For any fellow Caspian nerds, they have a podcast now! It's just a few episodes about the behind the scenes stuff from the new album, but yeah.

I've had this thread bookmarked for like 2 years and never trawled through it because its like 130 pages but on a lark i decided to catch the last two and suddenly I discover:

New Russian Circles
New Godspeed
New Caspian
New 65DOS

...how.. I... what is happening? Did I die? I've really been trying to get back into music lately, I basically haven't listened to anything new since I moved to the deep South years ago and found the live music scene in Myrtle Beach to be basically non-existant. Woohoo I got a lot of music to hunt down.

Did I miss a new EITS album? I'm on their mailing list so i imagine not.

Music is typically the first thing I lose when starting a new relationship. I’ve only ever had one partner who enjoys post-rock/metal the way I do (as loud as possible while cheefing as hard as possible) and my last girlfriend only listened to 90’s dad rock so I’ve seriously not had a real Rock Sesh in probably close to 3 years. Closest I’ve come is some kickass Neil Young solos while riding my bike but it’s... it’s just not the same.

it seems a bit hosed up that your partners don't allow you to listen to the music you like.

It’s not that they don’t allow me to it’s that I don’t wanna make that our shared living space uncomfortable for the person I care about by completely annihilating their eardrums with music that they aren’t into.

Good Av/post combo.

What do you consider "90's Dad rock"? The only things that come to mind for me were holdover stuff from the previous decade like Aerosmith and Guns N Roses.

I’m in my car for about 4 hours a day at work, I got plenty of time to listen to podcasts and music alone, plus I spent then entire decade of my 20s going to shows and festivals, I’m not worried about it.

She loveloveloves The Red Hot Chili Peppers and...’I dunno that’s honestly about it? Maybe some Nirvana here or there. She’s extremely noise sensitive and prefers to sit in complete silence most of the time when she’s not watching make-up tutorials or trash TV. Music just isn’t really a big part of her life. It’s one of the many reasons our relationship improved when she moved out. Her house is quiet as a church mouse, my house sounds like a plane is crashing in slow motion, and we love each other in spite of these differences.

The only partner I’ve ever had that really liked this music was into even heavier stuff than I was. I handled my Isis/Pelican/Desert Sessions phase in college and was like “ok this stuff is fine but I’m not facing imminent death so I need something a little lighter”. She preferred Opeth and Sun (((O))) and Neurosis. We fell in love over a long car ride from Philly to DC heading to a rave, she asked me to grab a CD from her booklet and I flipped through the entire Russian Circles discog and I was like “drat dude you are hip” and she was like “whoa boys never like good music”. That was a fun couple years :unsmith:

Grunge/post-grunge/90's Alternative is considered "Dad rock" now? Yikes. I'm not a big fan of RHCP but I do like a lot of stuff from that era and hearing similar acts being called Dad Rock is deeply disturbing. Aging sucks I guess.

I listen to music nearly every day in the car, but I go through periods ranging from several weeks to several months without putting on anything from my personal library. Minus once a week when I do laundry - I crank the tunes (reasonably, I share an apartment with others) when I fold the clothes or make the bed. Sitting in silence doesn't sound horrible to me!

I'm listening to this, because I wanted to freshen up my ears before I really dig in to Caspian's new record.

I'm sure this conversation has been had in the thread before, but how often do you listen to a new Post-Rock artist that you've never heard of before and thought "I've heard this before"? Does it happen a lot?

There are certain bands, like Caspian, that really push and pull their music around in a way that is deeply uniquely them, and then there's stuff like God is an Astronaut, where I just for the life of me cannot tell any of their songs across the five of their albums I own apart, and then there's stuff like We Lost The Sea where I'm like "Ok this is good, I am digging this" but I also can't shake the feeling that these musicians have all clearly been listening to the same 50 records that I have for the last decade lol. Like I'm not accusing them of ripping anyone off, but does anyone else feel like this genre is, as a whole, deeply homogeneous, with the various extreme outliers like 65DoS being the ones that rise to the top? Like there are at least really obvious lineages at work, but beyond "Most of these bands want to be Explosions in the Sky, some of them want to be Do Make Say Think, and the rest are coming for This Will Destroy You's lunch money" I can't really articulate it because I'm not like a music guy...

I'm not trying to imply that those three bands invented post rock or aren't copying other bands, at all, I'm just saying those are the three main branches that I can see across all my different Post-Rock records.

for content: my favorite band in this genre that I found on my own is My Education. They are based in Austin, TX, which I'm frankly convinced has something in the water that makes you super shoegazey guitar nerd.

Yeah a lot of post rock bands have a really specific sound, but it's not always a bad thing. God is an Astronaut is super samey whereas Jakob and Russian Circles have a tone or whatever that repeats in a lot of their stuff.
