The games magazine (!) I subscribe to described it as a game you should probably play if you're a real big Terminator fan and probably not if you're not. A lot of love towards the franchise in there and that's the main reason to play it since yeah, mechanically it's quite plain and somewhat dated.

I'm looking for recommendations of a game that's hack-and-slash-ish, and that has ridiculous over the top attacks that are bright and colourful and full of lasers or explosions or similar. I just bought Van Helsing, for example, because a Diablo-like would be good (As opposed to a Devil May Cry-like), but it's not over the top enough and the game systems (Level-up stats, skills, etc.) are a bit too involved for me to want to put the time in to get it to "Holy poo poo this is awesome". I've generally played all of the well-known hack-and-slash games, so I'm looking for recommendations of less well known games. I tend to avoid games like Dynasty Warriors because the combat feels very light.

Anyone got any experience with Dark Devotion? It's the daily deal and I usually enjoy these games; hell, I even like Salt and Sanctuary.

it has an unusual format and it's worth playing for a different experience if nothing else. the no-backtracking-ever world design with a lot of different paths to take is interesting but makes seeing 100% of each area more annoying than it should be--if you do particularly well on a run, you'll end up far past a great deal of the game and have to start your next run before an area you passed by if you want to see more. I feel like the ideal experience would involve dying more than I did.

execution has a lot of flaws though. some hitboxes are noticeably off which is hard to forgive when the game's art is already very low-res, the % chance to miss has absolutely no place in a game like this, some attacks ignore shields with no warning where the only way to know is to try it and eat poo poo if they do, and many of the slower two handed weapons are borderline unusable against many enemies because the tuning between player vs. enemy attack speeds is off. a lot of slower weapons are only good if you abuse their range to hit enemies as they approach before they can attack at all->roll away and repeat, but a lot of enemies have no answer to this strategy, so it feels pretty cheesy. The blessing/curse system also has some questionable stuff, like getting a curse from taking an item which is supposed to make you immune to curses, or getting a really debilitating curse from not swapping out your armor for a long time during a run where 0 armor has dropped so far.

atmosphere and sound is very good which is the main selling point of the game imo--if anything, the sound being so crisp and clear contrasts with the low-res visuals and I would like to see a dark devotion sequel with the same sound quality but higher res graphics. Unfortunately the setting/background lore is really scattered and too much of a chore to try to decipher; if I had to guess, they were going for some kind of souls thing with the lore except the game's english translation is bad and doesn't even give you a loose idea of why you're there or what you're doing (souls at least offers you this much) so I didn't feel engaged with this part of the game at all.

this reads a bit more negative than I wanted to come across as I did enjoy it for the most part, but it definitely feels like an experiment or prototype in some ways.

It's an extremely ok game clearly made with a fair bit of love for the source material, by devs who released the really not very good Rambo light gun game. The fact that it actually has at least one fantastic standout section that makes the generic terminators genuinely terrifying alone is quite a surprise. It's a fair few notches above the Terminator Salvation game, which I thought was an okay co-op romp at least.

Mostly the latter. You're creating biomes and unlocking things. It's very much a podcast game with the real challenge being in figuring out how to unlock new things to place. You might need to create a specific biome with specific plants or might have to breed plants for desired traits such as size or color.

Stuff like that. Perfect for podcasts.

Victor Vran is a Diablo-like game that you may want to check out. Very similar in theme to Van Helsing, but with simpler RPG elements and an action game style control scheme rather than the follow-the-mouse style that most Diablo-likes have. It's not very deep, but I enjoyed playing through it once.

More like Trials if you want to beat all the challenges/unlocks, and progression is relatively challenging. It's sorta like if you mixed Trials with exploration, because a lot of the challenge is finding faster ways/shortcuts down the mountain (and there are many) and then executing it, which will be hard. Audio is like the total opposite of Trials, at least what I played, as it's all just natural soundscapes of birds, rivers, wind, etc. Very serene.

It's on Game Pass, too.

Hades is more action and less RPG, but it's fantastic action and it's pretty over-the-top and flashy. It has a rogue-light progression system and the weapons you unlock feel meaty and very different. If you've played Bastion, Hades is the natural progression of Bastion's combat system cranked to 11.

yeah, it is surprisingly OK to play if you like shooting Terminators (and not much else). For a low budget shooter it does a lot of things right you wouldn't expect (or even be in a game like that). I don't think it's worth 40€ though, maybe 15-20.

Chaos is explicitly only related to how many people die over the course of a given mission. It's not necessarily how many you personally kill. Like, if you knock someone out and they get eaten by rats, it counts as if you had personally shanked them in the kidneys. It pays to pick up your KO'd meatheads and put them in high places, just to be sure.

The margin for low to mid-chaos is really high, though. I think the figures are such that you can kill 20% of the actors in a given level and still be at low chaos. That number would include even neutral NPCs, by the way, so it's factually even higher than it sounds. Don't worry about offing the occasional guard or anything. You can go really loud once or twice per level and still get away with it no problem.

Killing bloodflies is A-ok, by the way. Only humans matter.

I know the feeling. One good piece of advice to keep in mind is that verticality really is king in this game. Enemies, much like real people, don't really look up, but can see you at sometimes surprisingly long distances if you are level with them. Try to come in from above or below whenever you can. Exploit the vision abilities, if you have them. They help avoid unpleasant surprises.

Trip report on Stone Shard.

Game has real good feeling systems and powerful feeling moves and progression, which is real nice, the balance feels way overtuned atm though so hopefully they do something about it, cause it just seems masochistic right now. On the technical side it hitches a little and has an issue where it stop registering keyboard commands until you click on the screen sometimes. But those are the only real issues I've run into on the technical side, so I'm optimistic about them having a stable and fluid game by the end of EA.

Got fairly standard eurojank fantasy writing (I think it's Russian?) so your tolerance for that is gonna define how you feel about it.

It's firmly in the wait category for me, but keep an eye on it if you like top down rpgs, it seems like it has a lot of promise.

I think you just need the app to start the download for a game, after that it's all handled through the Microsoft Store app. You don't to run the Xbox app to start the games, relying on desktop shortcuts or the start menu works.

Apparently next week you'll also get access to the second DLC for Metro Exodus as it launches. Kind of a "screw you" to the people who actually bought the season pass for that game, but I'm definitely not complaining. I'm game for the adventures of Steve Blum in Vladivostok.

Yeah, I've used it before. I just find it super clunky and prone to errors. About half the games I tried to play at first would just flat refuse to download without loving around in the system settings and restarting a few times. It's terrible.
