Looking cute, feeling cute.
People go out of their way to "interpret all the secrets" of Harry Potter, performing more analysis of Snape's actions than an English major would, to the point where I can't help but be reminded of Sunday School class. It seriously a foundational and even religious text for some people, they're actually trying to find some hidden higher value to it (though it still seems to be copying Western versions of Christian values, so it might be acting as more a reinterpretation of the Bible than its actual replacement).

But the point that Star Wars is just an expression in aestheticism sounds right.

The idea that the prequels are rehabilitated seems to exist only in the minds of people who watch long rear end youtubes, similarly I think the "discourse" about the new movies is largely not representative of the actual popularity. Though I know a lot of people who either don't want to see the new films or outright hated them, and even that mild lack of consensus is enough to turn the algorithm ecosystem into constant star wars anxiety.

it definitely feels like the people who just consume the movies the same way they would any normal franchise thing don't care that much. people talked about the lovely game of thrones ending way more than ROS

He's gained a lot of cool guy points in my book for not pretending like star wars is special

I know Carrie Fisher sat down with Daisey Ridley and told her that people were going to be super lovely to her about her looks, I get the feeling that all three of the main actors got at least one talk from one of the original trilogy actors telling them not to take the series seriously and just take the paychecks. John Boyega is giving zero fucks about pissing off the fans, and Oscar Isaacs outright said he has no interest in reprising his role.

Probably they got the talk from Harrison Ford, he wanted out of that series since 1980.

Hopefully they'll all go the Daniel Radcliffe route of "gently caress it, I can live the rest of my life off the checks from these big movies" and do whatever weird small movies they want for the rest of their careers rather than chasing the next big role.

some of this is fairly plausible but the notion that Disney would deliberately sabotage one of their biggest franchises just to make Abrams look worse in WB's eyes is so absurd that I'm not buying any of it

I just find it annoying how people keep going into CineD to meltdown about whatever movie opinion they have, and then go to other forums to say actually it was the opposite.

Like with Zack Snyder movies. Apparently the fact that people like his movies is enough to give people aneurysm or something. I don't like his movies much, but I don't give a poo poo that people like them.

CinD does seem like the prime forum example of someone kramering into a thread at least once a day and losing their poo poo when people disagree with them about a movie. the comic book movie threads are unreadable.

I remember going into the comic book thread to rant about how bad Man of Steel was and getting schooled pretty hard. Now I've come around and think MoS is a good movie that I just really don't like.

yeah, and people taking the time to talk about good and bad cinematography helped me appreciate movies more even when I didn't like those movies, or liked movies that had, ultimately, a bad visual style

My biggest CineD memories include seeing multiple posters exercise Herculean effort to prove Ghost in the Shell wasn't whitewashing. In a movie where the producers seriously considered using CGI to make Scarlett Johansson "look" asian.

Also, some guy insisted in the Get Out thread a while back that the bodysnatching was all in Chris' head and that he killed an innocent family, and other posters just actively encouraged him to double down on it for multiple pages.
