star trek tumblr is completely different than star trek elsewhere.

a lot of you will go "it's all slash" but amazingly yeah of course that's there, but the bread and butter of star trek tumblr is observations framed as shitposts. it is very odd and huge fun.

Ideas for content: What is something you've always wanted to know about Star Trek Tumblr. If like me you're just learning that it exists you can come up with something you just now want to know.

For example, how large is star trek tumblr? Are these people going to eventually fandom their way into some kind of spinoff show or congressional lobby?

It's worth finding the post that has some additional information, it turns out the person who constructed those went on to work on the costumes on the PBS show Barney

They also threw candy jizz into the crowd, But if I recall, only at the second appearance which was a tribute to the original appearance by fans of the first penis dance

For sure, I will be your ambassador.

One of the odd qualities of Tumblr is that you are expected, even encouraged, to have separate side blogs for different interests. So for example, in the above post that discusses the Worf lunchbox, there is a "ds9shameblog". That is specifically a side blog of a very talented and respectable artist who works in the industry.

However, some people post most if not all of their content on their main blog, especially if the arent into any specific thing enough for fandom-specific side blogs. Usually everyone has a main blog that's sort of a grab bag and includes personal stuff.

I say that because that means that there's kind of two clumps, the people who care about it enough to have Star Trek specific side blogs, and people who just repost Star Trek things because they like them enough for them to show up periodically on their main blog.

I would say the number of people who have the specific side blogs is fairly small, but the number of people who like it casually enough to repost something particularly funny is extremely high. So things that are extremely niche for Star Trek can get about 600 or 700 posts, but something that's more general interest Star Trek might get 30-60,000. Posts also circulate indefinitely and it's not obvious how old any specific post is.

It is impossible to find anything specific, the hashtags barely work, and really most people are only able to organize where any particular thing is by re-blogging it to an empty side blog, using their own specific tagging system, or literally just making a post that says, hey, does anybody have a link to (whatever)? It is honestly way less functional of a website than something awful itself.

So, a word from your tumble liaison officer:

- You can "like" a post or "reblog" a post
- You can add hashtags to your post to make them findable on your blog or findable in a broken general search (which among other things only searches your first 5 hashtags)
- Ostensibly, when you reblog, and wish to add a comment, you'd add your comment at the bottom. It's designed to do this.
- This often made posts and comment chains too long, so unless your comment is really good, it's culturally expected that your comments are in the hashtags
- You can't see the hashtags someone adds to your reblogged post unless you use a third-party hashtag viewer, so you can't easily see other people's comments to your posts on default tumblr.
*There's a more different comments feature but nobody uses it because then usually you can see comments but it's a hassle for other people.
- When you see a "like" or receive a message, it's from that person's main blog. You can change which blog is designated as your main blog as often as you want. It mostly only matters to the extent that people can recognize you by your likes versus what you might be reblogging on a side blog, or posting on a side blog.
- If a hashtag post is funny or you want to reply to a hashtag you've seen, the cultural expectation is you will "#quote the hashtag #verbatim with the hashtag #intact" OR you will take a SCREENSHOT of the hashtags and insert that into your reblog as an image and then post your comment in text under that

So, if you see:

then here's what's actually going on:

- Aphidmaster posted a picture of an aphid with a caption under it. That's the limit of what aphidmaster has done here.
- Some person whose name will not appear reblogged aphidmaster's aphid picture and added in their hashtags "#thats a #good aphid"
- And fronkle reblogged the third party (whose hashtags otherwise will NOT be viewable in the reblog), copy+pasted the hashtags from the third party into the text field, and replied to them in text.

You could find who this person #3 was by looking through the Notes on the post, and potentially fronkle may have reblogged directly from them in which case you'd see who they reblogged it from, BUT only if you are seeing fronkle's actual reblog. If a fourth party reblogs fronkle, then you will not see who fronkle reblogged the post from any longer. Furthermore, fronkle might have grabbed the hashtags from the hashtag viewer and reblogged aphidmaster directly if they so chose.

This is clearly insane, but it is necessary to understanding some tumblr chains.
