Which is funny given this is what was originally supposed to happen, and Abrams only had Poe survive because Isaacs didn't want to only be in 20 minutes of the new Star Wars.

I really doubted that whole JJ Cut thing too but for what it’s worth that is the dude who leaked the plot of TRoS with 90% accuracy four months before it came out. And the bits that were wrong are so poorly edited into the final film they feel like reshoots, which the leaker confessed hadn’t happened yet and were subject to change.

Feels very dubious to me: Studio interference I can buy. But Disney tanked a major film and franchise to diminish the reputation of a director so in the future he couldn't make a good film for a competitor?

And the "JJ can do no wrong" feels like the counterpart to the similar rumours about Josh Whedon: "no, his stuff was really amazing, it was other people that ruined it."

I do have to wonder what was behind some of the dumber choices in TLJ. Knives Out seems proof enough that he hasn't lost his mind and can still make an excellent movie. I'd buy Disney messing with his work. Never really been impressed with JJ on the other hand.

Everyone hated Canto Blight, Del Toro's subplot (while having lota of legs) doesn't really have ramifications and he's too distracting in his mannerisms, Poe needing a sacrifice to be like "ok drat no she knew what was up".

Some people didn't like that it picked up right where TFA left off so there's less of that filling in of the world while we were waiting -- (like how ESB clearly shows poo poo's been going on since ANH)

Del Toro's subplot directly leads to the transport ships being detected and exploded en masse

However, she surprised me to say her list was 3,2,1. She said she can no longer get past that relationship with Marion as she was too young and taken advantage of.

Canto Blight is unfortunate but at the same time feels exactly like the kind of pet idea that someone had their heart on too much to cut, so I don't really think it adds more evidence of the studio inteference.

Well ain't that precious?

The Last Jedi's subplot problem is because the entire movie was in a holding pattern until Rey finished her spiritual journey. They could have cut everything about the rebel fleet being under seige in space by having them go the base directly, and nothing important to the plot would've been lost.

I don't see how "a single idea that was spitballed during rough drafts when they were just throwing out ideas to see what would stick" somehow morphed into "this was what they ORIGINALLY WANTED in the film" unless you have no idea how moviemaking works and/or have an axe to grind.

ChickenMedium posted:

I mean Star Wars fans have spent almost 20 years trumpeting the opposite narrative, that everything cool and good about the original Star Wars movie had nothing to do with George Lucas and anything they didn't like was entirely because of his meddling. Instead of grappling with the fact that maybe if you only like two movies in an 11 movie series you don't actually like that series they just dig deeper and assure themselves that everything was supposed to be good except for THOSE FUCKERS ruining OUR poo poo.
