The uniforms are sharp, the props are interesting, and the set designs are really sleek. However, the lens flare distracts from being able to see them.

Halloween Jack posted:I can't help but be curious about when they're going to make media set post-Episode IX, because the way they hosed around with the setting really makes it anything-goes from there on out. Are there any more remnants of the Empire left? Is there a New New Republic? Is Rey gonna start another Jedi temple? Was R2-D2 just piloted by porgs the whole time? From a narrative standpoint it'll be incredibly easy to just ignore the entire sequel trilogy. The status quo post-ROTJ is restored without any meaningful changes, and I doubt anyone involved in the ST is really champing at the bit to get back in front of the screen.

They were able to get Harrison Ford back twice, so I'm not buying anybody promising they won't be back if Disney decides they really want them. It's arguably even a good negotiating tactic to let everyone know how much you don't want to come back (though obviously if you really do want to come back and/or work with Disney again on other projects it's also dangerous to take it too far). Yeah, but Ford had a solid career and just wanted a new biplane or whatever. Ridley and Boyega are still trying to carve out careers, plus they have the benefit of hindsight looking at Mark and Carrie's careers for the 20 years post-ROTJ. Also, while I'm excited for SMG's thoughts on the movie, I'd imagine there's not going to be enough meat on those bones for any interesting analysis.

Yeah there’s tons of fat you can trim, and the second film would probably need to get punched up a bit with more focus on Leia and the Noghri as the main character drivers and less on underwater casinos, but overall it would be solid. Should have done it this way for sure. I would also accept a Mara Jade / Kardde pre-novel show

Halloween Jack posted:I have only passing familiarity with the EU, but it seems like Disney Star Wars mined it for ideas. Thrawn, of course, but wasn't there also a comic series where the Emperor cloned himself and wants to possess Luke or something like that? Yup! There are so many good threads in the novels you don’t even remember until you read them though. Off the top of my head: Leia having actual agency while pregnant and being the key character using diplomacy with the Noghri. Luke separated from the force on Myrkry (sp?) but instead of being a whiny baby he is still a Jedi and acts like it. Game Bel Iblis and the separate rebellion factions (worked well for what little drama it added to rogue 1) Mara and Kardde rescuing Luke from the star destroyer and Thrawn almost outthinking their escape plan The attempt to kidnap the twins So much good stuff is in there.

I guess it depends on how you define a strong or weak character. I think Rey and Finn's characterization is fairly consistent through the three movies. I felt like I generally had a decent feeling for who they were and the choices they made were generally in line with who we knew them to be. It's not like they were cardboard cutouts, they just ultimately didn't go through much that truly challenged and changed them.

Someday this unjust status quo will end. The long star wars thread schism will be over, and there will again only be one thread instead of two threads that are effectively just one thread but in an annoying inefficient way

After re-reading the alleged leak on Reddit, there is nothing about any of those omissions that would have made the plot much better. I mean, it's mostly the same movie, just a lot more of it. Oh, and they didn't let Finn and Poe be gay, and Rose had some recess in between her homework assignment. And assuming 100% of it is true, would any of that added anything to the movie? Not really. Some of the stuff that would have explained some things within the plot (Leia saving Ben, Finn just saying what he needed to tell Rey) that would have been nice, but wouldn't have really fixed the much bigger problems with the pacing or the endless hunt of mcguffins. I preordered the novelization today because I *hope* it makes some of the movie make sense.
