If you watch old BTAS, the quality of the animation varies wildly because they used seven different international animation studios in order to get s1 out on time. The ones from AKOM are so bad they fired the firm. TMS/Spectrum were probably the best. TMS animated the title sequence and some other episodes.

Netflix and Prime rarely get 3rd party studio movies in anything other than 1080p and since New Line was bought by Warner Bros, LOTR would be on HBO Max (and we have yet to see if they are finally going to extend to 4k HDR streaming.) It's also very likely going to be an upscale since it's such a SFX heavy movie and was mastered with a 2k DI. Could still be worth it for the HDR though. Poorly-mastered SD looks like poo poo. There's quite a gulf of quality that exists within DVDs. Some are little better than VHS transfers, others look almost as good as a standard blu-ray. It has a lot to do with what source they used.

Plus, anytime there is someone to take over a mantle, they both end up retconning or tucking them away in some alternate universe, and every couple years there's some cosmic crisis to gently caress everything around again. Plus a vocal group of dickheads gets mad every time their successor doesn't confirm to their eugenics plan. I have to think even if DC or Marvel wanted to go hardcore and start letting established IPs die or change if comic book whiners wouldn't rage until they had to reverse course, leaving people a decade forward wondering what was up with their weird one step forward, two weird backflips back.

As long as you have a TV that can handle HDR and Dolby Vision, it's very worth it. You don't get much from the resolution bump, but the color depth is worth it, especially if you like a lot of movies shot on film.

Physical media is still a $6bil /year industry. It's declining, but it ain't dead yet. It's also usually cheaper to buy the physical disc with the digital copy than it is to just buy the digital copy and rentals are like 1/3rd the price too.

The writing's so much quicker than I remember it being. Granted, I haven't watched it since I had a TV to catch reruns on. There's a lot of stuff I missed growing up even tho I've seen every episode so many times.
