I for one am glad that a film that has been critically savaged is flopping at the BO.

And now a little work anecdote. I am working on a Dutch WW2 film, which has a small English-language storyline with two English actors. I have been helping a bit on the casting side and doing the talent deals. (I do not enjoy talent deals but there was nobody else on this project better qualified, so rather I do it than someone else gently caress it up). The actor is reasonably well known but not a huge star - he is best known as a major supporting actor in a huge franchise from a few years ago. We agree key commercial terms and send a long-form agreement. His LA lawyer (oh god...) responds...very reasonably. For instance, when it comes to likeness tie and credits etc (if someone else gets a likeness then this actor has to get one too) he excludes the three main leads, i.e., he acknowledges that his client is a supporting actor and not a lead. (In other words, this actor only gets his likeness included in promotional materials if any other actor excluding the three leads is featured too). This is surprising: the MO is to act as if your client is a huge star and demand that they are treated as well as the leads. For their starting position to recognise that he is supporting is remarkable.

The negotiation goes on pretty easily and smoothly, with the other side being firm-ish but fair and open to reason. We sign the deal. The Dutch are flabbergasted. To them this has been an absolute marathon of a negotiation, with an incredibly complex and detailed agreement resulting. They are used to much smaller, simpler films with correspondingly simpler Dutch cast agreements. As far as I was concerned, this was pretty smooth sailing. Anyway, it made me look good, which is the main thing.

The other element I am handling is that there is a big Netflix deal which is only paid after delivery. So in order to convert it to production cashflow we need to get a loan. They had a Dutch lender who was offering what I thought were eye-watering terms for a vanilla fully-collateralised loan, so i submitted it to a specialist film financing bank, which came in with a much lower price. We are now working to get that loan facility in place. Again, it's slightly complex for the Dutch but as far as film financing transactions go, it's very straightforward.

Skimbleshanks confused me, because he's the only cat who wears pants, and he wears them prominently. Skimbleshanks broke my friend, because all of the cats started wearing shoes during his song.

Well how could a cat tap dance without shoes on? That just doesn't make sense fran.

Its one of my favorite scifi flicks and I actually find the point where it turns into a bit of a slasher really great, which seems to be most peoples issue with it. Its got a really nice sense of existential dread mixed with "hard" scifi.

The panel repair sequence, the airlock jump sequence and the final fall into the sun sequence are all fantastic. I particularly love the shot of Michelle Yeohs body holding the tiny green plant in the burned out greenhouse.

Great cast and the soundtracks owns.

The most disappointing part of Cats is that we didn't get to see Skimbleshanks do a full tap dance fight routine when the freed cats throw Growltiger into the Thames. You see him do some menacing tapping and then the scene is basically over.

Les Mis isn't the worst time I've ever had in a theater (The Producers--the Broderick one--or Terminator Salvation or maybe Extract would probably take that crown), but hoo boy, I knew I was in for two and a half hours of pain as soon as Russell Crowe started "singing." Sounded more like a bear defending its young. Hooper is a war criminal.

Yeah, it's really lovely. And the sound mixing is crazy bad. Most of the lyrics are indecipherable.

Jason Derulo's performance is outright terrible. He quietly whisper-sings, making it all feel restrained. Melodically, the original song is a simple catchy earworm, but the result in Hooper's film, it feels like 1/4 of a finished song, with the back-up vocals being the most fully realized.

Was Rum Tum Tugger inspired by Prince? The whole time I just kept thinking he was supposed to be Prince, and how strange and wonderful that would be. Nothing against Derulo, but it felt like they originally wanted Bruno Mars doing his Prince pastiche to be Rum Tum Tugger, and just had Derulo do a quieter version of that.

Supposedly Rum Tum is based on Mick Jagger, but the performance in the 98 taping and the original Broadway recording have so much Prince in them that I assume ALW only didn't name drop him to avoid getting sued.

I wonder if Hooper did the same dipshit thing on Cats as he did with Les Mis, insisting on all the singing being captured live on-set as the cameras are rolling, as opposed to having the actors lip-sync to recordings they had already done in a studio.

Jason Derulo’s best moment was the capital-S Singing he did during Magical Mr. Mistoffelees. Just visibly going for those really high notes while everyone else was trying to sing normally.

Rum Tum Tugger’s slap bass kept getting to me. So did the weird EDM break in the opening song.

Oh, the weird atonal synth bass drops that happened every so often were legitimately awesome, and fueled the horror of the film in an impressive way. It reminded me of an 80's Italian horror film.

She's in a terrible movie, and her character is an almost-silent audience surrogate whom most of the catsmembers want to seduce*, and I didn't understand any of the lyrics of her song, but I still walked away thinking she did her best and would like to see her in a better role.
