After easing off of horror movies a bit post-October I want to dive back in again. I was thinking of doing a remakes theme, so what are the best or most underrated horror remakes? (Besides the obvious ones like The Fly, The Thing, Halloween II)

Oh yeah. Seconding Suspiria, Blob, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. And Ring I guess. For as many times as I've watched Night of the Living Dead I should really rewatch the remake. All I remember is the ending.

Seconding the Maniac remake. Really disturbed me the first time I saw it. Really impressed with Elijah Wood on that one, and how well the cinematography and direction made me feel implicit with the crimes I'm watching.

Probably a prime example of the kind of movie that is perfect for a remake, because there was actually room for improvement.

(No rape, but it’s pretty rough.) I can understand someone not wanting to re-watch it, but it at least deserves one viewing. I wanted to rewatch it after Come To Daddy. Unearthed Films "Too Extreme For Mainstream #2" review Unearthed Films 2nd outing in their "Too Extreme For Mainstream" series is Deep Web XXX and it is a hot piece of garbage. The plot follows a fat dude as he watches a bunch of weird deep web videos. That's it. That's the story. The vignettes are just hardcore BDSM porn for the most part or weird sex rituals. None of it is horrific except for the lack of consent in a lot of them. I'm really dissapointed in this series tbh. It's less of a horror series and much more of a "how can we trick horror fans into watching buttholes". The worst part is when there is finally a horror-themed short, the FX are terrible. For a company that prides themselves on gore/splatter/SFX showcase films, this couldn't be more far from what fans what. Don't even waste your time.

Gretel and Hansel doesn't suck. It bears no relation to the goofy Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters movie from 2013. This is a much quieter film, that's more about tension, mood and relationships. The story begins with Gretel (Sophia Lillis) and her much younger brother Hansel (Samuel Leakey) being throw out of their house by their deranged mother after Gretel refuses a house-keeping position with a lecher who had more than a passing interest in the state of Gretel's hymen. They travel through the creepy woods and meet a huntsman who feeds them, lets them bathe (unmolested) and gives them directions to find "The Foresters" where the two can perhaps work for food. Gretel will even get the chance to learn herbs and the like, so she won't have to earn her money on her back. This is not a time or place that is kind to women or children. Ultimately, after growing hungry and tired again, they see a house in the distance. Through a window Gretel spies a table heaping with food. And so they meet the Witch. A different movie would play up the "children in danger" aspect and that aspect is present, but the usual "good vs evil" conflict is a bit more evenly matched this time. While Hansel's use to the Witch is pretty obvious, Gretel has the potential for "witchiness" herself. And the Witch wants to teach Gretel. So, there's a kind seduction at play that has little to do with sexuality. It's a kind of... maternal seduction. Beyond that, the Witch is offering Gretel Power and Choice at a time when most women have little of either. So when a frightened Hansel wants to leave, it's understandable that Gretel doesn't really want to return to a world where her main choices will boil down to drudgery or prostitution. One neat little scene is the one in which Gretel has her period. Nothing is said. Lillis looks under her sheets and the next scene is her quietly washing them and her bedclothes. No jokes are cracked. No comments made. It's a nice bit of subtlety in a movie that really does do a pretty good job of "show, don't tell." It falls apart a bit at the end, but still concludes on a note of hopeful if slightly ominous ambiguity.
