The 1967 film was nominated for nine Academy awards (including Best Picture) and won two of them  (20th Century Fox spent a ton of money rigging the nominations) The film's IMDB trivia page is a hell of a ride: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0061584/trivia?ref_=tt_ql_2 Sammy Davis Jr campaigned hard for the role of Bumpo in the film but star Rex Harrison vetoed him on account of him being an "entertainer" (ie: someone who could actually sing and would definitely show him up) but SDJ got his revenge by releasing a hit album where he covered all the songs in the film. Edit: ah ha ha ha ha the new RDJ film only opened yesterday here in Australia but all the cinemas in my area have already dropped the prices on every session

Slicing the gently caress out of a Dr Dolittle film to make it bearable for audiences is a venerated Hollywood tradition! The '67 film rated really poorly with the first test audiences who complained that it was too long so they ripped out chunks of it, but test audiences still complained it was too long so they ripped out a few more chunks, then the third batch of test audiences went "Uh it's fine I guess?" so they went with that relatively trim 152 minute cut. I watched a very good chunk of the '67 on when I was a kid. Mostly I was intrigued that it was on 2 VHS tapes. I thought it was good at the time, and I dunno, I still like goofy movies of that period. Never did have high hopes for this one though. On an interesting side note. Ranulph Fiennes tried to blow up the dam they built for the town in the original one with plastique he'd neglected to turn in. And because this was the 60s, didn't go to prison for it.

Looks like Shane Carruth is getting out of the game after his next project. Can't say I'm surprised based on his success rate in the industry, it's got to be incredibly frustrating to battle uphill agains the Hollywood franchise machine and lack of mid-budget greenlights if you're a guy who just wants to make small, interesting, and thoughtful genre flicks. It's especially a shame that A Topiary had such a low budget and still couldn't find funding (even if I found the script fairly impenetrable a few years ago), but it's always notable to see when these sorts of guys burn out of the industry. At least he seems to have a good head on his shoulders when it comes to what he wants to do with the rest of his life

Sergio Corbucci has said MLK Jr. and Malcom X both being assassinated is what inspired him to make it. It's insane to me that the guy that directed The Great Silence and Django also directed some incomphrensibly bad stuff like The White, The Yellow, and the Black/Samurai and stuff like that. I'd try to get it with the Italian dub with English subtitles. The English dub is very accurate but some of the voice choices just feel kind of off. Folks here might also dig Four of the Apocalypse, one of three westerns directed by Lucio Fulci. Also after you watch The Great Silence, look up the alternate ending on YouTube because  a sad last ditch attempt to try to get it released in the US. It ended up not officially coming out in the US until 2001!

Yea I posted about The Great Silence in the Western thread a few weeks ago, I just recently saw it for the first time. There are plenty of Westerns that have relatively bleak endings but nothing like that. It was seriously impressive actually, the nerve required to go through with that ending.
