Too bad about the headliners, but I'd love to see a bunch of those others. I'm familiar with Stoney Larue, Randy Rogers, Cody Canada, Margo Price, and Shooter Jennings (sort of). Who else in that lineup is worth checking out, and are they mostly red dirt?

edit: a shameful snipe.
Here, I really liked Lost Immigrants' album Judgement Day back when it came out and just discovered they released another one last year.

What’s your beef with Willie? He’s a loving legend.

Edit: BlackBerry Smoke is sort of Southern Rockish. I saw them open for TTB once. They’re pretty good.

Eh, I got no true beef with Willie. I've heard from a handful of people who have seen him live over the last few years that his live performances are pretty poor lately. Often enough I've opted not to pay for tickets to his shows. He seems like he'd still be a rad dude to just sit and chop it up with, or see a very intimate show with just him and a guitar.

gently caress Hank Jr though.

I don't hate this but maybe I didn't pick the best first track to listen to. It's a thin hair away from Saturday night tailgate beercan big truck girl come on over dirt road river bank Saturday redneck country song. The guitarist(s) definitely studied at the school of Rossington/Collins.

Blackberry Smoke has a lot of 1970s hard rock and southern rock influence. I saw them live a couple years ago and enjoyed it quite a bit. But that kind of music is my thing in general, so there ya go.

Last year's Hinterland was like the organizers had peeked inside my brain in order to come up with the lineup, so I suppose it's natural there will be a year where I'm not as hyped. Still looks like a good show though.

It's pretty cool for Tyler Childers. When he played there two years ago, he was one of the first performers of the day. Now he's headlining!

Someone in this thread had that exact reaction last year when Kacey Musgraves was runner-up headliner to Hozier, since she'd just won a Grammy. I'm pretty sure the headliner bookings are set before the Grammys :ssh:

OCMS has a longer legacy than Orville Peck and Yola, by a long time. Granted their last decade has not been an interesting one, and I’ll concede they’ve never had a main stage at a festival kind of sound or presence. It’s a shame they kind of fell apart with the various rehabs and whatever else, but they were good poo poo when they had it together. And unlike acts like Trampled By Turtles, Yonder Mountain, and others they share tours and fan bases with, they actually had some authenticity.

Not to mention they’ve won and been nominated for several Grammys too, if that’s your metric.

edit: And none of that is to take credit away from Yola and Orville Peck. But Peck has a single album out and hasn't even been around for 3 years, and Yola has only been around for a few more than that. Of Monsters and Men doesn't deserve a headline spot though, completely agree there. But it'll sell tickets.

It’s not, specifically. But in terms of festival relevance, it’s dumb. Yeah, they’re decent bands, but ffs they haven’t had a hit in a decade at least.

IDK anything about the festival world, but I've always sort of liked alt/outlaw/whatever country and :banjo: folk stuff because it wasn't about chasing hits  . I'd agree OCMS's best days are likely behind them, but I enjoyed their most recent album. I also like bluegrass and old-time music more than most people, so YMMV. I think they're in a hard place of trying to appeal to the mainstream country crowd that knows them for 'Wagon Wheel' and wants a more pop sound (and no doubt pay the bills and fills up venues) and the people like me that would like them to go back to their roots and dig out some more Frank Proffitt songs and not ham it up quite so much.

What do you mean by hit? Remedy was the number one folk album, number two independent album, and number four country album on Billboard in 2014. Volunteer was the number one bluegrass album in 2018. Actually, every studio album they’ve put out in the last decade has been number one on at least one Billboard chart. Do you mean a charting song? Yeah, Wagon Wheel is old, but it went platinum in the last decade.

OCMS were headliners for Hinterland's first year.

I am also :allears: to hear you expound upon your assertion that Trampled By Turtles aren't "authentic". I personally saw them claw their way up from the Duluth music scene, to the Minneapolis club scene, to where they are today, all because of their own sweat and blood. I didn’t say anything about them not working hard. Pretty much every band that has had any kind of success in this group of genres has to bust rear end. Especially those that make it to the top of the festival circuit. They rely on a very legitimately earned fan base because profitable radio play is not much of a thing in Americana. So yeah, Trampled By Turtles has earned their success. But they are not really authentic traditional bluegrass and don’t see much attention in the circles that are playing traditional bluegrass. Old Crow by contrast came up as a traditional old time band within the community of old time string musicians in Appalachia and earned a spot in the Grand Ol Opry partly because of that.
I haven’t lately, but I’ve spent years playing in bluegrass/folk jam sessions. I’ve played a good handful of both Trampled By Turtles and Old Crow songs in them. I’ve played their songs at small party gigs and open mic nights. The older guys and strictly traditional guys either don’t know Trampled By Turtles at all or have outright scoffed and refuse to play their stuff. I prefer to play with groups that are open to less authentic bluegrass, since I always try to get people to play Jerry Garcia stuff, a whole lot of which isn’t authentic to any genre, it just sounds good on strings.
poo poo, I like a whole lot of bands I wouldn’t consider authentic despite them billing themselves that way. Greensky Bluegrass even has it in their name, and I’ve never heard them play a single traditional bluegrass song.

edit: I guess authentic is a term more loaded with value connotations than I really mean to use. I should have just said traditional.
