Please do not get so heated about the lighthouses. You can both make your arguments for 2 or 3 without jumping down each other's throats. Honestly, it is not something that requires you to bait each other.

OK so I'm the guy who keeps posting in this thread every few months about how my Quest used to be fine playing BeatSaber at launch and now I keep getting phantom misses bla bla bla but it has to be the Quest because it USED to work

I changed out my light fixtures in my office for unrelated reasons and now everything is MUCH brighter and more importantly, I stopped getting phantom misses. BeatSaber now plays just like it did on day one, and the only misses I get are when I very obviously lose controller tracking from doing some idiot ninja moves outside of the Quest's tracking cameras.

So no matter how much you think lighting may not affect your experience, definitely try playing in a brighter space before you try anything drastic with your headset.

I will say that I stand by the fact that it USED to work so I suspect maybe some tracking changes in the firmware made it more sensitive to lighting situations, but in the end the solution was to just increase ambient light.

I'm mainly posting this for anyone else who may find themselves in the same situation are are kind of stuck on the "it used to work so it has to be my headset" fixation like I was.

They have added features like christmas light avoidance, so I would assume they keep changing the technology and probably made it worse for your original circumstances in the process.

Can we at least agree that outside of bleeding edge vr gods that a normal person buying an index kit with two lighthouses should at least set up their room with the 2 that come with it and try it before premptively buying 1 to 2 more at $150 per lighthouse?

Or is that too reasonable :v:

I believe 3 lighthouses are better. no doubt

but like, that's a lotta money, man. 200$ Canadian scrums.

Do it if you want? It doesn't seem worth the 200$ upgrade considering the new lighthouses are 1/3 faster and more accurate than the OG lighthouses... which I have, and have never had an issue with tracking

but if you have money to piss out of your dick or vagina or cloaca then piss away

waiting to be told that I just never noticed my OG lighthouse tracking being the equivalent of a cloudy eyed sailor relaying my position through a broken telescope from a shaking crow's nest half a kilo away and my opinion is worth the cloaca piss I was talking about earlier

Apparently its not and the people who have never used the setup are the experts.

I'm super done here. You all would rather pile on than actually read posts. If you did, you'd see I've actually tried to explain why a third and potentially fourth IS worth the money and IS worth just getting done during initial setup.

Problem is, you're all thinking like 17 year old goons.

Some people can afford the 150 bucks. Nobody gives a poo poo if you couldnt/cant/dont want to. Sorry you may feel this is a lot of money.
Some people might not want to run wires again later. Breaking out a drill, ladder, etc AGAIN later isnt something I personally want to do either.
Some of you just wanna argue. Whatever.

You've all zeroed in on this 2 light house poo poo, and keep talking about "Doing it later" and "not spending extra money" and "my setups fine so everyone elses should be!". Nobody said "IM TRYING TO CUT COSTS". But thats like all you guys focus on. Not the actual use cases for having the third light house.

Anyways. I'm done with this thread at this point. Clearly only a few people really want actual use advice and the rest of you wanna just fire off your dick beaters for whatever reason.

Right and if you read my actual posts you'd know why a third and poo poo is worth it. 2.0 isnt magically better than 1.0 with 2. In fact, I personally found 1.0 with the sync cable was BETTER than 2.0 with no sync cable. You know, 2.0 can't have a sync cable right? Which means that third light house, really helps in situations where that sync cable was used before.

Nobody wants to think about any of that poo poo.

But hey! I'm wrong and you should never buy more than 2 light houses.

Glad we resolved that. Man it sucks I'm so stupid with this stuff. I should really read more. Wish I'd of known 2 was "fine" before I hung up my third.

OH well. I'm gonna just be over here with my lovely extra money setup that I shouldn't of done. Because its wrong. I sure wish I knew what I was talking about so I didn't make these mistakes.

Some people can afford the 150 bucks.

Yeah if you live in a major urban areas that's a rounding error on your monthly budget, not even trying to be snarky. If you're in a flyover state or live in Europe that might be a quarter of your monthly rent though.

I know people who pay a $500 premium on their annual credit card fee just so they can hang out in a private swanky lounge at the airport away from the plebians while waiting for their flight, and I know another goon who's been working at the same gas station for almost a decade and their $1500 gaming rig is the most valuable possession they own by a wide margin. And everything in-between.

There's a huge band of incomes in this thread and judging someone for throwing an extra $150 on their $1000 VR setup seems kind of silly.

Chronos is a dark souls like (like melee combat, dodging, low health with chugging a limited amount of health potions, checkpoints where you can teleport around) that is awesome and incredibly atmospheric. Remnant: From the Ashes is a direct sequel, if you've heard of that. Chronos's intro area is still one of my all time favorite VR experiences, the point where you get control of your character up until where you face the first enemy.

It's more that 1 lighthouse gives adequate tracking for 90% of people, and 2 is going the extra mile for quality. 3 is going pretty far into marginal cost/benefit since they're so expensive, unless you have a truly gigantic playspace.

Of course many adults have enough disposable income to spend on a high-end gaming rig, but after spending $1500 on a PC and $1000 on an Index and $300 on extra lighthouses and accessories, you're really sinking a lot of money into your Beat Saber experience that you might have enjoyed just as much without the gear porn. If you are a huge enthusiast for VR, knock yourself out with all the bells and whistles, because it truly isn't that expensive compared to fancy cars and international vacations. But if you're giving advice to people who aren't enthusiasts, adjusting it to "average user" instead of "power user" is a good habit.

Man if you think $3000 on a hobby is expensive maybe you should wander into the photography, travel, mountain bike, aviation, watches, classic car threads.

A good mountain bike these days will set you back way north of $4000. The floor for getting into serious flight simming is $3000 and generally requires hours of custom fabbing. This is just off the shelf stuff you can buy at Walmart or at least order it from their website.
