Some critic from the New Yorker listed The Dead Don’t Die as one of the best films of the year, which I can’t see at all from any angle. Even as someone who liked it more than a lot of others did it’s still at best “okay”

The Dead Don't Die is a waste of time. Also, The Beach Bum is incredible... if you wanna talk trash, look at Serenity - it tries so hard to be C R R R R R A Z Y but it's a huge embarrassment.

I just have it ranked so low on my 2019 list because Jarmusch has way more potential than what was delivered. I can't give him the same pass as I would for "Snow Buddies 3: A Dog Day For Santa Paws", because I just can't expect the latter to be any good. It's kinda how everyone was so quick to bash Velvet Buzzsaw, which would be considered fine and good if it weren't for the fact that it's the same director as Nightcrawler. And, you know, it's Jarmusch's first big Hollywood movie, so I'm sure it got hosed up for reasons he can't control.

Jarmusch had full creative control. He’s really focused on it. Focus financed and distributed but they left JJ to make the film he wanted. (I like his producer much more than I like JJ).

I can't imagine seeing the final cut of TDDD and thinking "Yes, this movie is exactly what I wanted. No issues with pacing at all. All of these jokes work. There is nothing lackluster or bizarre about the character arcs. The ending is satisfying."

Franchescanado posted:drat. Swing and miss for Jarmusch. Jarmusch has always had a very off-beat way of handling characters and pacing though. Which is a big part of why he's just not typically my thing. For instance, I love Westerns but his take on the genre(Deadman) just was too out there for me to really love it the way some other people do.

The only mitigating factor I can think of is that they may have had to hit a certain delivery date, but those are usually quite generous unless there is a specific event to be ready for, and in any event if a financier sees that a film needs more editing they usually recognise it’s in their interests to extend the due date. One of the things I dislike about him is that I think he is exactly that, self-indulgent.

Hello CineD I'm laid up from a lovely cold or flu or something and just want to issue a public service reminder that if you go through two Jumbo bags of cough drops a day like I do, getting the Sugar Free kind is a really bad idea because you'll be gassed up and Jackson-Pollocking the work bathroom on the reg. I really hated G:KotM, I thought the monster fights were bad and felt weightless, they gave me no sense of scale or place. Maybe it's just the director, I really hated Krampus too.

I didn't mind Krampus but I am absolutely baffled over peoples' insistence that Trick 'R Treat is some sort of canonical classic. It's perfectly fine. Dylan Baker's always a delight I will admit, though.

Maybe if I can figure out a google poll thing like Trix mentioned, but otherwise, that idea is tabled for now. HOWEVER It's a new year for Movie of the Month! If you'd like to host a Movie of the Month thread, please PM me or hit me up on Discord. You don't need to have a movie in mind to apply. It's based more on availability. Preference goes towards goons that haven't hosted one before, and are relatively active in CineD. I have my short-list of goons who are willing to be repeat offenders, but if you think I've forgotten, feel free to contact me. edit: If you're curious about what movies can be applicable for a Movie of the Month, here are my only guidelines: -No pornography. -Nothing currently in theaters -Nothing that currently has a thread -Preferably a film that hasn't been MotM before.

I wonder if we, at least temporarily, added a requirement that the MotM had to be available for free on a major streaming service, there might be more participation in the threads?

It's a legitimate question. I don't know. I've thought about different ways to get participation up in them besides spamming threads that they're there. Our current pick, Dead Ringers, is available on Amazon Prime, TubiTV for free, Kanopy for free, Pluto TV for free, and since it's a Criterion DVD, would be readily available for rental at a library. It's about as widely available as it's gonna get besides being on YouTube or Netflix, which has me scratching my head.

This is where I’m at with Trick r Treat, too. There are a lot of horror movies that are set on Halloween, but TrT is explicitly about Halloween in a way they aren’t. It’s the cinematic equivalent of one of those spooky sound effects tapes you used to get at Hallmark. It also doesn’t hurt that it breezes by in like 82 minutes and never outstays it’s welcome.
