I totally forgot that some of the girls from the actual Bling Ring had a reality show until the first post about it here. Just seeing the title caused that useless fact to crawl out of the swamp on my mind fully formed.

Has anyone else watched Giri/Haji (duty/shame) on Netflix? Its a bbc made show, that takes place both in Britain and Japan with both english and japanese spoken (english subs). Main plot, a Japanese detective (Takehiro Hira) is sent to London to look for the killer of the nephew of a Yakuza boss, but has to do so under the auspices of a attending a forensic training taught by a british detective (Kelly Macdonald). It's eight episodes that mixes in anime, jumps in time and location. I don't even want to spoiler tag the end, because I didn't see it coming, but I think it was actually great? Curious what others thought.

I must be the only person that likes all of Girls. I wouldn’t call it great and it did have dip in quality, but I enjoyed every season of it.

Also when Entourage was released it was a pretty positive reviewed show, and everyone seemed to like it. I really thought Kevin Dillon’s character was fun during the early seasons. That said around the time Sasha Grey showed up the backlash against it started. I did try to watch an episode in the last year or so, and it was painful. It is amazing how you can enjoy something 15 years ago, and now think it is complete trash.

I agree, I watched it all the way through too. Although, I think what made the show great early on was the friendships, and the show really suffered in the later seasons when pulled away from that. Plus, the character choices they made with Marnie and basically making her a sociopath were absolutely bewildering.

There was a point around the time when they aired two seasons back to back that all of my friends would come over every Sunday to watch the show. And I don't even remember when, but we all just stopped watching the show and never returned. It went from being our favorite, to completely insufferable.

That was pretty intense, huh?

I forced myself to finish Witcher because I like Henry Cavill, but man, what a let down. The narrative structure the writers chose was weird. It felt like they were trying real hard to be smart by jumbling up the timelines, but it all just felt like a silly mess to me tbh. It was as if they wanted to wow me with story revelations/twists once they were revealed, but it all just ended up being super frustrating to watch.

The supporting cast is also really bad imo. I haven't played the games or read the books, but I feel like Yennefer and Ciri were miscast; they were fine, but I think those roles could've been played up much more with better actors. Still, Yennefer is a badass and I like the character. Hopefully season 2 is better. The only really good episode out of this first season was the one where Geralt fought the striga imo. Everything else was pretty bad.

Family.
I thought the actress who played Yennifer was fine, but I do think it's weird that they chose an actress who has only been in 8 episodes of TV to be a lead in a series opposite Henry Cavill. I'm guessing they spent 90% of the budget on Cavill.

The roles for Yennefer and Ciri felt a bit too meaty for the actresses who were cast imo. They were alright I guess, but every other secondary and tertiary character delivered some of the most boilerplate/overacted performances that largely fueled my disinterest. Cavill and the bard guy were consistently great though.

It's weird to me they chose an actress almost 15 years younger than Cavill. Like, she's barely out of high school. I haven't read the books but in the games Yennifer has the look of someone in her mid 30's. I guess that's just hollywood though.

It was a struggle for me to get through to be honest. I started and stopped the first 3 episodes a handful of times without finishing them for nearly a month before committing to actually watch them all the way through. Once I got over that hump, I was pleasantly surprised by how legit good the third episode was after watching it from start to finish, but then everything after that episode was just ehhhhhh....

The Witcher isn’t amazing, yeah. Maybe it’ll get there? Seems like they’re taking the long view.

I was about to cancel Netflix again and move on to the next streaming service for a while, but then I see Better Call Saul S4, Narcos Mexico S2, and Locke & Key are dropping soon...

I’m watching Narcos Mexico right now and it’s OK. It’s not as compelling as the first two seasons of Narcos because Pablo Escobar was the most outrageous and extravagant drug lord of all time (I kinda hope we never top that guy) but at least the Mexican setting is a bit novel.

If you're enjoying it, stop watching it on Netflix like Right now and go watch it at Hidive or Funimation. The version you're getting has all episodes cut off in half (plus you get the option of a dub if you so prefer)

Just watched this. The plot is a loving mess, but it's pretty fun with good action and a snappy pace. I became progressively less horrified by the anime face as time went on. The only major complaint I have is that it felt like they were setting up a franchise instead of just making a movie and we don't even get a glimpse into the sky city and the villain is (barely) set up in the final minutes. Like they were just banking on it being the next marvel universe or something and now we don't even know if it's getting a sequel. Don't do that, Hollywood. Make complete movies please.

Alita: Battle Angel is written as a self contained narrative that sows the seeds of a potential sequel. The film appears to close at the midpoint of an overarching narrative with all the Nova stuff, but he's really treated more as a tertiary villain in the movie next to the likes of Vector/Grewishka/Chiren. The film itself is a fully structured story with complete character arcs, and an ending sequel hook. There's a difference between what Battle Angel did and doing what Universal did with Dark Universe.

That said, yes, Cameron did intend for there to be multiple Alita films, but when RR took on restructuring the shooting the script, he was careful to ensure that he told a complete story first, but also kept in elements that are primed for a possible sequel... which could happen still! Alita didn't do like super amazing numbers at the box office, but it 100% over-performed compared to expectations—nearly every media outlet was predicting it to flop—and has sold well on digital and blu-ray apparently.

My guess (hope) is that any Alita sequels or an Alita series likely won't be greenlit by Disney, but instead Cameron and Rodriguez will maybe shop the franchise around to other studios/platforms for distribution.

By cut in half do you mean they don’t replay the episode with different voice actors?

I think there are a few more differences but they were never anything I cared all that much about.

but, uh... well, there it is

I just watched Alita last night on HBO Go and I really enjoyed it. My only real complaint about it is that I think they should have cast someone a little more charismatic as the love interest. Rosa Salazar does a fantastic job as Alita.

I hope this gets a sequel because I need to see more of anime villain Edward Norton.

Yea Alita just doesn't work without Rosa Salazar's performance. In a movie like that where there's so much over the top action and bizarre happenings, you really need to make me care about the protagonist and she knocked it out of the park.
