For some reason I thought they came out at the same time as the Heisei Godzillas but it looks like they came out between the Heisei and Millenium series.

Yep. One part of the confusion is that Mothra Leo's mom uses the Heisei Mothra prop, though somehow she looks prettier, go figure. So it's very easily to mentally, visually confuse the two.

But the scale is completely different- Leo is, I believe, the smallest Adult Mothra we've ever had and all of the monsters are notably smaller as a result. Continuity wise it also doesn't jive with the Heisei era at all, nor anything we see in the Millennium era.

Yeah, I loved it. Mothra as an amoral, anti-capitalist, anti-American indigenous goddess rules. I think it would be one that I would recommend to people who aren't already into kaiju movies.

One of the key things about the movie, too, is that she wins. Her movie is the first time that the kaiju is the unequivocal victor who doesn't die.

It's also such a good set up for Godzilla VS Mothra in 1964. Godzilla has returned, what's the only thing we could do to stop him? Appeal to God(Mothra)

You guys might know this, but why wasn't everyone in Mothra's tribe small? It's set up that the island had been surveyed before but nobody found evidence of habitation. And most of the shots of the Infant Island natives are a little weird, like they're not on the same set as the other actors. And it's never questioned why the Fairies are small but everybody else on the island is normal size.

So the sense I got was that the script was written with the Infant Island natives all being small. But then late in production for some reason they switched it to just the Fairies are small but the rest are normal.

Am I right? Is there any behind the scenes stuff about that?

So as far as I can tell, that wasn't in the plans exactly, though you're not too far off. In the original novel, Mothra had several fairies that worshiped her- in the movie this was changed to only two, to make them more special and add a sense of wonderment to them. This was probably done to make things a bit easier for the production crew as well, since they had to be captured. It also helped that they had actual twin pop idols for the role to begin with, known as the Peanuts amusingly enough.

huh. That leaves me wondering why they made such a big deal about the island having already been surveyed and found to be uninhabited, but then never explained how the normal sized tribe with their big Mothra temple was missed. I guess it was to add mystery and magic to the whole deal, but it really felt to me like a set up that just never got paid off.

I thought the mystery was pretty straightforward in that the not-Americans probably didn't survey, half assed it, or found the natives and didn't particularly care. Nelson had the map that seemed like it was leading him to something/the fairies, so he clearly know more than he was saying.

I watched the '98 Godzilla last night for the first time since I was a kid with the intent of approaching it with an open mind and judging it by its merits as a standalone film, regardless of its place in the overall Godzilla franchise.

Bad idea.

That is not a movie that has aged well.

Though the effects are still good on Zilla, due to mixing in copious amounts of practical effects and all of the building destruction being practical, anything with CGI hasn't aged gracefully and the baby raptors are just the dumbest thing. But it's more than that.

Even divorced from the franchise, it's just not a good movie. It's got this entire tone about it that's extremely 90s in some of the worst ways, and the entire film feels like an elaborate joke. It's not even cheesy, it just feels like a Simpsons episode that is trying to take itself seriously.

Mind part of that comes from how many drat characters are Simpson actors

The movie is also incredibly boring. I went to the Rifftrax Live version a few years ago and even the MST3k guys couldn’t make it watchable. It’s a total snooze, which is just inexcusable for a giant monster movie.

Just watch Godzilla the Series if you want Zilla action. 90s science fiction films got a lot of surprisingly good animated TV shows for some reason.
Godzilla, MIB and Roughnecks are all solid cartoons.

I watched Rebirth of Mothra. It's good!

First and foremost, it is very much a kids movie. Strong moral about not fighting with your little sister, and a scene that's basically just "they're on a plane, isn't that exciting!"

But the tiny monster dog fight in the house owned! If the movie had stayed on that scale, tiny kaijus causing domestic destruction, I would've been completely happy. But then the giant monster stuff was good too. They had their work cut out for them making a fight between a giant moth and a dragon so big it couldn't really move exciting, but IMO they made it work. Making all three Desighidorah heads flamethrowers and having constant explosions was probably the key.

So yeah, Rebirth of Mothra, solid kids movie, good giant monster movie. Would recommend.

Godzilla Monopoly should be regular Monopoly but every turn you have to roll dice to see if Godzilla destroys whatever location you've landed on.
