I think it's a matter of how US-centric this whole fiasco is. In the US the XBox One is running neck and neck with the PS4 (24.5 million vs 28 million by VGChartz) - and I suspect with the Microsoft Campus in Sillicon Valley and the XBox almost specialising in online multiplayer shooters rather than single player story driven (the way the best PS4 exclusives do) then the Chrome people probably actually think the XBox is the console with mindshare - because round them it is.

Also when you ask a PS4 player why the PS4 the first thing they point to is the exclusives. XBox gamers may point to the XBox One X being the most powerful console. Stadia is competing with one of these but not the other.

My alarm on my Google Home Mini went off, and so I say "hey Google Stop." It then turned off the application running on my Chromecast Ultra, which happens to be a Stadia game.

This is akin to a passenger telling a driver "please stop" while they're driving on the highway. Did they mean, please stop the music, please stop tapping the wheel since it's annoying, please stop tailgating, etc. The first assumption should not be, please stop the car immediately on a busy highway. And yet this is what Google is doing with Stadia.

This shouldn't happen, and it should be an easy fix. If a user says "Hey Google stop," and the assistant thinks that it's taking about Stadia, it should ask "Did you want me to turn off Stadia?"

It should only immediately turn off Stadia if the user specifically mentions the device used (eg CCU name or TV name for smart TVs), "Stadia" or game running.

(To avoid this from happening, I'll from here on say "stop alarm." But the user shouldn't need to change their behavior to avoid this.)

Stadians try to drum up support for factorio on stadia by making accounts to post on their forums.
They meet people hearing about Stadia for the first time, and immediately get asked why on earth they want to buy the game again when they could just use Steam-streaming.

quote:

My question is, why force players off steam and onto your own platform? Because reminder: You probably need to re-buy the game on stadia. No one likes the epic games launcher, why would googles be any different?

quote:

And remember any semi decent pc or laptop can run factorio.
Actually I‘ve runned a rather big base with an potato (Laptop with i5 7200U, Radon R5 M420 and 8GB DDR4 Ram) over the holidays and got decent FPS (of course on a small integrated screen and researching nothing). But my point is, condsidering the steam stream function any machine a little bit better than this example should be able to stream the game on practically every screen and like PyroFire explained beeing able to do MP.

quote:

I do also think your example is more of a hardware matter, I‘ve tested WiFi streaming on a rather large display with a RTX 2070 and i7-9750. The quality wasn’t extraordinary, but quite good enough.
Steam is undoubtedly the most commonly used platform.

Edit: Nevermind, I just found some article saying that Microsoft were officially no longer reporting hardware sales. I guess their ego or stock price isn't able to deal with reporting mediocre sales news every year or so.

No - but there have been occasional leaks. Just under 30 million by the end of 2017 according to EA

Had I been in a situation like that, I would at least have tried switching to another game just to see if it was the stream having issues or if the game itself was actually stuttering on the server due to some memory leak or such.

Guys my number one top buying concern is lag, as a gamer its simply intolerable to have any lag. So... what TV do I get to go with my Stadia?

Buying a new TV - how to avoid “tv lag”?

So I currently have a 1080p 65 inch Vizio from 2015.

Absolutely zero lag. No “game mode” required.

My friend has a newer 4K vizio. Bad tv lag. Turning on game mode helps quite a bit but but is visually annoying.

Is there anything to look for in a TVs specs that will indicate if it will have this “tv lag”.

I’d love to upgrade to a 75 inch 4K tv but scared I’ll get stuck lag or forced to use the ugly “game mode”

The point of doing that isn't the image quality; all of the effects add latency that isn't really noticeable when you're watching TV but definitely is noticeable when you're playing video games.

The casual gamer with good internet isn't necessarily the future it's just a big untapped market. Lowering the barrier for entry is a big deal. It obviously doesn't tickle people who have bleeding edge setups. Destiny runs as well or smoother than the consoles.

All of the negative nancys coming in here and poo-pooing on people who are able to finally get back into gaming or game for the first time are not paying attention. Pearl clutching consoles and sitting behind your gaming rigs and thinking you're better than stadians... No one cares? Every time someone says they're having fun stadia these little gremlins come in here and start saying that we have a bunch of paid shills up in here, almost in disbelief... Or they actually have the balls to say " if you think that's good you should invest $1,000 and see what real gaming is... " ...they are constantly bring up the fact that stadia still has a lot of problems. There is a problem apparently and it's for the critics...it's working and people are having a lot of fun and a lot of people who wouldn't be gaming, are playing. This is only going to ramp up as the base tier drops. That's an even lower barrier for entry.

There are people literally gaming for the first time because of the service and there are people who are coming back to gaming because of this service. I am repeating this because it's a big deal. They are able to play AAA titles... Granted we need more and I expect more are coming... But think about that for a moment if they are able to pull customers from the periphery... Stadia has the potential to engulf. That's really not hyperbole. Continuing to drop the barrier of entry only broadens the untapped market... And this will fuel more investment. There's only going to be more and more gamers falling out of gaming and casual dad's you don't have the time stadia will continue to consume those types. the business model continues to stabilize and somewhere down the line they upgrade the hardware. this is quickly going to become an infrastructure game...if it's not already. I don't see how PlayStation really competes in this regard. Microsoft is at least somewhat well-positioned. When my kids grow up gaming to them will be like what music was after the internet. Who's buying physical copies anymore? You're going to have the niche market of people who own record players (gaming rigs) but the majority will shift. Simply because the barrier for entry is so low.

I think about the absolute impracticality of buying a record player right now and storing a bunch of records somewhere. People used to have CD cases on display in their living rooms and you don't see that anymore. I suspect it's the same for gaming and that probably explains some of the vitriol. Change is never easy for the folks that it's happening directly to.

The only thing stadia is going to have to do is stay current with release titles going forward. That's the bare minimum. If they start releasing first-party exclusive that can leverage the hardware in the way that they say that it can be leveraged then I think you're going to see something that will actually peel away the entrenched gamers who are dedicated to their gaming rigs or their particular brand of gaming console. Cloud gaming is the future. Casual dads are just going to hold open the time gate until the rest of you are ready to come through.

But I've never heard anyone who 'haven't played games before' praising stadia.

The only people I hear from are gamer dads or ones who used to have a gaming pc or a ps4 or nes or snes or switch. Mainly those who used to game before but are finding it harder to make time for gaming.

Stadia hasn't tapped into this 'untapped market' at all. I suppose they may once the 'free option' pops up but honestly anyone who doesn't have a console or gaming pc are playing on their phones and they're not gonna buy $30+ dollar games.

If anything stadia is actually worse because you have to boot the game up every time you switch on your stadia device. On consoles these days unless you're switching games you can keep your game session suspended which means you can literally be in the middle of a story mission. When you resume on console it can literally take less than a minute to actually be playing again. With stadia, if you have to quit you're counting on the autosave hopefully saving plenty of progress for you, or make a manual save as soon as you can. And have fun sitting through all the title and game engine opening credits before being able to load your save.

I get it, there's some convenience in being able to access your library from a Chromecast, chrome browser or phone but there are plenty of things you're giving up just to have that.

Patching and installing games are so immaterial in the long run. I buy all my games digitally and I usually just hit the order button while I'm at work and it's downloaded for me when I get home.(not to mention Pre-orders download in advance) Thanks to auto updates most everything is updated before I play it. Even when I want to play something that just got a patch the very same day, I just play something else while it downloads in the background.

I stalling from disc can be annoying but I guess you can just do it before you go to bed or leave for work.
