Snout is also seemingly entirely alone, existing with no community other than the squid eyeball thing from the library. It's really unclear what is holding him anywhere.

It would have made a lot more sense to portray Snout as being cowardly if he hadn't so willingly gone out of his way to find those pages, including going to places in the Wild Edge he had seemingly never gone to before and was unfamiliar with. Dude's been braving dangers and going to new places all this time but now he's scared to leave home?

With a better writer, "I tried to write a list of reasons to stay but they all pushed me to leave" could be a clever bit of writing it a subtle bit if writing showing something about the internal insecurities of the character, but this is Mookie.

SardonicTyrant posted:Wow, Snout has literally nothing going on in his life id this is what keeps him up at night. I mean, he did spend several days on a risky and pointless fetch quest, after his home was destroyed. Mookie didn’t write Snout with an actual established life. At the risk of writing DD fan fiction. This could have worked so much better if the ink witch’s abduction/home destroying happened after or near the end of the fetch quest. Have Snout get the reference to other libraries and look upset before continuing other research paths. Then have his home destroyed, then have the orc (cleaning up loss ends). And that’s it. Snout in cave, established that he does not want to leave, but motivated by mystery/revenge on orc, and no reason to stay now that home was destroyed

Yeah, agreed there. Story telling-wise, so many things were botched about the house destruction that it's totally neutered as a plot point: - The house looked pretty lovely inside with literally no furniture, the cave is basically identical - He found the cave almost immediately, and it appears comfortable and livable as far as Snout is concerned - Furthermore, he's making no attempt to build a new house and appears to be content to live in the cave forever - It's still super unclear as to WHY his house was destroyed - is the ship allied with the Ink Witch? Or did it kidnap her? - He didn't press the Ink Witch at all about the destruction of his house and spent most of his time looking for the pages instead of rebuilding his life Focusing it on the orc and the destruction of his house makes a lot more sense. As of now, Snout appears to not care about finding out who/why his house was destroyed, but is VERY concerned about finding out what happened to the pages and a guy that put a sleeping spell on him (so much for "hurting" him, huh?). I'd even go further and have there be some piece of dangerous knowledge that Snout accidentally learned, and now the orc is trying to find and kill him to make sure there's no trace of it, so he has to leave and research the rest of it (or at least find out who's trying to kill him so he can evade them).

I'm sure those soft ripe berries will be just fine banging around in a bindle with a hardcover diary. And even if they aren't, they'll probably wash right off those paper pages.

I wonder why, after not once going to a forest or even, I think, drawing a tree, would Mookie choose a dense forest as the scene to end the Wild Edge on.

It's really quite sad that his Twitter is full of crazy No Man's Sky alien landscapes he could take inspiration from and all he felt like doing for a wide shot of the the wild edge is... Some trees.

Have we reached the point where we are told why our presumed protagonist gives a drat about learning this story from 200 years ago? Like even when he was listing reasons to leave it mostly boiled down to "I have nothing better to do."

For being characterized as a dumb yokel Bort was always really violent, often unnecessarily. It's the one trait that differentiates him from the bland as hell Snout. Speaking of: Wanna stamp a big F on this page. No sense of relation between these panels and Snout journeying through them.
