery to find the mapinguari, a giant sloth. Close to the end if my hazy memory is correct, he was told all kinds of stupid gibberish powers it had (I think mostly by children in a village, nonsense like it had several heads and its breath was a deadly poison), and STILL paid some locals to take him up to where it was last spotted, they took him and dr. heckler md there and I swear I saw everyone on camera smirking like hell or at least trying not to as he made this moo noise he thought mythological giant sloths with magic powers made. The end of it was basically him flouncing that the scientist was making fun of it. Also good but buried, was another UK show, where they did a documentary on varying degrees of white nationalists/jingoists/complete racists, then gave them their DNA results to show they were all goddamn mongrels like the rest of us. I remember one wouldn't continue the show, but the rest were like "yeah, so like I said, if you're third or second generation and look white, you're british." Basically the no entry point was whatever their own results showed. Pretty vicious given that it seemed clear they'd been asked all their beliefs THEN given the results.
