Avenue 5 is definitely getting better as it goes. The first two episodes were pretty blah but three and four were a lot of fun.

I'm enjoying it a ton, and I love the premise.

I love the premise but the first few episodes were very underwhelming for me. That said I've kept watching and this last episode was by far the best and had some great lines. I know if the show figures itself out it has all the talent to be something fun.

I wish I hadn't watch Aniara for the first time so recently though. That's the bleak movie version of this show, and I keep being reminded of it.

Dubs v. Subs is the worst Supreme Court case because it completely ignores the quality of the acting in the dubs and the accuracy of the translation in the subs.

I’ve seen both used as reasons why Americans are a bunch of idiot philistines. And sure that’s true, but it doesn’t help.

I'm on episode two of McMillions and it feels like the whole story could have been told in a single one hour episode. I don't get how they are going to stretch this out for six episodes.

That's funny, I find it fascinating and wish the series went on longer than only 6 episodes...and I don't even like McDonalds.

OTOH also just binged Locke and Key and hoo boy it's bad. I kept watching because I usually like Carlton Cuse shows (Lost, Colony, Jack Ryan) but this was tepid with uninteresting characters.

Avenue 5 aka The Love Boat In Space is fun in the same manner as Veep - there are so many gags, even if one doesn't work they move on to the next joke so fast it doesn't matter, and sometimes when it works there will be a string of funny lines in succession and the laughs pile on each other.
And while some hate him, Josh Gad's character kind of reminds me of the loud, obnoxious boss from The IT Crowd.

See, as well-written and performed as Veep is I never found it particularly funny. The Thick of It has a much higher rate of jokes, a more frantic pace, and is consistently laugh-out-loud funny, but Veep always felt like a step down in comparison. I've read others saying that Avenue 5 is a similar step down from Veep. And that's just a bummer because I love me some Iannucci, especially his earlier more surreal stuff.

Iannucci doing Starship Titanic with Hugh Laurie should be an absolute home run for me, but the trailers really turned me off and even the most enthusiastic goons feel like they're making excuses for it. Hopefully there's a second season that irons out the wrinkles.

I dunno I feel like all the information so far has been pretty necessary, and I like hearing interviews from pretty much everybody involved

Then again I've watched the 15 hour Ken burns Vietnam thing twice lol

I just straight up love it.

It's less Spaceship Titanic and more Fyre Festival, but the methodical revelation of exactly how hosed they are, and in what ways, is a big part of the appeal.

Plus it's fun to play Who's The Saboteur.

I think a lot of the issue with Avenue 5 is that it's completely unlike the shows/movies for which Iannucci is known. For example, not a single person has been referred to as a sex toy of uncommon or dubious construction.

I 100% agree.

That being said, it's just on the edge of so bad it's good. While I'm not going to incorporate any of that aesthetic into my own life, I can somewhat appreciate its beige, frumpy tackiness from afar.

I was age 10-20 in the 1990s so it's the era I grew up in, I guess as a fish doesn't realize it's surrounded by water, I didn't realize I was surrounded by trash until I did an X-Files rewatch a few years ago and so many shoulder pads and Saturn cars and terrible giant cell phones and pagers and baggy clothes.

I think part of it is that 90's people felt entitled to the future but we weren't there tech-wise so you had all these try-hard future crap electronics and TV shows and stuff that just couldn't pull it off.

Hm. Not sold. I liked a lot of the first season, but mostly because it leaned into the detective aspect of the story. That looks like it's more about action and gun porn than anything noir-inspired. The first season got ridiculously anime like 3/4 in so I guess it shouldn't be surprising, but bummed that this looks more (generously) Ghost in the Shell than Blade Runner.

I’m at work so I haven’t gotten to watch the new trailer yet, but I’m not nearly as hyped for season 2 as I was for season 1. The more they leave the books behind the less I care, because the new material was by far the weakest part of season 1.

I don't care for Awkwafina's schtick.

Also she started to become popular at around the same time as Bojack did the Awkwafina abortion music video and I couldn't figure out what one had to do with the other.

Also also Bojack picked that name as a satirical shot at stupid Hollywood self branding but irl this was also happening at the same time. What was the show or movie where she played a quirky convenience store clerk? That was my first exposure to her and I was like "this sucks"

It still confuses me that Sextina Aquafina was never voiced by Awkwafina

Anyway I’d only ever seen her in small parts before The Farewell and obviously I knew that was a departure from her usual stuff but she was still very good in it

Her old music videos are super fun. It was awesome when she then started popping up in things, and she had a show on an online network I never heard anything of other than the commercial for their shows. I’m sure it’s gone now.

She’d be a good snl host.
