Despite everything, I still like a lot of things about Mass Effect

The Geth are a really cool take on battle droids

Biotics were so overpowered in ME 1 to the degree of being able to lift Geth Collosi and shoot them to death with souped up explosive ammo shotguns.

ME 2 must be the best goddamn game I have ever played along with FN:NV.

ME 3 was okay, the Citadel DLC is still kinda dumb that you throw parties when the universe literally burns but the gunplay and powers were better.

Never played Andromeda, will probably try the new ME despite how bad it will be.

The combat in Andromeda was top notch, but the character animations, characterisation and plot fell flat in a way that prevented a lot of people from really getting invested in the new characters the way they did Shep, Garrus, Wrex and Liara. The writing team wasn't as strong as the ME 1/2 team, and, and while it was at least as good as ME3, that was the weakest of the series. They really needed a stronger start.

The game mechanics were fine, but it just didn't draw you in the way the first two games did, and ME3 benefitted significantly from the first and second game's work in establishing the main cast. Andromeda didn't have that advantage. It didn't have much replay value, and it also really didn't help that bioware wouldn't even stand by their product and cancelled planned DLC like a month in.

Yeah that’s fair. The combat was the best in the series, I think I cut the writing a lot of slack because thinking back on Mass Effect 1 I don’t think I really cared for the characters all that much back then except Tali, all the work of making them memorable and likable felt like it was done in ME2. While the characters in Andromeda didn’t impress me too much I felt like it was at least on the level of ME1 and thought they were a solid base to build on in the next game.

The story also could have been more tightly plotted but I liked the relatively small scope of it, trying to protect this small colonization effort was a lot more engaging to me than Galactic Space Opera #877 so I think I was willing to overlook the minute-by-minute faults. Either way I hope this rumored new ME game builds on Andromeda instead of scrapping it

I liked the multiplayer in 3 enough that I pre orderd Dragon Age Inquisition because the multiplayer looked similar.

It was a large mistake.

But this isn't a forum for games this is a forum for sci-fi, so I'm gonna talk about the sci-fi. The sci fi was okay but honestly now that I'm thinking back none of it really stands out as amazing.

mass effect 2 correctly realises it's not a space opera and takes its grim, miserable setting and turns it into a Die Hard video game, with gameplay that complements that. mass effect 3 then proceeds to flail around in circles for 30 hours trying to make up its mind between the two and then trips over itself at the end for spectacular comedic effect

from what i've seen of andromeda it's a way better take on the genre but is not particularly good as a game, but also it having the mass effect brand attached to it did nothing positive or useful for it in either case

I never played Andromeda, but I recall hearing about how the Citadel races set up a museum that teaches a very white washed version of their history to the Andromeda races, and that sounded like a really cool idea.

Mass Effect was basically the Star Wars of video games, it took a bunch of disparate stuff that came before it (in this case shooters and roleplaying games) and synthesized them into something that could achieve something new while paying homage to its influences at a time when technology reached the point that it could set the standard for blockbusters that would follow.

Also like Star Wars the second one was objectively the best.

ME3 presaged the sequel trilogy. Couple of neat set pieces, wraps up one or two story arcs nicely, but it ends up being an incoherent mess because no one had any real clue what they were doing or what the story was ultimately going to be about

jolly good chaps we sure showed the hun

the ends are fine. the biggest problem is, like the sequel trilogy, EA/Disney forcing releases of undercooked first draft material to fit a schedule

the second biggest problem is Bioware's cringing-dog approach to audience responses and feedback leading to dishonest and schizophrenic storytelling. hmm, also familiar...

Didn’t they rewrite the whole ending because the script leaked? iirc the original actually involved the dark matter/dying suns thing that got brought up a few times in ME2

Expectation is the biggest enemy of any nerd-focused media because when your audience is people who build their personality around media nothing you put out can fill the yawning chasm in their soul that is chasing the dragon of being 12 playing games without a care in the world. It's why the only games that really truly hit hard are ones that sneak in under gamers' defenses like Portal or Undertale, while anything that has half a decade of build up and :speculate: will never live up to it.

The series went to complete and utter poo poo with the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC. Idiotic, self-referential writing focused on solving mysteries that didn't need answering, and waves of enemies dropping in on your head in lieu of actual set piece design. Everything before it is great, everything after just garbage that I'm still mad about nearly 8 years later.
