Yesterday I picked up the Steel Grey Breton horse and rode it around today. Overall I was not impressed and missed my Marble Cirollo. Managed to hit Moonshiner 20 today and picked up the Tricolor Norfolk Roadster. Already feels much better than the Breton. Not sure if I'll get enough cash together by the 10th to take advantage of the discount and grab one of the Kladrubers, but it would be nice to compare all the specialist horses.

I just bought a Norfolk Roadster (one day before it went on sale lol) and yeah it's a real solid horse, feels kind of like a Turkoman but a little more skittish around gunfire. It's faster on paper though it weirdly doesn't feel that fast to me.

It's a good horse.

I use a Black Arabian.

Superior Handling. Skittish as all hell. 9 Speed/Acceleration.

Low profile and black so it and I blend in pretty well, especially at night. So it feels like a good PvP horse for my playstyle.

I have found at certain times that the server population is low enough that animals spawn on the constant on Xbox. So now I do my hunting at around 12est and then my dailies in the morning when I get up so I can hit up the trade route when it pops.

RDR2 is in a lot of ways probably as far as Houser could go with video game stories. It kind of takes the motifs running through RDR and GTA (Bad guy trying to find absolution, cults of personality, the American dream) and actually finally said something meaningful.

My fear is that there will be enough people to keep Rockstar Games as the Frumpy-Sad-People simulators that I love.

I had a coupon for a free horse but didn't have stable space for it, so I got rid on that first horse you get only to find out that "free horse" requires you be a trader and that costs 15 gold bars (which I do not have)

Can you keep wild horses you tame in online? I tamed one but was killed before I could get to the stable and lost it, just wondering if it's worth trying to get another or am I screwed and have to re-buy or just put up with the scrawny nag that comes when I whistle until I can afford to become a trader?

You can't capture wild horses and make them your own.

The free horse isn't that much better than the scrawny nag, it's misleading because it has the same name as a good horse.

Save for an Arabian, it's fast and will last you a while until you hit rank 20 in one of the roles and can buy that role's unique horse.

you can keep them as long as the next transition screen i think. otherwise when you whistle you'll get the scrawny nag if you dont have any available. unfortunately you gotta buy them. you should be able to get a decent one for a few hundred bucks which isn't hard to grind out at all.

edit: arabians are super fast but really jumpy in a fight or around predators. my turkoman isn't afraid of anything and the fox trotter is a nice middle ground. i think they're all around $900? they might all be level locked too

I can't recommend the Criollo (lvl20 collector version) enough. It's fast as gently caress and while people said it was more skittish than the other 2 role breeds, in my experience it's been a rock. I literally walked mine on top of a rattlesnake on purpose and she just whinnied a bit, same as when I got charged by a grizzly bear or chased by 3 wolves. She's easily spooked by gunfire, but if you're on the saddle she won't buck you off for just that (yeah she might die due to not having maxed out health at full bond, but still, any horse will die after eating 10 bullets and it's generally better to dismount for huge firefights)

The only annoying thing is that when you get off, unless you hitch her, she tends to wander around and you have to whistle for her or chase her down, but I can definitely live with that.

A lot of those horses require a pretty high level I think, but there's nothing wrong with any of the low level horses when you're just starting out.

The Tennessee Walker, Mustang, Hungarian Halfbred and Thoroughbreds are all good horses in their own right, in my experience.

FuturePastNow
May 19, 2014

I didn't find the Criollo more skittish than the other role horses, in fact its personality seemed to be a copy and paste of the Breton's.

I recommend ignoring the speed stats the game shows you. There just isn't that much difference once you've got a good saddle and stirrups. Instead, try to maximize the health and stamina. The Criollo is good if you want a good smaller horse, but all the role horses are good for this, as is anything that costs over about $500.

I don't recommend an Arabian unless you're ok with having a horse that's scared of everything. They are beautiful cowards.

If you're new and poor, see if you have any of the roles available for free (I could start Collector free, for example) and get one of the $150 low-end role horses early, which I think will give a nicer riding experience than the starter horse or the $250 Arabian.

Thanks for the horse tips friends, I have 10 bars from the 2FA thing but didn't want to blow them on anything as I was trying and save them to buy into one of the rolls.

I keep going to do the dailys to earn a bit of extra gold but is there always a fishing task? last 2 days its mentioned catching fish and I just discovered you can only get the rod at level 14...

but I might try see if I can be a bounty hunter instead if that's free. From what I've read the GTA online crossover thing to get a free collector bag is console only because R* seems to have a raging hate boner for PC, we don't seem to get the "$5 for 25 gold bars first purchase" thing either.

As much as I want to get the outlaw pass I can't bring myself to give these fuckers any money.

Honestly the outlaw pass and to a lesser extent the criminal Enterprise starter pack for GTAO are probably the best things to spend your actual money on. The values for gold bars are marginally okay but I have a hunch that eventually price inflation will do the same thing to the RDO economy as it did to the GTAO economy. The shark cards are so laughably bad at this point and desperately need a rebalance pass based on the current economy, but it'll never happen because the whales keep rockstar happy.

e: It's worth noting that the Outlaw Pass will give you back your forty gold bars in a couple weeks of moderate play, and after a few more weeks of doing daily challenges after that I'm sitting on like 60+ of the drat things. Can't wait for the next outlaw pass tbh

Also worth noting that once you get the ball rolling on RDO, you can just grind gold bars for a couple months and get forty together to buy an Outlaw Pass with no real money spent. I’ll admit I bought my first one to get as much XP and rewards from the get-go, but with daily challenge gold flowing in daily, it just makes sense to start saving.

You can gather gold bars so quickly if you play lightly. When I first came back to online at the end of December (hadn't played since launch) I had 40 because I guess they gave them out or something. I bought the outlaw pass immediately and with the first ten I got back I bought the discounted trader role, then collector, then bounty hunter and then finally the discounted moonshiner and that's with playing a tiny amount a day to keep my streak going. I still have 60 bars. I wish I could buy the old outlaw pass, just to keep my interest up. I'd pay 50 for it too.

Moonshiner seems to be a huge money sink, everything even the first tier upgrades cost like 700-800$ minimum. And the money you make back for the effort is frankly ridiculous and insulting.

Other roles at least had relatively low costs for the early upgrades like 300$ which is a lot more reasonable and "saved" the truly expensive ones for the higher tiers, and trader and collector make you rich a lot quicker (esp. Collector if you abuse the online collector's map, in a day you can easily complete a few collections and make a thousand $ if you don't mind walking around all day, with literally no investment beside starting the role, and that only gets better once you have the shovel and metal detector)

You're absolutely right. I think the missions are pretty ok and and ranking up the Moonshiner role gives you more options to earn gold, which can really stack up once you get a streak going. The actual cash payout, however, is poo poo.

I've mentioned it many pages ago, but the level of detail, especially in single player, is insane and I've seen many new things on replays. For example, Arthur will cry if your horse dies at max level bonding when you go over to the body and pick up the saddle. That one gets me.
