back in the marshes of mordor with the hobbits, loving sam has fallen asleep on duty and let gollum slip away. he becomes extremely agitated (during the following sequence of images he is talking only to himself) as he's breaking the news to frodo, sam becomes so distraught he begins to eat his own cloak but then, thank the lord, gollum returns of his own accord... with a gift!

our heroes stand watch on the walls of helm's deep. the tunics are short, the thighs are bulging, the rotoscoping at this point is deployed strategically to high-priority zones

this hot mess comes streaming down the hill toward the castle. the orcs send their wolves ahead of them, but the shots of the wolves appear to be taking place somewhere completely different a lot of this goes on, then the orcs climb the walls. the majority of them are wearing grey dressing gowns; i'm assuming this is traditional orcish battle gear and the outfits we saw in moria were just their casual wear by now the only rotoscoping going on is the gentle falling of the animators' tears upon the raw film footage fauna fucked around with this message at 15:12 on Jan 3, 2020 |

I always thought some of the film used for rotoscoping in this movie was stock footage, not sure if that’s the case though

back in the depths of mordor, gollum ruins yet another moment frodo is clearly dying, and i'm worried about him because by my clock he's only got like eight minutes to get the ring into mount doom before the movie ends. sam on the other hand is not behaving in a particularly supportive manner

Here's a shot of helms deep as Gandalf describes it. It's a shame we didn't get this weird underworld magic tower stuff and just got the Basic Castle shots.

purple death ray posted:this kind of art is exactly my poo poo, I want all my fantasy to look like it's being sold in a headshop in the late 70s. I think the original tunic & no pants design for Link in the first Zelda game probably was pretty heavily inspired by Aragorn there honestly a lot of 80s fantasy art from Japan make a lot more sense to me now also, I missed a lot of the thread the first time around but I gotta join in on the love for Aragorn's design here. Viggo was fine but he just looks like a movie star. Bakshi's Aragorn is a beautiful brutal hard living barbarian motherfucker.

There's a line in this movie where Frodo threatens to put the ring on and order Gollum to jump off a cliff. It's a small but important thing that was missing from Jackson's films because it shows the ring does give normal people power to dominate others.
