Fast swordies are fights where you're going to rely heavily on Buster and Leaf Shield. Basically, if they want to run at you on the ground you want to start pelting them with pellets, and if they try to jump on you Leaf Shield up and move under/into them to mess with their attempt to space you with aerials. Being in the air is bad, don't be in the air unless you're looking for a z-drop Metal Blade kill setup. You ruin basically every swordie but Marth/Lucina pretty badly off the level- any that has to recover low does not appreciate a Crash Bomb on the ledge, and you're one of the few characters who can mess with Chrom/Ike offstage without the risk of certain death, so make use of that.

Young Link's a tough matchup. He's fast, he out-zones you, bomb is a big bad problem for most of your stuff. You want to aggressively stay in pellet range and harass the ever-loving poo poo out of him because Young Link is far less scary when he's not using setup arrows/bombs to control the pace of the match. Remember- from pellet-range to about 1.5 Megamans out, you're frankly the best character in the game between pellets, slide, short hop f and b-air, and Metal Blade- and that's a range a lot of Young Links want to hang out in to try and set up until they realize they aren't going to land poo poo on you when everything gets interrupted by your nonsense. Let Young Link put himself in your preferred range and never let him leave.

Jesus, thank you very much for writing this up.
I've had a couple better FE atches just from staying on the ground more and going offstage after them more aggressively.

Your post really made me realise I haven't been using regular pellets effectively to interrupt everyone's poo poo, I've been relying more on the special projectiles and forward smash so I'm gonna work very hard on improving that.

Good morning!
As someone who mains a zoner (Samus), Young Link is a bitch to play. So far the best I've found is to keep a charge shot charged, because it's like having an ace up the sleeve that trumps all his arrow/boomerang bullshit. Maddening to get through all of that though. Lots of work to do on that matchup.

Pellets are unexciting but they really are why Mega Man is such a dominant character in mid-ranges. NOBODY likes fighting Mega Man from roughly a character length and a half out to the max range of his pellets. Even MM's worst matchups (Pikachu/Pichu, Mario, ROB IMO are the worst 3) are bad not because the opponent beats Mega Man in those ranges, but because they have ways to get around pellets and are very, very hard for MM to work around to get to re-establish mid-range control. Even ROB, who has probably the single best pellet answer in his Gyro would really rather not hang out in optimum pellet range but either get in and start poking at your feet or get back and set up top/laser and punish you as you try to approach around gyro instead.

You interrupt both action and movement, you force the opponent to take (in some cases drastic and unsafe) action to get through, and by cutting off places with dumb lemons you give yourself the ability to put the opponent in situations you'd rather they not be in. Get Shotos or Greninja into the air. Force swordies to overcommit to getting past your spacing to make theirs difficult. Put Mother Boys into their shield (or their absorb. Oh please Ness, absorb this pellet and SUFFER afterwards). Make all heavies regret life choices (like playing a heavy. Mega Man really, really dunks on heavies.)

There are matchups, for sure, where the better idea is to get Metal Blade in hand and forgo pellets, either because the opponent really has no real counterplay to Metal Blade setups (most hard zoners that are not some form of Link) or because pellets alone don't do a ton without first making the opponent respect you enough to not just run at you (Spacies, Shiek) but they're a real good tool to have in your belt for making the opponent get off their game because pellets to the face is insufferable.

Working my way up the GSP with my Banjo!

My favorite players to fight are any zoner-type characters, cause my rapid fire eggs really go to work and wall pretty much every type of projectile thrown my way while getting in some decent chip damage. The Belmont bros and all Link players tend to get really agitated by this and have to come to me with melee, but Kazooie tilt attacks usually come out quicker than their attacks so it's easy to rack up the damage before I can Wonderwing them to oblivion

Pokemon Sword and Shield, Daemon X Machina, Nintendo Labo...Well, there might still be a chance for a SwSh character after the pass. Even better if they're not making entire challenger packs for the post-pass fighters.

Also, we still don't have Fire Emblem: Three Houses Spirits, despite it coming out two months before Daemon X Machina and being an installment in one of Sakurai's favorite franchises. Of course, Astral Chain came out a month after 3H, so for all we know, the 3H Spirits will be added sometime after the next Direct.

Byleth doesn't even look at the battle going on. Instead every stage shows them in the background with their back to the camera getting some fishing time in, no matter the stage.

There's like 80 characters in this game, its cool that they're even adding anymore when they could have just called it a day with the default roster.

anyway I'm thinking that there might be a general nintendo direct soonish. It'd have an Animal Crossing update, probably saying what Pokemon Home is fully, and the last Smash Pass 1 character and then probably a teaser for Smash Pass 2's first character. Then that 2nd pass character would release around E3 with a teaser of the next one after that.

I don't really see it honestly. Byleth is the main character of the game and the story changes a lot depending on which House you go for, so it'd be like if they made a Nohr or Hoshido character the Smash rep instead of Corrin. Having them all as one character would be neat but seems unlikely.

Edie was at the centre of marketing for the game to a much bigger extent than Byleth was, so I think there's a decent shot she'd be the choice if they pick a Three Houses rep.

Yeah, people like to make a big deal about axe users over sword users but unless you get a big heavy axe user and make them a slow heavyweight, they're gonna end up playing the same as a sword user anyway. Maybe with an annoying tipper mechanic too since only the axe part is gonna hurt much.

That's why I'll always champion a spear over an axe. Ban-dan-a! Ban-dan-a! (for post-fighter pass)
