Huh, I hadn't looked in a while but region-free players have really come down a lot in price. Are those sub-$200 Sony 4k UHD models actually any good?

I hung onto a lovely early DVD player for an unreasonably long time because some of those early models were easy to make region-free with technician codes or backdoors into the manufacturer settings, even though

I still own the only two strictly-DVD players I ever bought. The first is a bulky as hell RCA from 1998 that takes forever to load discs and has no region hacks. In 2001, I upgraded to the Philips DVP642, which was like the holy grail of region free players. That thing can play anything you throw at it.

Back when you could buy cheap 30 dollar DVD players in places in Walgreens it turned out that most of them were region free for some reason. I knew someone that had one and he told me it would just play any disc.

Chinatown VCDs are the most likely thing to play on DVD players because they stick to standards and are silver pressed discs. SVCD a little trickier (generally as I don’t think there much if anything in the way of official releases so would always be burns), then odd homebrew-y formats like mDVD and CVD were on the outside edge. I had a region modded Panasonic player that could do a really good job of weird formats as well as progressive component outputs and rca 5.1 output too.

I remember the days of having to buy specific brand blank discs in order for them to work.

Seriously, I expected it to look decent given it's never looked bad on digital and Warner's usual A+ remastering quality, but it really is jaw-dropping. And that's just on my normal-ish 60" display. It must be like a religious experience on a quality projection system.

Some recommendations:

Phantom Thread
2001: A Space Odyssey (from 8K scans of the 65mm camera negative and other elements)
Apocalypse Now
The Dark Crystal
The Big Lebowski
Casino

Probably a bit unlikely since there's a lot of 16mm in Koyaanisqatsi and Naqoyqatsi is supposed to look distressed (even stretching 4x3 video to 16x9 was on purpose instead of just laziness). The Criterion set looks and sounds incredible, though.

I'm surprised Baraka and Samsara aren't out yet considering they were scanned in 8K for the Blu-ray versions.

Yeah, UHD shines w film-based movies. Everyone already said what I’d recommend, but The Shining can’t be recommended enough. The opening helicopter shots are just insane.

The Shining was the most recent one that stood out to me. At first I didn’t think it was that special, but then I realized I was squinting anytime the camera showed a window with sunlight streaming in. There’s not any wizzbang special effects in the movie so nothing jumps out at you, but the overall presentation is so natural that the next thing you watch will look noticeably worse.

Saving Private Ryan is another one that hasn’t been mentioned yet. The contrast of the bright small fires with the dim grime everywhere at the end of the movie was amazing.

Also I remember the interior of the Nebuchadnezzar in The Matrix looking great; those overhead lights really popped.

I’m gonna have to disagree about Ghostbusters... The presentation of the material might be top notch, but the movie itself is extremely grainy and any of the composited special effects shots (which there are obviously a ton of) have an even more noticeable drop in film quality. I wouldn’t use this disc as showcase for the format unless the person is, like, heavily into film preservation or something.

I’m just saying it wouldn’t be my pick for a UHD showcase. Apparently the picture quality isn’t that much of a leap from the good Blu-Rays because there just isn’t that much more you can get out of it. Like with T2, the main reason I got it is because I didn’t already have the BR.

The handling of Prince's videos since his death is the biggest misstep his estate has made. They've put most of them up on YouTube, but not remastered and not all of them. Honestly if they got them all up to even 1080 there are plenty of people like me who would buy a disc full of them.

I wouldn't be surprised if I was way off but I figure the problem would end up being that a lot of the videos while still being shot on film were being edited on video so they'd have to go back to the original elements, re-edit everything and possibly even add updated HD effects, Star Trek: TNG-stlye?

I just want an archival-quality copy of the Batdance video in my collection, is that too much to ask?

You're not too far off. Some videos were shot on tape, like 1999. But most were shot on film, and it's going to vary from video to video whether it is edited on film or tape.

It's also something that costs money, and it depends on what material survives and who owns it.

I know it's been scoffed at here a few times when the subject of remastering from tape sources for blu-ray comes up, but it really does make a difference. I don't know the technical stuff behind it, but I've seen restorations of video derived footage on blu-ray and they look the better for it. Obviously we're not talking about reference quality footage here but it's the best things these have ever looked. Considering how much stuff Prince held onto and how fiercely protective he was of his work it's entirely likely his old videos were in his possession. I wouldn't be shocked if Warner Bros or whoever is cooking up a music video collection considering how much of his stuff has been rolling out the last couple years.

There's so much when it comes to remastering.

Video can be upscaled, color grading can make a huge difference, and you can get better encoding. You can mock it in principle, or you can look and see and make the right call based on each release.
